The cabin is quiet. Despite being mid-day, no one is home. That is until Anette slips in the front door. With enhanced hearing and sight, she knows no one is around. Still, she can’t help but step quietly, half expecting, half fearing someone to catch her. Yellow eyes scan the main room, holding her jacket tight around her form as she quietly makes her way towards the bathroom.

Once in the bathroom, she closes the door behind her, making sure the door is locked. Now alone, she turns towards the mirror. She leans forward, propping herself against the sink, her face inches from her reflection. She stares with a wide-eyed, vacant expression and slow deep breaths, the kind that can only accompany deep, reflective thoughts.

A deep sigh and she breaks eye contact, lowering her head and closing her eyes. One more deep breath and she reaches inside her jacket, pulling out a Ziploc bag. One containing a fine, white powder. Working quickly and with a well-practiced flourish, she empties the contents onto the counter, just enough to form one thin line. With hardly any pause, she whips out a bill from her wallet, rolls it up and in one inhale, breathes it in.

With it over, she closes her eyes, breathing out slowly and a content smile on her face as the drug begins to take effect. That is until, she opens her eyes and catches her own reflection. Slowly, she reaches up, fingertips brushing against a few crumbs of white powder still lingering beneath her nostril. Brushing them away, she suddenly glances down to empty bag and rolled up bill, as if suddenly waking up. Quickly, she turns away from the items, the mirror, everything, tears burning her eyes. She reaches for the door but doesn’t quite make it that far, instead dropping to the ground and releasing the emotions within. Pulling her legs up to her chest, she folds her arms across her knees and buries her face. Unable to hold back, she doesn’t bother trying, sobbing loudly as everything she’s suppressed surfaces. Some things even a synthetic euphoria can’t suppress.
