Location

<NYC> Lower East Side

Historically characterized by crime and immigrant families crammed into cramped tenement buildings, the Lower East Side is often identified with its working-class roots. Today, it plays host to many of New York's mutant poor, although even here they are still often forced into hiding.

Things in New York City are starting to return to normal in the slowest way possible. People are starting to return to their homes, if they have them, and trying to pick up the pieces of jobs, if possible, but many strange things still linger in the public eye. People still tote weapons, more readily accessible than concealed, and food is carried with weapons drawn, rather than casually and freely. Mutants who roam the street may be given a wide, wide berth, or they could be attacked by the general populace, zombie or not. It depends on the day or night and the risk it puts on the humans involved.

Rasa hasn't really tried to disguise hirself today, given that the weather is discouraging too many layers. Ze is covered from neck to ankle, furry, scaled hands and feet sticking out from the mottled, city colored clothes. A huge backpack rests heavily on hir shoulders, excess straps cinched tightly around hir waist. While ze might have covered hir face in the past, ze hasn't bothered today, hir almost draconic features reflecting back the street lights near Evolve's main entrance. Ze's a bit distracted, a sleek black axe in each hand, yellow gold eyes narrowed at the two zombies that seem to have followed hir back to hir destination. "{All right...}" ze grumbles in Russian, scowling heavily. "{End of the line, you undead flaking skin, peeling off of a great aunt's neck. Come now, let's end you.}"

The door to Evolve opens -- and closes again rather quickly on the tall redhead who's just emerged, in jeans and grubby sweatshirt, just starting to lower the phone she was holding in her hand. She tucks it back into a pocket, phone traded for a knife that was at her hip so fast it seems like one fluid motion. "{/More/ of them? I swear I just ended -- who am I kidding, there's always more of them.}" Her own words come in kind of annoyed Spanish, a nuyorican accent to them. She's already heading down the street -- not /entirely/ by way of the pavement, vaulting up over the railing to the steps, onto a trashcan, off the edge of a wall -- to land just behind the zombies swiftly and tug /one/ of the pair off-balance away from Rasa.

Pedro is dressed for the weather, with jeans and a winter jacket, though the jacket is unzipped, revealing a grey hoodie underneath. He clomps along in winter boots that are a few sizes too big, and wears a small backpack upon his back. The bat-mutant is keeping a wary eye out for trouble, avoiding normal people as best as possible. Pedro's destination seems to be the Evolve Cafe, and he slows as he sees two people squaring off against a couple of zombies. His ears perk up a little, recognizing Rasa, his face taking on a neutral tone, and he watches with interest as Natalie moves to engage one of the undead creatures. His Spanish, when it comes, does not bear an American accent. "{Careful, some of them can think. These two could be bait.}"

"{Yes, yes, Spanish. No one speaks Russian here. I forget where I am.}" Rasa continues to grumble in Russian, adding a little volume now that ze knows people are listening -- then switches to bad Spanish. "{Excuse me,}" ze nods to Natalie, catching her ricochet over to the zombies. Hir chin pulls back before hir attention locks on the zombie ze's been left with. Despite the weight on hir back, ze charges forward and a little to the right, skirting to one side around the being, delivering a head shot with a hir right axe, the left held in front of hir as a guard. Ze tugs the zombie and axe toward hir person, before lifting a foot and kicking the body off away and off hir blade. "{What? More? Where?}" Ze is now looking around carefully.

Natalie's brows crease in a deep frown as Pedro speaks, but her motions don't slow. One sharp twist pulls the zombie around to the ground; she bears down with the motion, lodging the knife into its eye and then tugging it out as she rises again. Her eyes cut around the street, one direction and then another. "{Bait? Were others following?}"

Pedro raises his eyebrows at Rasa's quick work of the zombie before her. "{Oh, uhm, I haven't seen any others near here. I've heard enough people talking about smart ones that I worry when I only see one or two. But that's just me.}" The mutant looks Natalie a moment, and shakes his head. "{No, just me being paranoid. I've been holed up for a while, you know?}"

"{Ah. No. They no bait. They walk after me for a long time.}" Rasa straightens up, hir head rolling on hir shoulders, looking back at Pedro and Natalie, hir eyes shifting to a darker shade of amber. "{Not smart.}" Ze inhales and crouches near the now dead zombies, wiping brain matter off of hir axe onto the body's shirt. "{So, is the city safe now? You come out of hole?}"

"{Kind of single-minded that way.}" Natalie wipes her blade down against the shirt of the zombie she has just felled, tucking it back into its sheath at her side. "{They say it's safe/r/.}" Her smile is a liiittle bit lopsided. "{Whatever that means.}"

