Introduction xxxxxRen is a private individual with Recently discovered mutant abilities, and even more recently discovered Alien plant constantly trying to engage in non-reciprocated communication. Eternally tired, and kinda "Done" with the whole "being a mutant" thing. He's willing to lend a hand (with complaints) if the situation is interesting enough. Description xxxxxRen is on the paler side due to his sun avoidance. He’s tall, and has a built upper body that isn’t super noticeable since he tends to cover up a lot. He has dark eyes and dark hair. He tends to wear a fabric mask to cover the scarring and damage on the lower half of his face, and he has a slight speech impediment that causes him to have some trouble speaking clearly/articulating from the damage around his mouth if he speaks too quickly. He has some other scarring across his body from the accident as well. He’s missing his left leg (above the knee), and left pointer finger. He alternates between a wheelchair, crutches, or crutches/a cane with his new prosthetic leg he’s getting the hang of. Ren has an Alien Plant fused to his back, with some purple flowers along it. It's similar in look to a Clematis Plant. It’s not super visible if he wears a jacket, but you might be able to see the bumps of it under his shirt. It runs along his spine, and the vines branch across his entire back and merge into his skin, the more sun he gets, the larger the plant will grow. During the Alien Invasion, any life threatening injuries he sustained has vines that automatically "filled in the cracks" when he was bleeding out and have permanently fused there. Some of these points are spots along his chest, his hand, and by his shoulder. He occasionally has flowers sticking out of his skin, but he’s usually pretty quick about plucking these. This can also be specific to their faction (maybe they're class clown at their school!) or specific to a niche field (maybe you'd have heard of them if you know a lot about particle physics or cross country skiing, but not otherwise!) History xxxxx The TLDR version: Works as an engineer for helping Develop Sentinels. Had a bad accident, lost his leg, index finger, and got some scarring, Activated his Plant X-gene. Finally recovered and got back to work. Aliens Invaded. This guy can't catch a break. Symbiotically infused with an Alien Plant, who he's actively pretending doesn't exist. click EXPAND to see FULL BACKSTORY: Ren Oyama was born and raised in Maine to Japanese immigrant parents. His parents worked long hours, which inspired and pushed Ren to work as hard as he could. His father worked as a florist and ran a flower shop, which Ren would help out at on the side, and his mother worked as a Botanist. Being in Maine and his parents' professions, Ren was constantly surrounded by nature and flowers, but would spend most of his free time online and learning about computers, robotics, and all sorts of up and coming technological advancements. He earned himself degrees in Computer Science and Electrical engineering, with a Masters degree in Mechanical engineering. He published some papers as well as earned himself a few patents on soft robotic and human integrations. He worked a few jobs, but found himself at a high paying, top secret program, working on the new age of Sentinel robots in New York. He helped with developing its recognition software as well as increasing its mobility capabilities. It crossed his mind that maybe it wasn’t the most *moral* job, but it paid well, it was just a job. It’s not like him or his family would ever be affected (you fool, you absolute buffoon). One day while on his way to work, he was caught in a head on car collision that nearly killed him. In the panic, and Ren nearly dead, his x-gene activated. He was rushed to the hospital, and managed to survive thanks to the doctors. His left leg needed to be amputated, above the knee, he gained scarring on the lower half of his face as well as on his body, and he lost his left index finger. He spent months in recovery, and was more recently able to return to work in an attempt to make a dent his large sum of medical bills. After months of fighting the insurance companies, he was finally approved for an above the knee prosthetic, which he’s been practicing with after the long process of being fit for one. He's already debating making his own adjustments to it...if it weren't so expensive. His realization that he was a mutant was a slow one, and at first he chalked it up to side effects of the pain medications he was on. But as he slowly was taken off those, he realized the constant annoying signals and *whining* from plants were there to stay. He began promptly discarding any "Get Well" Flowers he received, unable to deal with the needling noises of the dying plants. His return to work was, unfortunately, short lived, when Literal Aliens From Outer Space invaded New York! The Stark Tower in which he was working