Iolaus, Cage, Jane

In Absentia

2013-05-17

Luke meets the Iolaus, offers his services.

Location

<NYC> Spin - Harlem

Half record store, half music shop, Spin is a music lovers' haven. The record side of the store holds everything from vintage vinyl to the newest releases, both new and secondhand, with miscellaneous paraphernalia -- posters, t-shirts, pins -- held in bins along one wall. On the other side of the store, dedicated musicians can find a wealth of sheet music, from modern rock guitar tabs to classical violin and piano pieces. Behind the counter, higher priced rare items are secured away behind the glass. In a departure from the usual bent of this type of store, the shelves are kept meticulously organized.

It's early Friday night in New York. Too early for dinner, and much too early for the clubs, but Luke Cage has knocked off from work, at least. New York's most recently famous mutant is wandering the aisles at Spin. They're playing new music from a local rap artist on the speakers. Its not overly loud, nor overly /good/, but its local, so you know, represent. Cage bobs his head as he peruses, until finally the little kid who's been shadowing him for the last ten minutes gets the nerve to come up and ask for his autograph. The 6'4" tower of muscle and bone squats down slowly and offers the boy a sly smile. "Sure kid," he says quietly, and scribbles his name in the pad the kid had. "Don't do drugs though, or I'll kick your butt." He's smiling, but the kid takes it seriously. "Oh, NO WAY, Mr. Cage. No way. Thanks!" And the kid bolts for the door. Cage smiles, watching him go, before slowly rising to his full height again. He moves deliberately, not needing another bull in china shop incident. Heavy load, coming through.

The door to Spin opens and closes again a moment later, and two figures slip into the room. Neither are particularly tall - certainly nothing to match Cage's height - though one of the two might be famous in a very different way from Luke Cage. Dressed in a white dress shirt and grey slacks, Iolaus' blue eyes scan across the room, smiling at the other occupants of the store, before he takes a few steps forward and begins browsing through one of the near racks - M through S, Electronica.

Iolaus' companion is a woman, dressed in a well-kept pair of blue jeans and a meticulously pressed black shirt. When she looks around the store, however, her hazel eyes are not friendly. Assessing, measuring, yes, but not smiling. Even as the doctor turns to the music, her eyes stay on the other occupants of the store, following not far from Iolaus with perfectly even, perfectly timed steps that reek of precision.

Still sort of watching the door where the kid just left, Luke can't help but notice the couple walk in. The woman he doesn't know by name, but he recognizes the type. If she isn't paid, professional protection, he'll eat his non-existent hat. The man however takes an extra a moment, and then it clicks. Being in the security business as well, Luke knows better than to just plow over to him and stick his hand out. He takes a route which keeps a sturdy, but low record case between him and the pair, making himself less threatening, and then says quietly, "Hey, um, it's Sadro, right? Dr. Sadro?" He spreads his hands out at his sides to indicate peace and adds, "I'm a fan of your work, sir."

Sure enough, Jane's reaction certainly puts her in square in the role of security. As someone approaches her client, she tenses slightly, edging just that much closer towards Iolaus. Her reaction is not at all mirrored by Iolaus, who looks up from the music and smiles, widely, at the other man. "Saavedro, but, yes. And thank you." He bows his head and his smile widens a little bit. "I have to say, I'm sad to say it is not a sentiment that is shared by many people." he says, eyes twinkling. "That just makes it all the better to hear, though."

"It'll get worse before it gets better, I'm sure," Luke says, relating to he doctor's sentiment. "But we gotta start somewhere, right?" Luke glances between Iolaus and his guard before showing his hand and extending it carefully to him. "Luke Cage. I've been working for mutant rights too, some. Doin' what I can, anyway. Security is my main game though, and I'd be happy to help out if you ever need extra bodies on site some time." He shrugs and nods at the current guard, "Not to step on anyone's contract, of course."

"Always," Iolaus says, a light tone of amusement in his voice. "But it does get better. 'The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.'" the doctor quotes, brightly. He reaches out without hesitation to grasp Luke's hand with a firm grip, smaller hand barely able to wrap around the other man's. This interaction gets a soft grumble under the breath of his guard. "Oh, how rude of me. Luke, this is Jane - Master Sergeant Jane O'Toole; she's the head of my security department at the clinic. She'd be the one you'd want to talk to about that part of the business," he says, with a warm smile.

"Damn, I thought there was some rule about gorgeous women in security... Something about unfair distractions for the bad guys. Nice ta meetcha, Jane." Luke's smile is gregarious, and sort of charming in his way, though he isn't particularly handsome or charismatic. He offers his hand to the woman in greeting, but is fully prepared for possible repercussions. They happen.

