Spencer's cheek had peeled away to expose rows of teeth -- giving him a menacing, silent grin. His hand reached out to grab Peter's hand -- and to pull him down. Down, deeper, where more forgotten bodies laid in wait. All of them rising up to greet him -- rising up to seize him and pull him down.

In Absentia

Warning: Gruesome imagery.

Location

Peter sank beneath the waves, descending into the deep. The soft *hssss-shh* of the respirator -- the slow, lethargic *swoosh* of water -- and the thump-thump-thump his ears -- were the only sounds.

The high-powered flashlight struggled to slice a swathe of illumination through the darkness. Flecks and particles glittered in the endless blue. He swiveled it around, re-adjusting his heading, following the preset path that was plotted out in his mind. He glanced at the meter on his wrist; he had just a little more time. He kicked harder.

Time stretched. The light above dimmed, dwindled, then vanished. Up and down became indistinguishable; there was only the direction in which Peter was heading.

And then, cloaked in a corona of light, a shape appeared in the murky depths. An outline -- human. Hands, and feet, and a head. Still and waiting.

Peter descended in a rush of strokes. And as he reached out toward it, the head moved -- tilting upward.

Spencer's cheek had peeled away to expose rows of teeth -- giving him a menacing, silent grin. His hand reached out to grab Peter's hand -- and to pull him down. Down, deeper, where more forgotten bodies laid in wait. All of them rising up to greet him as one of their own -- rising up to seize him and pull him down.

Peter woke up screaming.