at the time, sustained heavy damage, and he was pretty ready to accept his fate as Bug Food when he realized the elevator would probably be out of order. As fate would have it, an alien plant, hitchhiked on one of The Brood aliens as it invaded the city. The alien, while swarming the Stark Tower, gets killed and the plant is left vulnerable in the crumbling tower. The Alien Plant “sees" Ren, see's some sort of mobile plant, and Ren senses The Plant. They can’t understand each other, BUT the one thing they both understand is that they both want to survive. Driven by the pure instinct to Survive, Ren reached out for the plant, not understanding why but knowing it was his only chance. In their moment of contact, Ren's mutation enhanced the The Alien's Plants Synergizing abilities, which allowed it to merge and fuse to Ren's spine. At the same time, the plant then boosted it's energy into ren, enhancing his own mutation, which in turn created a feedback loop that created their Permanent Symbiotic Relationship. Aliens bombarded the tower, but with the help of The Plant, acting entirely on autopilot to protect it's new home, wrapped Ren in protective vines shielding him from fires, explosions, and attacked any alien that got close. He was able to escape Stark Tower alive, The Plant aiding him with traversing the warzone the city had become. The plant helped fill in his injuries, acting as a living bandage, and kept him alive until he was escorted to safety. He avoided the doctors after, figuring he'd been through worse, and wanting to avoid drawing any attention to his new plant passenger. He might have recently accepted the fact that he was a mutant, but he wasn't exactly ready for anyone else to know. In terms of the relationship between him the new plant imbedded in his back, Ren is very aggressive in the opinion that there *isn’t* one. The plant sends him signals that he can’t hope and isn’t willing to decipher. In Ren’s opinion, it’s just easier to ignore that it even exists. The plant is just a dirty freeloader, even if it saved his life. Powers xxxxx click EXPAND to see POWERS: General idea: Ren can connect with plants. He can “communicate” with them, help them grow faster, among other things. His body has also genetically merged with an Alien Plant on a cellular level. Ren’s mutation without the Symbiotic Plant: Allows him to Communicate and sense plants, and can make them to grow faster/better. (For example, a plant that might take a few weeks to finish growing he could help them grow in a day or two). He can give them a little of his energy to help a dying plant, or give it a little “boost” to enhance it’s own natural capabilities (help it resist rot, maybe help make the stem a little thicker, make it able to last a little longer without watering, etc.). Any boosts he gives them will last about a week without his interference, and he can always top it off after a week. He’s part plant on a cellular level, and sometimes grows little flowers on his skin as a fun cosmetic thing. Plant awareness/communication: Ren can pick up on plants in a given area, as well as signals they might put out. (Maybe a radius of 30 feet?) He’s currently not great at *understanding* those signals, but has started to reluctantly pick up on basic things like Need more water/less water. More light/less light, etc. To Ren, some plants might have a “personality”, but that might just be his human tendencies wanting to humanize things. With the Symbiotic Plant: With the Symbiotic plant, Ren can make plants grow EXTREMELY fast: It can go from a seed to a full plant in a few seconds. They won't grow much larger than they would normally. The Plant Info: The Sylvanux Florum, which we’ll refer to as the Clematis plant due to its resemblance, is an invasive plant that spreads across the cosmos by hitchhiking on people, animals, ships, etc. When entering a new ecosystem, it synergizes with the surrounding plant life, and outputs a significant amount of nutrients through a reserved energy storage, to create a micro-oasis around itself, which attracts life forms to the area so it can hitch a ride and spread further. The plant is extremely aggressive, adaptive, and has adapted some defensive capabilities to survive harsh traveling conditions. It can used its stored energy to rapidly grow thick vines to secure itself to its traveler, or grow tiny thorns if it’s attempted to be pried off or eaten. Its ability to synergize with it’s ecosystem has been studied across various alien planets, and has been attempted to be applied to other organic life forms as a way to fight certain diseases, but there have been no widely spread documented successes due to the plants apparent rejection of most attempted synergies. Ren’s “Dirty Freeloader”: Ren is currently genetically fused with a Clematis plant, which is a vine plant. Being fused with Ren, the Clematis plant has mutated to be a little more than just a