Pedro grins at what Rasa says. "{Yes, safer to walk around, and there's actually food to buy. Uhm, I don't know if you remember me from Central Park. Are your two friends alright? The uhm shark dude? And the guy who can fire laser beams?}" He glances at Natalie and nods in agreement. "{Yes, safer, take with large grain of salt.}" He looks from Natalie to Rasa and back again. "{Name's Pedro. Nice to meet you.}" He gestures to the Evolve Cafe. "{I was going to look in at the Cafe there. Do you know if everyone's okay? I have some things to donate.}"

Rasa's eyes narrow even further on Pedro, hir head canting to one side. Ze mutters something in low and growly Russian before drawing hirself up to hir full height once more. "{I remember you. Friends are better, now.}" Ze tucks one axe under the straps of hir backpack and glances to the doors of Evolve. "{You know people inside?}" Hir other hand grips the axe handle tightly. "{Not much to buy. Not much food in city.}"

"{Everyone like -- who?}" Natalie hedges uncertainly. "{Did you want to know about --}" She waves a hand to Rasa when ze asks if Pedro knows people. "{Someone?}" She shrugs uncertainly, stretching her arms up over her head afterwards. "{Mostly not dead,}" she sums up. "{Mostly. Some people went home, if they had a home to go to.}"

"{No, you're right, there's not a whole lot. But more than there was just a few weeks ago. And I am glad they are better. No hard feelings, yes?}", Pedro says to Rasa. He rubs the back of his head momentarily. "{I don't think there's anyone I know inside the Cafe. But I know that everyone has lost things. Family members. Their homes. When I first got here, I had nothing. Winter was difficult. So I thought donating some hats and mittens would be a good idea. It's not much but it's all I got.}" The young mutant looks to Natalie a moment, "{I know people were taking shelter in there, so I was curious if everyone was alright.}"

"{Stop. Talking.}" Rasa replies, teeth gritted. "{You no talk. No talk that time.}" Hir eyes blaze a sick, egg yolk yellow, hir mouth shifts, like the teeth within are growing. Ze shakes hir head keeps hir arm very carefully at hir side. "{People Okay. Leave the stuff? I give to them, yes?}"

"{Hey what's --}" Natalie opens her mouth, closes it again, takes a half-step back away from the others and towards the door to the cafe. Her eyes have widened slightly, flicking between Rasa and Pedro with a small furrow of brow at this exchange. "Uh --" Her hands lift, palms-out kind of placatingly. "{That's really kind. I -- people will appreciate it. The ones who're left here, anyway -- I mean, nobody's really... got much.}" Her half-smile is a little self-conscious. "{Alright's a spectrum, I guess. Alive, not sick, got a roof. It's a start. And now winter gear! Better start. It's nice to have people who -- stick together.}"

Pedro raises an eyebrow at Rasa, and then narrows his eyes. "{Yeah, it wasn't all fun and games for me either.}" He shrugs out of his backpack, and rummages around inside it. A plastic shopping bag is pulled free, and he glances inside, smiling faintly to himself. He rolls it up a bit and shoves it under one arm, and then offers the backpack to Rasa. "{There's a dozen hats and pairs of gloves in there. And some tins of fruit. Mostly peaches because they're delicious. I was taking them home, but if you guys really have nothing in there... then you need this more than me.}" The bat looks to Natalie and nods. "{You guys need a bit of everything, yes? I will come back with more. Food this time. Maybe some sweaters. See what else I can rustle up.}" He turns to slowly head off down the street, opposite the direction he came in at. "{Take care.}"

Rasa pulls back hir axe and extends hir empty hand to take the backpack, hir jaw still set. Ze nods graciously in acceptance of what is inside, but doesn't speak again until Pedro turns away and leaves. Ze glances toward Natalie, hir eyes cooling to a less ugly color. "{I apologize. I injured - last time he and I speak. Hurt - long time. He never stop talking. No have words in Spanish to explain. Just... Apologies.}" Ze bows hir head and offers the bag to Natalie, one of the people staying at Evolve.

The frown creases Natalie's brows deeper. "{Thank you,}" she calls after Pedro, stretching up onto her toes as if this will make the gratitude heard better. She settles back down on her heels, taking the bag from Rasa with a slow exhalation. "{It's...}" She hesitates. "{Been a complicated time. For everyone.}" Her teeth press down against her lip, and she lifts the bag. "{... just makes it all the more important we're all here for each other. I'll -- get this in to people.}" With a small quick smile, she bobs her head and turns to head in.

Pedro pauses and glances over his shoulder, grinning. "{You're welcome! Stay safe, yes?}" He gives them both a wave before continuing on down.

Rasa in turn, follows after Natalie, cheeks a faint pink under the scales on hir face. "{Ah, um, I am heading in, too. Some business to do. Don't mind me...}" Ze ducks the other way once inside, distributing things ze brought in hir own backpack.
