How can we know the dancer from the dance?
Introduction

xxxxxPretty normal kid in a pretty abnormal world.

Description

xxxxxSlender and and willowy, Lyric stands an average 5'5" of lean limbs and few curves. Her warm brown skin is usually impeccably made up, her deep brown eyes, wide mouth, rounded nose, round face, generally framed with brightly colored and intricately wrapped headscarves. She carries herself tall, a confident energy to her bearing and movement.

History

xxxxxBorn the second of four children to a pair of Somali refugees living in Maryland, Lyric has had a largely uneventful life. Born deaf, this never became much of an impediment to her early life; with two Deaf parents and a Deaf older brother, her entire family and much of her surrounding community signed. At school -- a small Islamic school outside of DC -- she had an interpreter, and while she had to deal with a fair bit of teasing and a fair bit of difficulty connecting to other students who did not have the patience to deal with note-writing or interpreting, by and large her life was happy. Always involved in Too Many Things, she was active in sports, loved to dance, loved to play drums.

It was her elder brother's manifestation as a mutant that prompted the first major upheaval of her life. Though her family was quite supportive, his school was not; when Lyric was nine they moved north to New York City to seek an environment for him where more people would understand and be able to deal with his mutation. After a year of unsuccessfully trying to integrate into public school, Yasin came to the attention of Xavier's School, attending there for his final two years of high school and continuing on to study in the city at Columbia, where he is currently a junior.

Her mother, on the other hand, began teaching at Xavier's when Yasin was a student there, forming their ASL classes for the first time. Five years later, and her mother still teaches at Xavier's; her father now works in nearby Salem Center, where he owns a small aquarium supply store.

Though not a mutant herself, her mother teaching at the school means a steep discount for Lyric; she was one of Xavier's only two current human students before graduating last year.

Powers

xxxxxTotally amazing hair.

Skills

xxxxxNative ASL speaker; fluent in written English, Arabic, and Somali. Quite an excellent dancer; active in the school's performances and on their dance team. Also quite an excellent drummer, favoring small handdrums over Western-style drumkits, though she is decent on those, too. Excellent at sewing and designing clothes. Past these things, she's mostly a dabbler; curious and eager to try new things, she's enjoyed trying her hand at a huge range of the classes and clubs the school has to offer, though she excels at none.

Trivia
  • Has a small but steady income from her upstart fashion line which she sells mostly on Etsy.
    • She has a small but dedicated customer base among hijabi teenagers looking for excellent modest fashion, and among people with nonstandard body configurations looking for custom clothing that actually fits them.
  • Has a YouTube channel focusing on fashion tips/makeup tutorials/style guides. Keeps a blog about hijabi fashion.
  • Has crafted her social media adroitness into a modest but steady income from her quite popular YouTube channel and sponsored IG style posts.
    • Spends an disproportionate amount of time because of this deleting hate mail and death threats from her inbox due to being a) a Black Woman On The Internet and b) unapologetically Muslim. Has to ration how much social media-ing she does because of this.
  • It was not common knowledge around the school that Lyric is a human; clearly, nobody has ever seen her display any mutation, but there are plenty of students who don't show off their powers, and given that there have been vanishingly few human students in the entirety of the school's history, it would be an enormous leap of presumption to assume this means she doesn't have any.
  • Very fond of aquaculture; she keeps fish in her room, more for the sake of getting to aquascape the plants than for the sake of the fish.
  • Would really rather have attended a Deaf school than a mutant school, but her mom teaching at XS means this is what is convenient so them's the breaks.

Token Minority - One of the only human students at XS, Lyric is kind of a freak by virtue of not being a freak at all.
If My Hands Could Talk - Frequently seen during class-time in the company of her interpreter. Tends to be quiet, but has plenty to say.
Feel the Rhythm - Being Deaf does not stop her from loving music. Is also often found in the company of her drums and is never opposed to impromptu dance-party.
Faithful - -- Or at least attempting to be. Practicing Muslim and active in the Islamic community in the area.
