Heather and Paige

2017-01-31

"We want the neighbours to think we are respectable."

Location

<NYC> {Teamhaus} - Harbor Commons - Lower East Side

For the time being, Teamhaus is rather bare except for the furnishings that came with the apartment, and there is a list on posted on the wall that says:

Please imagine this space has the following items:

  • A couch
  • A table
  • Chairs
  • A throw rug
  • A potted plant
  • A desk
  • A piece of art
  • Whatever Paige wants

Keys? Check. Messenger bag? Check. Heather unlocks the door carefully and swings it open this Tuesday afternoon. This is her first time entering since being able to move in, and she seems pretty cautious about not breaking any of the knobs or doors. She plops her messenger bag down near one of the outlets, plugging it in and starting the charge on her phone before anything else, a habit that she has whenever near an outlet. She glances back and plays, "I was skeptical about if they would accept me. But they were very nice. Even the brain voice." The first thing she does is unfold a list and tape it to the wall while the message is going.

"The 'brain voice'," Paige repeats from behind Heather, an amused tone tinging her voice. "The 'brain voice' is Hive and, yes, he is very nice. Did I ever tell you I had a crush on Steve. A, uh, -small- crush." The older girl pauses, squinting at the list Heather attaches to the wall, ears flicking up once in curiosity. "What is this? Why am I imagining this? How do you know these things aren't here already?" She inquires with a hint of skepticism as she reaches to flick on a nearby lightswitch. "I mean, who knows what's here, right?"

"I assumed it would not be furnished, and we would get to furnish it over time," plays Heather, gesturing towards the sign. "You never really told me anything about Steve. But it is okay if you had or have a crush on him. He is handsome and famous." She pauses the tape, points at her head and nods a couple of times, hitting play again: "Right. Hive did seem nice. I made a note in my journal. I wish I was better at brain communication. It is not a strength of mine."

"It's not one of mine either," the horned mutant admits with a sigh. "The first time I met Hive, he somehow reprogrammed my brain to understand sign language and other languages. It wore off afterwards, but it...was very disturbing." Turning around, Paige's eyes widen and her ears flick up as she sees what the light reveals. Hardwood floors in all their glory with a kitchen, complete with sleek steel countertops and modern appliances, to the right of the entrance and an empty room, separated by french doors and frosted glass panes framed in wood, to the left. While the blonde girl's mouth is agape, she seems unable to form words.

"It sounds a bit disturbing," plays Heather, as she accompanies Paige on the look around the place, "But interesting. To gain a skill just like that. I like learning things. Imagine if it were so easy." Heather quickly changes from shoes to very thick fuzzy socks so that her moving doesn't create a racket, but it does cause her to slide around some as she tries to start and stop. "Everything looks very new and clean. We will have to keep it that way. We want the neighbours to think we are respectable." This is just something she heard her mother say many times.

"Neighbours, right..." Paige replies vacantly with a nod as she starts following Heather. It takes a moment for her to gather her thoughts again. "Wait, what?" she asks, directing her attention to the other girl. "We're having neighbours over? When? And I like learning new things, too! That's why I'm going to learn how to cook better - well, cook -more- things, you know? A variety, at least. And that way I can feed you better - you know, keep you going. You said you wanted a place where you could hot meals, right? So I'm going to learn how to do that for you. I mean, I might like cook a bunch of things at once that you can later heat up on the stove or something. I'm not really sure would stay good over a number of hours. But since I don't have a job at this exact moment, I can---I mean, what, you eat...like fifteen meals a day...?" The goat girl's voice trails off as she furrows her brows and her ears wilt, realizing that cooking for Heather may prove to be rather time-consuming.

Opposite the entry there is a small hallway with a bathroom opening up to the left and a closet opening to the right. A door at the end leads to the bedroom.

"Yes. Fifteen meals a day," plays Heather, nodding a few times rapidly. "But I do not expect you to cook for all over those periods. I just like to idea of once in awhile. Preparing calorically dense sandwiches to fill in the gaps I can do." She walks along with Paige, occasionally slipping around with her stockinged feet. "And I don't know if we will have neighbours over. Many of the people here are your friends. We could invite people from another room over. But only as many people as we have chairs."

Paige eyes Heather, the glimmer of an amused smile playing on her lips as she watches the other girl slip about. It's a moment of a familiar normality; an actual place to stay - a home. A home in which one does not care how they slip and slide. And then there's also the familiarity to Paige's own condition; walking on hooves and differently-formed legs persists in being somewhat difficult. "Friends...More like acquaintances in my book," she explains, gesturing with her hands. "I am rather indebted to them and their kindness, you know? I just wish I could give back to them. Then, maybe, I could see myself as being one of their friends. Regardless, they're very, very nice people.

The end of the hall way has no door and appears as a mirror of the entry way. The walls on the right, as one enters, are similar to those of the empty dining room; frosted glass panes framed by dark-stained wood, the center panel being the door. On the left is a common area, easily capable of holding a couch and a coffee table and perhaps a few armchairs, but not much more. Large windows line the wall opposite the two as they approach the area.

Heather watches Paige's gesturing as she records her roommate, her tinted goggles up on her forehead so that it's clear where her eyes are looking. "You can be their friend and still feel indebted if you want," she suggests, while pulling at her hair to unknot a few strands. She peers at the common area and plays, "I want to get a couch for this area. I saw some couches while I was out finding things to sell before. People leave them out a lot. But now most of my work is online again. Oh! You have the food stamps forms? We can submit those now that we have an address. Useful."

"I don't want to be indebted to them. They are incredibly generous people and deserve better than what I have given them so far. Which, to be completely honest, is nothing." Paige shakes her head gently before wandering over to open the bedroom door to peek inside, ears flicking as she responds to Heather's question. "I, uh, have the foodstamp forms, yeah. And a couch would be a wonderful idea," she announces as she steps inside, disappearing into the bedroom. "Yes, very useful, the address," comes the goat girl's voice, now muffled a bit by distance. "The bed is veeeerrrrrrrrryyyy comfy." This remark is made while she lays down on her back on the mattress. "Mmmmmm."

Heather shuffles quickly to where Paige is checking out the bed. "I think that during your eight hour sleep time I will likely sleep once or twice for an hour each time. Would you like to share the bed during these times? We do not have a couch yet. Otherwise I would sleep on there during those times." She pulls the goggles down so that they hang loosely around her neck again. "I will likely use the shower soon." She takes a deep breath and sighs, but it comes out as just a squeak, and looks around, "We have made progress. I told you that we could do it. We will need to figure out where to go from here."

"Sharing the bed is fine," Paige replies, waving a hand in the air as she turns onto her side and closes her eyes. She doesn't completely turn, however, as doing so would likely squish one of her ears uncomfortably. "That's fine. Showers are fine." Despite the lack of pillows and sheets, the goat girl seems to be quite content to lay on the bed. "Progress...yeah... -You- did it," she mumbles in correction, perhaps drifting off to sleep.

"We did it," repeats Heather, nodding a few times rapidly at Paige emphatically. As she notices Paige's eyes are closed, she puts her finger up to her lips and starts to back out of the room. It's time to go take a long hot shower. Maybe it'll even be ten minutes long.
