In which the Francis sisters fail entirely to follow up on a plot hook.

Location

NYC

"Well, that's not suspicious at all."

Two girls stand on a sidewalk. One is small and in paint-stained jeans, curly blonde hair blowing about in the wind. The other is large and hooded and scarfed, and it's honestly hard to tell if she's a girl at all. Both are warming their hands, sipping from steaming, paper cups.

"I thought you'd be interested."

"Well, you know wwhat I aalways say: there's nnno such thing as a free hug." The larger girl's voice is harsher and more broken than usual, to the degree of an actual speech impediment. Apparently, she's a little out of practice. A few passerby give her a Look; most of them hurry on.

The smaller girl gives her a look as well. "You've never said that."

"Sure I haave. 'Free Hugs' ain't a new thing, and thhhere's always, always a cost." Her eyes narrow suspiciously up at the sign: first one, then the other, as if she had to think about it. Which she did. "But ssseriously. You say it wasn't ttthere a week ago?"

"Nope."

"And, like, the whole building? It's nnnot just a new place that moved in? 'Cause places do that, you know."

"Yes, Jill, I am aware of that. I don't remember that building."

"Did ttthey build it? Like, they do that too. There's no building and then a bunch of people come over and put it together--"

She trails off as her sister gives her another look, golden eyes nonplussed. "Jill, you've gotten crabby."

"I was always crabby."

"You didn't used to walk sideways and snap your pincers."

"I don't--" Jill turns with an expression that's half annoyed and half worried, but which softens when she spots her sister grinning and snickering. "...seriously, though, I dddon't do that, do I? Like, I could totally be ddoing that and nnot notice. That's a thing."

"You aren't walking sideways." Lily smiles. "But you *are* talking super weird."

"Yyyyeah, I nnoticed that. Dunno what I can do about it, and can't affffford like a speech therapist or something."

"Yeah."

There's a silence, broken by some foot-shuffling and beverage sipping.

"So." Lily asks. "We, like, established that this place is pretty sketchy. Wanna check it out?"

"Nah."

"Do you at least want one of these alleged 'free hugs?'"

"Lily, I smell like a sewer. The smell of sewage has permeated into my very being. Anyone who hugs me deserves to be compensated for their time."

"Welp." Lily taps her foot. "Wanna...um. Go get shawarma?"

"Sure."

And they do.
