Shaking things up!
Introduction

xxxxxCalls herself a 'hacktivist', but not unironically.

Description

xxxxxSkye is biracial, East Asian and Caucasian, and the blend of her features can be difficult to place for those who are unfamiliar with people of mixed backgrounds. She's 5'6", fine-boned but not slight, though not what most people would call curvy, either. Her eyes are dark brown, her hair silky black and shoulder blade length.

Reputation

xxxxxAmong hackers and conspiracy theorists on certain corners of the internet, she's known as a pretty solid source of information and a reliable programmer. Among residents of the East Village, Lower East Side, and Flushing, as that weird tech girl who lives in a van. Among men of wealth and a particular inclination, as a freelance escort who works hard to keep her clients happy. Among Prometheans and those close to them, as a dedicated ally whose own mother's long stint in the labs and inability to adjust afterwards is what brought her to NYC.

History

xxxxxTransplanted from China as a small child with her parents, she spent some of her formative years around the Prometheus Project when it was yet new and largely consensual. Her father, a doctor, was one of the early, and her mother one of its first subjects, volunteering her powerful healing factor for study in hopes of helping to develop new medical interventions. With growing military involvement, Prometheus's methods grew more unscrupulous, which evidently suited Skye's father just fine and he began performing nonconsenual gene therapy on his (human!) daughter. When Skye's mother discovered this, she tried to expose the project's secrets to the media and was forcibly confined to the research facility. Her father told Skye that her mother had fallen ill and needed special care, a lie she never once believed. Though only a teenager at the time, Skye attempted to find out what had become of her mother, and after a series of misadventures she landed in the care of Child Protective Service. When she manifested powers two years later, she fled her foster home for fear she would also be sent to Prometheus, not realizing she was a runaway experiment that had succeeded beyond her father's wildest hopes.

xxxxxFor a time she intermittently lived on the streets, in group houses, and with a series of partners, exploitative and otherwise. From one of her less awful boyfriends she learned to code, to manage computers and networks, and information security -- how to maintain and how to circumvent. She gradually made a name for herself among anarchist hackers loosely affiliated through an online tech collective called Rising Tide, applying her skills to exposing the dirty deeds of governments and corporations. She never forgot her mother's plight, and searched endlessly for information on Prometheus while maintaining a level of digital paranoia that even some of her fellow hackers found excessive. She succeeded for the most part in dissociating herself from her legal identity and used several others -- fabricated or stolen -- in different situations. She supported herself primarily through escort work and digital crimes, and over the years painstakingly modified an old van she bought from an ex into a a highly advanced mobile digital surveillance center.

xxxxx After years of searching, she tracked down a group of mutant activists who regularly raided Prometheus facilities to liberate those imprisoned. When she arrived in New York to find them, she also found her long-lost mother, only recently rescued from a lab and profoundly traumatized by her long captivity and torture. She dedicated herself to caring for her mother, and in time others in the community of Prometheans who supported her. After befriending members of the raid team itself, she began gathering intelligence on Prometheus for them, then providing technological support on raids, until sheer desperation drove the team's leaders to accept her offer to go on a raid in person. The operation went disastrously and landed Skye and other members of the team in Prometheus custody where she discovered to her shock her powers were not the same as those of her fellows, that she was perhaps not even a mutant at all.

Give me a Lever and a Place to Park - Living out of a van in New York City, Skye moves around a lot, parking wherever she can get away with it. Sometimes this turns out really inconvenient for other people.
Tinfoil Helmet - Skye will happily talk about all the nefarious deeds she thinks various governments are up to. Depending on who you are, you might either think she's paranoid or woke (or both).
Digital Robin Hood - Why should rich people have all the bandwidth? Skye regularly spreads login information for secured wi-fi hotspots, sets up botnets to provide free cloud services to people in the area, and 'liberates' electronic equipment for the use of the needy.
Dutiful Daughter - She puts a lot of energy into helping her mother adjust to life outside of Prometheus, physically, emotionally, and financially. Because of this, she often has occasion to encounter other Prometheans who run in the same circles.
Stolen Fire - For much of her life, Skye believed -- for good reason -- that she was a mutant. She has recently learned that she does not in fact have an X-gene, and that her powers were the result of gene therapy performed on her without her knowledge as a teen. Having discovered her, Prometheus is probably very keen on recovering their long-lost experiment.
