Introduction

xxxxxShe's been hovering around Xavier's for a few months, but so far Anna's only just started to seem like anything but a quiet, uptight international student. (She's not so tense on a daily basis that her shoulders are inside her ears anymore -- it's a start.)

History

xxxxxThe second child (of, eventually, nine) of a wealthy couple living in the small neighborhood of Chatham in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Anna was born into the strange dichotomy of living in a port city with old-style Acadian culture as its mainstay -- and having parents who worked in the import/export business and therefore were more wealthy than most of the neighborhood. While Anna and her siblings were raised with privilege, they were also raised in a quiet way, and in the ways of the little-known culture they had been born to. The Arceneaux parents pushed for perfection in their brood, as much as possible, and were pleased to find when they first put a violin in Anna's hand at the age of four that she had great talent for the instrument.

And so began her years as a musical prodigy. While her older brother and younger siblings were still given attention, Anna felt the full weight of her parents' expectations on her from a very early age, as she fiddled in public, for festivals, auditioned for orchestras starting at ten, and was even recorded a few times. She developed something of a reputation around the area for being a fine musician, and yet Anna didn't like the spotlight. She kept to herself, and while she was always happy to perform -- for as much as her initial training was parental pushing, Anna loved her instrument -- she didn't want to be photographed or much spoken to. And that was that, for a long time; the Arceneaux family attracted about as much attention as they gave out, and the people who knew them best were the people of Chatham, a close-knit neighborhood.

That was all well and good until Anna was twelve, and started manifesting her mutation. No one else in the family was a mutant, or, to their knowledge, had ever been one. And Chatham had strong anti-mutant sentiments, being a religious town that couldn't figure out where to /put/ mutants in how they did things. So the family kept Anna's growing ability to manipulate water a secret as long as they possibly could.

It came out in June of Anna's fifteenth year, mere months before her sixteenth birthday. A fight in a pub resulted in stronger emotions than Anna could handle, and she created a whirlpool out of the dishwater that went flying through the air and knocking over her opponent. This was something noticeable that no one could explain away -- and so the alternative was sending Anna away, instead.

Through business connections the family found Xavier's School at last, shortly after Anna turned sixteen, and she left for New York in September, arriving in time for the 2013 fall term to start.

Powers

xxxxxAnna is able to manipulate and influence water; she may in future be able to create water from nothing or from her own bloodstream, but she is still largely untrained and uncertain of her own ability.

She will, someday, be able to make water take whatever (small) shape she desires (a bathtub: yes, an olympic size pool: no, the ocean: definitely not), though as of now her skill with shaping is limited to floating orbs and angry flying whirlpools. Anna can also make water flow in whichever direction she wishes it to, a sort of telekinesis-like ability that only applies to water, as well as dissect the water out of something that primarily contains it -- like being able to reverse-filter coffee so that the water is in one place and the coffee grounds are in another. Her primary use of this ability at home was cupping river water in her hands and purifying it to drink, so that is something she has a good handle on.

As a manipulator of water, Anna is highly susceptible to what one might consider water's opposites. Hot, dry weather makes her sick and exhausted quickly and she stays inside during dryer times. She has an inborn fear of fire that manifested around the same time as her mutation, and shies away from things like Bunsen burners, incinerators and ... gas stoves, the last part of which makes future adult life possibly difficult. She also can't swim in chlorinated pools, as her mutation tries to 'defend' her and strip the chlorine from the water. On top of this she and her mutation are natural conductors of electricity, which can be useful when it comes to defending herself -- being able to electrify one of her floating water-orbs, for instance -- but also leaves her more prone to being accidentally shocked by things she touches.

Skills

xxxxxShe plays the violin with incredible talent, sightreads with no difficulty, and has perfect pitch. Her instrument is like an extension of herself, and she would be an even more successful musician than she already is if she did not have to disappear instead. She has performed with multiple orchestras from a young age and has been receiving regular lessons for the past twelve years -- at this point she is at a skill level where she could teach, instead.

In addition to that, due to her upbringing in New Brunswick which is fully bilingual by constitution Anna speaks both English and Canadian French fluently.
