"I wish I could hear her voice right now"

Location

Cabin in RiftAU

It had been a few days since Tomas and the other students where stolen away and left stranded in this new world. Tomas felt so lost, just as all of the kids did, he felt so alone even among familiar company. He had set up a few pillows and a blanket in a corner with. As he sat in his corner settling in for night everything started to hit him, the loneliness, the dread, all at once. As it all hit him he just slouched down into his corner and started crying, barley loud enough to be heard by others, his distress caused the lamp near him to flicker in and out almost in sync with his crys

The ceiling of the stranded mutant's new cabin home blurred into slate of sameness as Zeke stared up from his sleeping bag. He was praying again, silently this time, remembering Nanami's rebuke from the other day. One of the worst parts about being stranded in an alternate dimension with a bunch of kids he barely knew—and Zeke would have never suspected this on their first day stranded together—was the lack of privacy. There were far too many kids in this cabin. There was noise and movement at all hours of the day, as everyone had taken to various states of restless sleep and aimless wakefulness. More than once, Zeke had been tempted to use his powers just so that he could have a few moments of solitude. Sure he'd still be able to see and hear everyone around him, but at least for a few brief moments there'd be no one looking at him. Zeke took a deep breath, then prepared to hold it in—then he heard crying. Without sitting up, Zeke turned his head in the direction of the almost inaudible crying. At first, Zeke didn't say anything. This wasn't the first kid he'd seen crying since they were stranded. Most of the time it just seemed more polite to pretend like you didn't notice the crying. Then the lamp near the crying kid flickered. "Whoa there," Zeke kept his voice low. "Hey, uh, I know this whole thing is a damn mess and normally I'd leave ya to your feelins', but I reckon we don't want a power outage or anything so could you..." Zeke looked from the crying boy over to the lamp flickering near him. "I'm assumin' you're causin' the haunted house light show."

Tomas looked up a bit sniffling as the other student talked to him. He stopped crying for a moment and reached for the lamp and simply flipped the switch off. He let out a bit of a sigh and pulled out a notebook and pen he had found. " I hate this, I want to talk to my aunt. I miss her. And there is so much confusion here. I've never felt this before" he wrote out and showed Zeke the notepad with one more quick sniffle.

Zeke couldn't help but laugh at Tomas' simple—yet effective—solution to the flickering lamp. "You're a slick one, huh?" Zeke propped himself up on his elbow and quickly scanned the notepad. "You and me both, pal." Zeke's voice radiated sympathy and understanding. "I've never felt this either. Even after I was kicked out and on my own, I at least felt...grounded. Now I don't know which way's up and which way's down." A long sigh. "I miss my Mama, personally; I wish I could hear her voice right now. Zeke is silent for a moment, then; "Is your auntie a nice lady?"

Tomas nodded a bit and writes: "Yea she is nice, she took me in when I was younger." He hands the notebook to Zeke before pulling out a gold wedding ring from under his shirt, its on a necklace, and runs it thru his hands.

Zeke sits up before accepting the notebook from Tomas. "I bet y'all were happy." Zeke stares at the ring in Tomas' hands for a while before he continues speaking "My mama and I were really happy too. Whenever she'd have a weekend off we'd take day trips all over. God I miss those trips." Zeke looks out the window at the cold Maine wilderness. "We always talked about goin' campin' in a place like this." Zeke's voice catches and it's then that he realizes that his eyes are blurred with tears. "Christ," he places Tomas' notebook gently in front of him before wiping his tears on the sleeve of his black thermal shirt. "No dang privacy in this place." Then he mutters, mostly to himself; "Gotta get outta here soon."
