This is just one of the many abandoned warehouses in DUMBO, and like many of them it has recently changed hands. Unlike most of those, however, it does not have some corporate developer's sign out front promising a transformation into luxury condominiums or a boutique shopping center or the latest concept restaurant. Instead it's marked by a piece of weathered but wildly colorful plywood propped up on a stack of broken pallets, which reads "Chimaera Art Space!" above "chimaera.org" in smaller letters. The warehouse is moderately large and decorated with graffiti art in various styles--some of it recognizable as the work of renowned local street artists. A pair of monstrous scrap metal sculptures, perhaps still works in progress, flank the entrance. The building itself has undergone significant renovation recently, complete with wiring, plumbing, and a modular partitioning system. The grounds, too, have been cleaned up, ramshackle fences torn down and rusting detritus removed in favor of reclaimed (and brilliantly repainted) outdoor furniture ringing an impressively engineered firepit. Daiki is sitting on the old but comfortable couch, a tablet in his lap. He's sharply dressed as is his habit: a gray sharkskin suit whose tone-on-tone stripes have a faint blue sheen in just the right light while virtually invisible from other angles, the vest underneath in wedgewood satin, a blue-black ombre skinny tie knotted impeccably to cinch a white poplin shirt. "We definitely want to showcase each of your distinctive styles as much as possible, but I'd like at least one..." He hesitates, considering his words, perhaps, dark eyes raising from the tablet behind his glasses. "...mainstream design, I suppose? Given the nature of the service, it might serve you and your potential clientele to represent a range of options." Marinov's legs are crossed, and they are leaned back against the couch next to Daiki, the arm further from him laid out across the back of it, with their tail curled below on the cushion below. They wear a cut-out satin dragon with an asymmetric design, and a pair of tight black pants. They're wearing their reading glasses, which is a rather rare sight, but at least they do not need to lean in too far towards the tablet. There are a few moments of hesitation at Daiki's comment, the end of their tail twitches quickly before smacking down against the cushion. "Mainstream design," they repeat, pronouncing the words almost as if they are unfamiliar. They lean their head back and sigh a bit dramatically, "I suppose not everyone is adventurous. Nor--" their head snaps up and they raise a finger, "--do I think they should have to be! I just have more pride in designs that I get to put more of a creative flair on. But..." They hold their hand out for the tablet, "There's a few things I can show you." Daiki's head bows just a touch. "I don't mean any disrespect to your originality, and I certainly would not ask you to compromise your artistic integrity." He swipes out an address and shows Marinov a page from Elias Covey's professional site entitled "Everyday Fashion". The designs represented there are more on the street fashion end of Covey's admittedly wide range. "Maybe 'mainstream' isn't necessarily the right word, but at least something that might look less intimidating to those who are not deeply immersed in fashion?" His warm, neutral smile widens just a touch as he scrolls past a suit that might well have been the prototype of the one he is now wearing. "From what I've heard you want B-Spoke to be accessible to people who might not have been able to easily get bespoke clothing from conventional tailors for one reason or another." Marinov scratches their chin lightly with a claw and they nod, just a little reluctantly. "I suppose it is like anything. Like, you don't develop a refined appreciation with tea without experimenting first." Their eyes are turned down towards the tablet. They glance from the image over towards Daiki, then back at the image. "Everyday fashion... accessibility is meant to be the main priority, yeah." Their eyes close tightly as they seem to think before they note, "I do have some more casual designs that might work for marketing. That I did for kids back at Xavier's. I at least have the sketches for sure, I think I have photos too? I'm proud of that work, you know, tailoring to taste." Daiki's smile skews a little crooked, here. "I am sure there are some who would immediately resonate with your designs. Sometimes these things just click!" He looks just a touch wistful, here. "Certainly the early inflences on my fashion sense were -- well, if not mainstream then at least somewhat conventional, and that suited my specific needs well. Sometimes I wish I could be more adventurous, honestly." His blush is very faint, but then he looks up, brightening. "Oh! If any of the Xavierites you've worked with would be open to it, we do have a budget for models. There's not a large market for visible mutant models, but any market has got to start somewhere." "'Have a budget', music to my ears," says Marinov with a wistful sigh, "I think I could convince someone to do a modeling gig. I'd love to see more visible mutant models, and it feels a little bit... self-absorbed? To have me model my own designs too much." They add, their hands splay and they look to the sky as if looking for some mercy from the divine, "Even though I'm gorgeous." They look back over to Daiki, ears perked up, "Yeah... that kinda sucks that you have to- What would you want to try if you could, uh, afford to stand out more? Not that you don't always look great regardless." Daiki nods. "I do think we should have you up on the site, to the extent that you're comfortable." He sets the tablet down. "But the more diversity in models, the better, I think." At the question he licks his lips. "I'd love to have more color in my wardrobe. More asymmetry. More..." He tilts his head slightly to one side, and he gestures at Marinov's top. "...adventure." "I think there's enough pictures of me online that I've gotten over any discomfort over that sorta thing," says Marinov. They look down at their top and then nod slowly, "You could pull the hell out of something like this. Maybe you could have like, a super secret wardrobe that only people who already know you real well could see? Like, have a dinner party or something and just go wild. Like, a fashion uncertainty adventure party! Your guests could try out looks, too, that they're unsure about! Hell yeah!" Daiki straightens, blinking -- it might look a bit startling, given his posture did not look slumped in the least before this. "Do you really think so?" the question is uncommonly diffident, by his standards. "Some of the people I'd want to invite would need specialized clothes, but I'm sure we could make that happen, hm?" Unwonted excitement brightens his expression, and a faint ripple of his power slips from his grasp, making him that much more compelling. Maybe some of them might even be willing to model." Marinov's excitement only increases with the ripple of Daiki's power. "Yeah! We could definitely make that happen, and also shmooze with some potential models." They laugh softly and clasp their hands together, "It'd be a great time! And any kinda help or anything you need to make it happen." They jut their thumb back into some of the ruff of fur on their upper chest. "I'm your helper person! You do folks so many solids, it should come back your way, yeah?" Daiki nods, the motion quick. "That would be wonderful. I'm sure other-Taylor will have some raised eyebrows for me, but -- well, I'm sure he'll indulge me." At the last question, he only blinks at first, his mouth opening and then shutting again. "I don't think --" Then he smiles again, shyly. "Thank you. A lot of people have done me solids, too. But I appreciate it all the same, I really do." |
