"It’s called a guide to mental peace."

Location

<XAV> Workshop - Xs Grounds

A large barn-like building situated at the far end of the gardens from the mansion proper, this makerspace functions as a classroom for many of the more hands-on classes. An expanse of workshop space, it is subdivided into smaller segments for the different types of activities: Woodshop, Welding shop, Machine shop, Electronics, Bike shop, Screen Printing and Photography, Fabric Arts, and the Rapid Prototyping Lab with a trio of 3D printers.

The space comes complete with a large host of tools available for use, although many of the more dangerous require prior clearance from administration to use -- students with appropriate clearance to use them can gain access to locked equipment with their student IDs. From sanders to MIG/TIG welders to soldering stations to industrial sewing machines to its own darkroom, though, this space is well equipped for teaching students how to make.

It is dinnertime, and most of the school is over at the mansion; with the dining room bustling and crowded it leaves much of the grounds and outbuildings more peaceful and quiet than they often are. Most of the outbuildings -- this one, though, is filled with the sounds of drilling and then cursing, sometimes by turns and sometimes overlapping. Nanami, casual in a Xavier's sweatshirt and black jeans, chunky boots, safety glasses on her eyes, is alone over in the woodshop, and though she's the only one currently in the workshop she's making noise enough for several students, a steady stream of grumbling to herself as she attaches several Very Long wooden planks together into a rough frame. "... ai yah, pilau bus up bit, dis go stay all hamajang --" The target of her current ire seems to be the drill she is holding, moreso than the structure she is building.

Rhydian was wondering the grounds lookin for somewhere to read her book. As she passed one of the buildings on the outskirts of the grounds, she heard what sounded like power tools and cursing. Letting curiousity get the better of her, Rhydian moved to the entrance and peeked in. “hello?” she called despite being almost sure anyone inside wouldn’t be able to hear her. She moved in a little more and looked around cautiously. ‘What was this place?’ she thought to herself silently.

It's probable that Nanami doesn't initially hear Rhydian -- she doesn't look up, anyway, at the hello. It's only when the other girl comes further into the workshop that she puts down her drill, peering over from behind the large plastic glasses. Her brows lift curiously. "'chu looking for?"

“I was looking for a place to read and I heard yelling.” came the stuttery reply. This girl made her nervous for some reason. She didn’t like the feeling and was hoping to find a way to make it disappear. Unfortunately looking around once more didn’t result in finding anything to help her predicament.

"Ohhh, yeah, mansion stay pupule this time of day. Night. Whatevah." Nanami is nodding sympathetically at Rhydian's explanation -- then looks down at the drill in her hand with a small wince. "Not many people here but maybe not so good for reading," she's not exactly apologetic but her nose does crinkle up regretfully. "You try the conservatory? Attic? Stables, won't nobody bother you but the horses."

“Not the biggest fan of horses. Attic needs a good dusting and there’s always at least one kid up there. The conservatory is my go to place but I thought I’d change it up a little tonight.” she prattled in response.

Nanami raises her eyebrows again as Rhydian speaks, but she's nodding along slow. "Horses I no mind but Sugar's been real salty with Mr. Holland gone." She is scrutinizing her handiwork, now, rather than Rhydian. "This place here, gets smallkine loud. There's some mo better hiding place to be alone, but --" Here her smile flashes, quick and amused. "If I tell everyone them then they don't stay hidden, huh?" She baps the drill lightly against the side of her leg, finger restlessly pressing-releasing pressing-releasing at the trigger to set the bit growling and stopping in slow fits and starts. When she gestures towards Rhydian it is with the drill still in hand. "What'chu reading?"

“It’s called a guide to mental peace. I was hoping it would help with my particular set of abilities but I don’t think it is. What are you building?” she asked the girl who seemed to switch languages every once in awhile. This was interesting to Rhydian but made it slightly difficult for her to understand the other.

'A Guide to Mental Peace', Nanami mouths this silently to herself in echo together with a blink. "Yeah, that mebbe hard to find in a book. Or anywhere around here this school not a place for being sane. Your thing," there's a little waggle of her fingers in Rhydian's direction, "is it, uh, not peaceful?"

“I kind of noticed that.” she retorted with a chuckle. “no my thing, as you put it, isn’t peaceful in the slightest.” she continued. “out of curiosity, what’s your thing?” she posed after a moment of silence.

Nanami's mouth quirks. She doesn't press down on the trigger, this time, finger laid against the body of the drill, but it whirs again in her hand, faster than before. "Sometimes also not so peaceful," she answers lightly. "I guess if it was peaceful for any-us, nobody would be here, right?"

“You have a point there. Could you maybe put that drill down?” she asked hesitantly.

Nanami's eyes narrow sharply. "Boddah you?" She's more curt, here, the casual levity in her tone fleeing to leave it -- not hostile but eminently unimpressed. She does not put the drill down, but quite abruptly turns her attention away from Rhydian to return to her project, carefully whirring one more screw into the wood. "Girl, you in the workshop. You scared of tools this the wrong place to be. Go find your mental peace in the library, mebbe, yeah?"

“It doesn’t bother me so much as makes me a little on edge. I have a right to be afraid of them.” she commented though didn’t elaborate on the last part. “library’s too populated right now but if you keep it down, I’m sure I can find a place somewhere close that would work. Just wanted to make sure nobody was getting murdered is all.” she continued with a shrug.

Now Nanami's tone is hostile. "Piss off." She does not bother looking up.

“Whatever.” she grumbled before turning around and leaving.

The workshop is, at least, quieter than it was before -- no more cursing, Nanami's lips compressed tight together. Only the sound of the carefully whirring drill follows Rhydian out.
