Learning to take up space
Introduction

xxxxxTed Altman (or "Teddy" as his high-school buddies call him, but he's been trying to switch to "Ted" cuz it sounds more grown-up) is an NYU undergrad (Business major), athlete, and cheerful geek. He is also a mutant who can shift into a superstrong giant form, easily mistaken for a smaller version of the Hulk, which is kinda freaking him out lately.

Description

xxxxxTed is a shapeshifter, but for now he only has two forms he can switch between: (human) Looks like a quarterback, which he was in high school: tall (6'2"), broad-shouldered, barrel-chested, muscular, blond, clean-shaven, blue-eyed, good teeth, perfect skin, kind of generic features, attractive if you like that sort of thing. Nice smile. Always looks like he just got a haircut that's a little too short but will grow out. Several piercings in both ears, usually wears studs in them. (green giant) Exact appearance varies a bit but is massive... 7-8 feet tall, weighs 5-600 pounds. Mostly human proportions, though on the overzealous weightlifter side of the scale. Green skin. Blond hair, blue eyes, piercings, just like in human form.

His size makes him imposing in both forms, but his manner is nonthreatening, almost apologetic... like he's trying to take up less space than he does... unless he's doing something that gets him out of his head, like athletics or the like.

Reputation

xxxxxYou might know Ted as an NYU Business undergrad (class of '23) who volunteers at the LGBT Student Center and is a rising star of the football and wrestling teams. You might also have heard of a green monster that attacked a car near Washington Square Park in late May 2019.

History

xxxxxTeddy grew up living with his mom and grandparents. He doesn't know his dad and they never talked about him. He was not a popular kid, spending a lot of time alone with books, computer games, movies. He fantasized about being one of the popular kids: athletic, handsome, charismatic, respected.

When he was 14 he grew five inches and gained a lot of muscle in a matter of weeks. His skin actually _cleared up_, his teeth straightened, his hair lightened several shades; he became noticeably more attractive. (This was an initial manifestation of his shapeshifting ability though he doesn't know it.) He joined the football team and was generally popular... while also reading comic books and playing D&D with the social outcasts, as he never forgot that he used to be one of them.

In September 2018 he started as a freshman at NYU, majoring in Business and Political Economy.

Near the end of his freshman year he was hit by an out-of-control car; instinctively his powers manifested and he mutated into a huge green muscle-bound giant. Everyone freaked out, including him; he ran away, several students were injured in the rush to get away from him, and the police were called in. Some local mutants helped him out afterwards. Later he got caught up in a fight with Purifiers and spent a night in police custody.

Powers

xxxxxTeddy is a shapeshifter, but for now he is limited to two forms: human and jolly green giant.

In human form he is an exceptional but entirely baseline human.

In his green form he possesses immense strength, stamina, and durability... he can lift a ton or so, batter down a brick wall with his fists, shrug off bullets, knives, fire, and most toxins. Exceptionally powerful attacks can still hurt him, though, and he has no unusual defenses against sonic or psionic attacks. He can exert himself at full tilt for about half an hour, or at half that intensity for several hours.

He can also heal injuries, in both forms, by instinctively shifting to an uninjured form.

At the moment he has no control over his shifting... he goes green when frightened or angry, and returns to human when sufficiently relaxed. Shifting (including self-healing) requires significant energy; having done it once, he can't do it again without resting for at least half an hour.

Skills

xxxxxExcellent all-around athlete; could make a professional career of it if he applied himself. He was a Boy Scout (Eagle Scout) and has some wilderness survival and related skills due to that, can do first aid, that sort of thing. He speaks creditable high-school German and is reasonably good at library/Internet research.

Trivia
  • Ted instinctively uses his power to maintain his appearance, so he doesn't have to shave or cut his hair or trim his fingernails, and he heals cuts, bruises, etc. ridiculously fast. He's never noticed that this is unusual... it's been like that since he was 14.
  • Ted came out to his family when he was 17, and is generally out at college. It's not a big deal. He hasn't dated anyone yet.
  • Ted makes pocket change helping other students work on bibliographies for class papers, and similar library/Internet research tasks.
  • Ted has no poker face whatsoever.
  • Accidentally hospitalized a driver (Douglas Nierbocker, New Jersey resident, currently in unstable condition at the Lenox Health Medical Center) when he discovered his powers. Thinks he killed him; is kinda traumatized by that.