plant. Ren and the Clematis can communicate through signals that he’ll *eventually* be able to understand. Due to the current language barrier, at the moment, the Clematis acts on autopilot, wrapping Ren in protective vines like an armor or attacking with super enlarged vines if threatened. The vines can be used to entangle or restrain people. They can also grab things, crush things (with enough vines), or even help Ren climb up walls. The vines can wrap around his own arms, leg, etc to help provide enhanced strength. Eventually, Ren should be able to control the vines. These vines are still attached to Ren, and any damage done to the plant he can feel, and any damage done to Ren the Clematis can feel. They’re more so a short ranged thing than long range. The Clematis plant is curious, and occasionally slips out through his sleeves to investigate things. If there’s not any access to plants around, Ren would at least still be able to use his vines. When severely injured, the Clematis will work to help save his life by “filling in the cracks” and holding him together. This works great for any sort of injury that breaks skin, but would not be effective against things such as organ damage. If anything, it would be more of a bandaid to keep him alive until he can get access to medical personnel than actually healing it. Ren has pretty thoroughly fused with the Clematis plant to the point where if it were attempted to be extracted, it would kill Ren and the plant in the process. This all uses an energy bank both him and the plant now share that stores up nutrients and can be released all at once. Over time, Ren and the plant will become better at using plant abilities more efficiently while spending Less Energy. Mechanics: Ren's mutation makes it so he's turned into part plant on a cellular level, which makes him susceptible to fusing genetically with the Alien Plant. Ren fused with the plant, genetically, and physically. The plant organism provides Ren with enhanced abilities, etc. Ren gives the plant mobility, a wider range of sensory input, etc. They both share nutrients, both them working symbiotically to keep each other alive. Physical mutations: Ren has an Alien Plant fused to his back that bears resemblance to a Clematis Plant. It’s not super visible if he wears a jacket, but you might be able to see the bumps of it and its purple flowers under his shirt. If he were to actually go out in the sun, his skin would gain a green-ish color, first as just an undertone, then his skin would fully take on the green hue. Also, if in the sun enough, little flowers pop up across his skin, in his hair, etc. As of right now, he avoids the sun as much as possible. Sometimes, flowers will pop up on his skin in correlation to his feelings. General Drawbacks/Weaknesses/Recharging: If they were to burn through the entire energy bank of stored up nutrients, he and the plant might just sorta shut down for a few days/a week? So, no using abilities, no little vines that poke out of his sleeves, essentially just bare minimum power conservation mode from both of them. Eat, sleep, drag his ass to work and pretend to do work, go back home and crash. He's also extremely in tune to nature around him, which can be distracting to say the least. He can tell when a plant needs something, and it won't leave him alone unless he takes care of it. If he's injured or weakened, the Clematis plant will help pump extra energy into him, but if the Clematis plant is weakened or injured, his body will pump extra energy into it, which overall leaves him even more exhausted than usual. This guy is just so tired. He himself, is part plant, and once he starts embracing that he'll realize he feels a whole lot better if he treats himself like a plant. Water, sunlight, etc. Then maybe the Clematis plant won't suck so much energy out of him to survive. During the winter, he'll probably struggle. His powers will most likely be weakened, and his access to plants will be lower. RIP to this guy he literally lives in New York. Skills xxxxx Reluctantly knows and can easily identify a large variety of plants, along with potential uses/toxicity/etc. Knows exactly how to make a garden flourish. Skilled roboticist/engineer. He’s good at what he does, and passionate about it too. Great technical knowledge. Good with computers Great with his hands, can usually fix most mechanical issues. Bilingual (Japanese and English). Creative. Can come up with a lot of unique ideas High pain tolerance Has developed some pain management techniques for himself Quick learner. Picks up on things pretty quick. Some good basic survival skills. Spent a lot of time hiking growing up in the woods of Maine. Great at staying calm in the worst possible situations. (Or maybe he’s just too tired for this shit) Quick thinker. Fast reflexes. Strong upper body strength! Using a wheelchair, crutches, or a cane all day will do that. Good mental fortitude.
