Anette, Daken

"Please, we're both crazy. It's how we get along so well."

Location

<NYC> 202 {Anette} - Sunrise Apartments - Clinton

It's been almost two weeks since Anette's been outside her apartment. Her phone is blinking with 32 missed messages, the mail is piling up outside. Knocks on her door have gone unresponded. Maybe she's ok, maybe she's not. Right now though, she's laying on the couch buried under blankets with nothing but her face sticking out while she watches a Snuggie infomercial. And she doesn't look like she's moving anytime soon. Daken shows up outside the apartment and frowns a bit, moving to collect the various things left outside the door before knocking. "Anette, you in there?"

Anette is prepared to ignore the knocks at the doors but at the sound of Daken calling out, she suddenly looks up. She grabs a blanket and, wrapping it tightly around herself, she makes her way to the door and quickly unlocks it, throwing it open to glare angrily at Daken. "You are...the LAST person I want to see right now..."

"Just hit me in the face already so we can watch television and talk about how stupid the future is, and how it isn't really going to happen." Daken says, flashing the closest thing to a smile he can manage. His head has been shaved and he's wearing a sleeveless rising sun shirt and a pair of cargo shorts. "No need to mope around over something that hasn't actually happened."

"I'd punch you but I'm worried about gouging your eyes out..." Anette growls, grabbing his shirt and pulling him inside. Once the door is closed, she reluctantly lets the blanket loose and reveals what she had been hiding: her hands have evolved into talons, much like the ones belonging to her future counterpart. "How sure are you of the future not happening again?"

"That doesn't count, it's in your genes, we can't change that." Daken counters. "And you can gouge /one/ eye out. Once. That's it."

"Well, excuse me for not being thrilled over the prospect of dying. Especially over...you know. I told you love was a bad idea! Love and family and...it's weakness. It's not just that. Coupled with...this," she raises her talons, "I've just had a really lousy week. The wings were hard enough to hide. How am I supposed to hide these?" She turns around and makes her way to the couch and plops down angrily.

"I almost died earlier this week on the island." Daken shares. "Apparently everyone is worried I'll kill them or get them in legal trouble. Regan almost put me down." He moves up behind Anette to rub her shoulders. "Maybe it's time to stop hiding. I can't really hide either, just harder to notice."

Anette looks up to Daken as he mentions almost dying. "What? Why? What happened?" She glances him over and shakes her head though. "Not surprised though. You are a few screws loose."

Daken tenses a bit at the last comment, lips pulling back to reveal his sharp canines. Though it only lasts a moment before he's straightening up and moving away from the couch. "I'm not crazy." he grunts. "And my healing factor doesn't work on her hallucinations. Just have to convince my brain I've been stabbed in the right spot, or have me drown, and I'll lose blood or suffocate and die."

"Please, we're both crazy. It's how we get along so well," Anette says, apparently unaware of Daken's reaction. "Still, what happened? What'd you do that scared them into thinking you'd kill them?"

"Being myself." Daken replies simply. It seems to take him a few moments before he finally moves over and clears off a place to sit next to Anette. "You also missed my birthday. Sixty-nine now. Was going to throw everyone a party on the island for it, but fuck that. If they don't want to deal with me, they don't have to."

"Alright, you're going to have to give me a little more to go on than that." When Daken brings up his birthday, Anette suddenly grins. "Darn, and I had the -perfect- idea how to celebrate the big six nine. But seriously, happy birthday. We should celebrate with dinner or something. As soon as I figure out how to handle the...mutations."

"Killing. I talk about it a decent bit, apparently." Daken reaches over to brush his fingers through Anette's hair, "We could celebrate here. Takeout, television, then me refusing to sneak out again." He flashes an easy grin before snagging the remote and flicking it off of the Snuggie commercial, over to Blue Bloods.

"Yeah, you do. I can see why they'd be concerned. Still...you just talked about killing? And that made Regan try to murder you?" Anette shifts her head and moves her hair from Daken's "Seriously, what are you trying to hide?"

"What am I trying to hide? The fact that deep down I'm a sensitive teenager with a heart of gold." Daken rubs at his jaw, setting the remote back down. "I don't have anything to hide. I'm Daken, I've been coached to kill since I was young, and I've only been free to become my own man for twenty years." It takes him a moment to realize what Anette was asking and he shrugs a bit. "But yeah, that's all I did. Never touched anybody else, never raised my voice at them, I didn't even mention people I'd killed /recently/. And after I got a decent bit taken from my arm and dropped on my head, Regan found me and talked for a bit. Considered killing me. I considered letting her. But.. Here I am."

Anette looks over Daken a moment, pursing her lips together but eventually sighs and shakes her head. "I'm sorry. It's just...a lot on the mind when I'm questioning literally everything happening in my life right now. And apparently the future, too. Which it still bothers me doesn't seem to bother you as much. It's almost as if you're alright with it."

"Life is what it is. The more you focus on the short fight, the harder the long fight is." Daken reaches up to tap his temple. "We'll stop the sentinels, and life won't be awful. Just have to have faith, and now that you know we have a child and that you don't want one.. The chances of me getting you pregnant are a lot smaller."

"Now see, that's what I'm talking about. We know -I- don't want one. What about YOU. What if I told you right here, right now that I wanted that part of the future to happen, us in love and having a child, what would you say?" Anette turns to watch Daken, closely watching his reaction. Daken lifts his shoulders in a slight shrug. "I'd be an awful father. I'd ask to hold off until I was sure I wouldn't raise a child to be a serial killer. But the difference between you and me? I wouldn't hate a relationship. But I never mention that."

