Beau, Astrid

“I have no idea how relationships work, but I’m pretty sure bein’ awkward is part of it.“

Location

<XAV> Lake - Xs Grounds

Not too far from the lake’s edge sits Beauregard, his elbows resting on his knees as he stares out at the cold water. “Gonna miss this view.” the teen grumbles, hand dropping to tighten up the orange laces on his doc martens before pushing up onto his feet, “If these bastards’ll ever message me back about that damn listing anyway.” A hand slips into the pocket of his Xavier’s hoodie, pulling out a (comparatively) tiny phone to check the nonexistent notifications.

The weather seemed just about perfect for a walk immediately following the final class of the day. Astrid is dressed in her usual - black beanie, black hoodie, dark blue jeans and a new pair of Chuck Taylors. A backpack is slung over both shoulders with a skateboard strapped to it and a pair of black headphones covering both ears. The cord disappears into the left pocket of the hoodie.

She catches sight of Beau as she nears the lake edge. “Hey, didn’t you graduate or something?” She’s flashing a toothy grin while sarcasm drips from her low monotone voice. Headphones are pulled down to hang idly around her neck as a hand disappears into the pocket following the cord. What muffled music can be heard from the ear pieces quickly stops.

“Was hopin’ to put it off till I had my eyebrows back, but you can’t win every battle.” Beau turns to face Astrid, flashing her a grin in return. His eyebrows are halfway there, a touch of makeup filling them in the rest of the way. “How’ve ya been?”

“Shit… yeah, sorry about that.” She bites at the inside of her cheek, eyes briefly diverted towards the ground. Both of her arms curl up, gripping each strap of the backpacknear her shoulders. “Can’t remember if I ever formally apologized for that.” She looks back up at him. “At least they are growing back in?” She cracks another smile. “I’ve been alright. Could always be worse, right? Besides the eyebrows, what about you?”

Beau waves a hand dismissively, “Didn’t do it on purpose, and I didn’t get hurt too bad. We’re good.” He slips his phone back in his pocket and shrugs. “I’m doin’. Tryin’ to sort out a place to stay now, then I’ll figure out work. Tempted to just sell drugs honesty.” He sucks on his teeth and casts a glance back towards the school. “Tempted to go to college and put off making a decision too. Who knows.”

“Cool.” Astrid responds, pulling down on the backpack straps and causing the bag to rise up on her shoulders slightly. The selling drugs comment elicits a nervous laugh, though no comment. “Go to college. Push off the decision.” She states matter of factly. Any physical tension she had standing straight is quickly released as her shoulders slump down following a half-hearted shrug. “I don’t know… that’s what I’ll probably do when it’s time. Seems easier that way.”

“That was a joke, by the way. I don’t wanna deal with people like that.” Beau nods, rocking back on his heels. “Might be the best thing to do. I don’t know.” He reaches up to scratch at the back of his neck, “So. How’re things with you and Cassy?”

Astrid laughs, “Yeah, wouldn’t imagine that line of business having the most trustworthy associates.” She reaches up to push her glasses further up onto the bridge of her nose, and once they settle they’re a little lopsided. “I think it would, for what that is worth.” Her smile only grows with his last question. “Good. I think? I mean, I’m awkward as hell, but haven’t blown her up again… that counts for something, right?”

“For sure, that’s always positive.” Beau grins. “I have no idea how relationships work, but I’m pretty sure bein’ awkward is part of it. Emotional vulnerability is a sumbitch.” His hands creep back into the hoodie’s pocket. “Seems pretty cool though.”

“Well…” Astrid looks down, left toe digging idly into the ground. “I’m just winging it, which I am sure is how all relationships go. I’ll let you know if I figure something out though.” Again she laughs. “They sure are, aren’t they?” Her head nods as both hands move back up and grip the backpack straps. “But it is cool. Exciting even. Never been in a relationship before this. What about you?”

“Nah. I’m not so great at talking to people. It’s not that I haven’t been interested, I’m just too anxious to say anything, y’know?” Beau looks away, his face turning half a shade redder than it already was. “I’ll burn that bridge when I get to it.”

“That’s a solid plan.” Astrid says, nodding for further confirmation. “I’d offer to help, but I honestly feel like I’ve really lucked out. Zero skills over here.” She again releases the backpack straps, crooning her left thumb to point at herself. The gesture is followed by a brief pause as she chews down on her bottom lip. “It’ll happen when you least expect it.” Quick flash of a grin. “That’s how the old saying goes, right?”

“That’s what it seems like, yeah. It’d be pretty cool, but I’m not really stressing it either.” Beau shrugs, fiddling with her phone in his pocket. “Hopefully things work out between you two. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to go out with a magician.”

“Well, if there is anyone I could possibly date that would be good at a disappearing act.” Astrid laughs, maybe a little too much at her own joke. “But thanks. Me too.” Both arms are stretched out as a long yawn is only partly stifled. “Well, I should probably head back.” Right arm hooks downward to tap the bottom of her bag. “Got some good old homework to look forward to.”

“I’m not gonna miss the homework.” Beau pulls his hands free to wave, “Good luck will all that. I’ll catch y’all around at some point, probably.”