"Shit," Anette hisses, rising and making her way to the kitchen. She reaches up and grabs the bottle of rum from the top of the fridge. "So there is a chance the future could happen? That we could...." she stops speaking long enough to take a swig of rum. "You keep saying the Sentinels will be stopped. What if they're not? And even if they are, what's to say something else won't occur? Love is weakness and family is...family just ties you down. And I don't want do deal with it and if thats something you want...I don't know." With the stress of everything, she really seems at a loss for words and settles for another swig of booze.

"They /will/ and we'll crush whatever comes after that. And I'm not saying I want a family. Exclusive? Yes. Family? No." Daken watches Anette advance into the kitchen. "If you want me to say that in another language, I have Greek, Vietnamese, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish."

"Sadly, I only know German," Anette replies with just a touch of sarcasm, taking yet another swig of rum. "Unfortunately, I don't do exclusivity. I don't do love and I don't do families. And I don't know how to handle the fact that is something you want." The way she's looking down towards her bottle and not looking at Daken suggests there might be more to this than she's letting on.

“It's simple. You don't want to do exclusive? Don't do it. I don't hook up with anybody else anymore, doesn't mean you have to start." Daken turns his attention back towards the television. "I'm not here to make you do anything you don't want to. I'm a murderer, not an asshole."

Anette suddenly pauses and looks over towards Daken. "You don't...hook up with anyone else anymore?" she asks quietly. "I know you're not an asshole. You're...great. And...it's not you I don't trust, actually." She makes her way back to the couch and sits down, bringing the rum with her. "I...haven't seen that blonde in a while either."

"Haven't for a long time." Daken turns to look at Anette. "And you don't have to explain yourself to me either, if you don't want it, you don't want it." He scoots over enough to pat her leg before he settles back into watching Detective Danny Reagen try to find the location of a suicide bomber in New York.

"Fine," Anette grits between teeth at the casual response Daken gives. She continues to watch the episode of Blue Bloods, wondering why Reagan hasn't figured out it's the guy the camera keeps zooming in on extra close. Once the show breaks for commercial, she breaks the awkward silence. "I think we should break it off."

"Seen this episode a few times." Daken says idly. "It's actual the mom taking her kid to see his dad." When she speaks again he turns to face Anette fully, brow moving up his head. "No you don't. You want to give it a shot, but you're scared shitless. What the rum is for." "What gave it away, the fact I spelled it out for you? What am I supposed to do? I can't trust you and as of late...I can't trust myself." Anette takes a swig of the rum, ignoring the comment on it's true purpose.

"You wouldn't have kept me around as long as you did if you hadn't of. Figured it out a bit ago." Daken pushes to his feet and moves in front of Anette, bending forward to press a kiss to her forehead. "If we were still like that five years from now, it means we aren't awful for each other. And it means that either we don't fuck up, or we work through it. I'm not saying we have to try it, but I'm saying splitting off isn't the best thing we could do."

"Maybe the future isn't the best argument to use. You know...the one where I died protecting you and our child? And the only reason we were even THERE in the first place was to RESCUE the child that I couldn't eat or sleep knowing was captured. Do you know what happened when my wings were broken? The first thought in my head? That my child was in my arms. And the entire time I was worried sick over -you-." She pauses a moment to take several gulps of rum, shuddering as it burns on its way down. "That was the most painful moment of my life and I don't want to put myself anywhere near that again."

"That version of the future isn't going to happen." Daken says simply. "One where mutants are treated equally and we live in an apartment in SoHo is." The grin he flashes is almost teasing despite Anette's mood. "Don't worry about what might happen. Just live life while you can." "It's really frustrating how calm you are about everything," Anette says, rubbing her forehead in frustration. "You don't know it won't happen and you don't know something else won't happen and I can't handle it if I have to worry about you. Hell, that date where you got shot gave me nightmares for a week." Anette turns to Daken and looks him over closely. "I just...don't know if the love is worth the pain. And I really don't want to find out which is why we're breaking this off."

"Is it worth the pain? I'm sixty-nine, and we've been living the same way regarding love." Daken crosses his arms over his chest. "If I was a human, I'd be bitter, alone, and probably dead. It's part of life, finding a person that you worry about everyday, that's just as crazy as you and loves you for it. You can take that chance with me, or kick me out. Unfortunately you won't find another person like me, but that might be a bit of a blessing too. And as you've seen, you don't have to worry about me not coming home at the end of the day. Nobody knows how to kill me, except for Regan. Well, Logan too."

Anette falls silent a moment as she mulls over his words before responding. "So that's great for me. But what about you? Let's pretend the world is fine and dandy and hell, maybe we even get married, and we grow old together. Except we won't. I'll grow old and you'll stay as you are. And even if you can stomach 80 year old me with wrinkles and bad hips and fake teeth, eventually I'm going to die. And you'll just move on to the next 20-something. Assuming, of course, you didn't do that 40 years earlier." She turns to look with Daken with a slight, exasperated chuckle. "There really is no winning here."

"You'll have the hottest husband in the retirement home." Daken teases. "If it works, it works. I doubt I'll outlive you by long."

Anette can't help but grin at the comment but quickly stifles it. "Seriously though, you really think this could work? That would could just...date for real and everything will turn out alright? That it's that simple?"

"Yes." Daken nods slightly. "We've /pretty much/ been dating already. Just make it exclusive, and I'll show up with food more often."

Anette turns back towards the TV, just in time to see Reagan finally arrest the woman. "I...suppose we could do a trial run. Of sorts." Anette says simply, grabbing the remote and flipping through the channels.

"You won't be disappointed." Daken promises, moving over to take his seat once more. "Also, if we don't fix the sentinel problem, I'm going to get in touch with my guy in Las Angeles, stock up on some of the older Russian anti-tank grenades."

"Your guys in...you know what? Not even going to ask," Anette says before leaning up against Daken as he sits down and eventually settling on that Snuggie infomercial from earlier.