Jane does reach out to shake the other man's hand, but her grip is firm as iron. "That's /Sergeant/ or ma'am." She growls, eyes flashing at Luke. Iolaus watches on at this with bemusement for a moment before his head turns down to begin looking through the music. He mutters something quietly under his breath in Greek. "Your funeral." Jane turns the flashing eyes on Iolaus for only a moment before they return to Luke. "We are always hiring guards." she says, releasing the other man's hand and slipping her hand into a pocket to come out with a business card. "If you are interested, give me a call." she says, extending the card between two fingers towards Luke.

Luke accepts the brunt of her fiery gaze with a mischievous grin, but says only, "Yes ma'am," Apparently Luke's momma didn't raise no fool. "Maybe we can talk the details out over dinner sometime." He accepts the card without any more forwardness and tucks it into his inside jacket pocket. He is wearing, by the way, a leather jacket over a tight, bright yellow t-shirt, with dark jeans, and biker boots. When he moves it makes his jacket creak. "So, Doc, I know its kinda a rude question, but I'm a direct kinda guy - I was just wondering, you know, most people who aren't part of a group themselves usually have trouble getting with that group's program. You know, used to be race, or orientation, now its, you know, us muties. Anything particular draw you in? If you don't mind, of course."

Jane snorts in amusement at the other man's suggestion of dinner, but even as she turns to glance around the room again, her eyes do have a faint glimmer of interest deep in the back of them. Or is it laughter?

"Discrimination is discrimination," Iolaus says, politely, though his eyes are still on the music underneath his fingers. "One kind is not too different from the other, and we are all injured - all people, mutants, humans - when we sand by and let our brothers and sisters fall underneath society's boot." His eyes look up and into Luke's face, flickering over his expression. "I don't need to be a mutant to think discriminating against them is wrong. And I'm a doctor - how better to heal the hurts of the word than with healing?"

Luke nods as well, also looking over the record section. Electronica is almost certainly not his section, but he nods at the doctor's comments. A nod of approval, perhaps? One could perhaps understand someone wrongfully imprisoned for 3 years to develop a natural suspicion of sincere kindness. Better safe than sorry, anyway. "Yeah Doc, I get you. If we only look out for our own, things get lonely real quick." Luke seems to accept things and switch gears having gotten the answer he was hoping for. He grins then and says, "Geez, but its too bad about your music taste, doc. Or you shoppin' for a gift?" The light in his eyes says its all in good humor, but teasing nonetheless.

Iolaus' smile is genuine as he blinks at Luke, and lets his eyes sweep over the other man. "One could say the same thing about your taste in shirts." he teases, lightly, as he glances back down to the music. "It kept me awake through many late nights in grad school. My taste is eclectic, but I am certainly willing to admit that electronica is a good part of it." He grins. "Better than much of the pop music that's out there."

Luke lets out a soft, yet rude noise at the mention of pop music. "Well yeah, we can team up on /that/ fight, for sure. But you can trust me - disco ain't dead. Not as long as I'm around, it's not." Luke grins, looking wistfully out the window, dreaming of an age the 20 year-old missed completely, and one might even be able to imagine the man with an afro, complete with comb, rocking around a disco-balled roller rink.

Iolaus looks over the other man and blinks several times. One of his eyebrows twitches and he tilts his head to one side. You can almost see the gears in his head mashing angrily together as they try to imagine the other man roller-skating it up with that giant afro. He shakes his head, once, sharply, in a desperate attempt to rid himself of that iamge. "Disco. Right." He blinks and then smiles at the other man. "Not... exactly my thing either, but certainly better than pop."

"Well ok," Luke says, nodding. He knows disco is not for everyone. Not everyone can be /that/ amazing. "I should probably head out, Doc, but I'm glad I ran into you. And Master Chief over there." He knows he got it wrong, but was it wrong on /purpose/? Either way, he winks at her, grins his bright white smile. "I hope to see you soon." It's hard to tell who he meant this last bit for. Maybe both? Just to be safe, he's keeping a record bin between him and Jane on his way to the door. "Take care, doc."

"It was good to meet you as well, Mr. Cage." Iolaus says, that same smile hanging off of his lips. It widens a little bit at the annoyed expression that spreads across Jane's face, and he pats her on the shoulder. "Have a good rest of your evening, Mr. Cage." With that, he turns back towards the music. Once the door has closed behind Luke, the faint sound of a slap upside the head can be heard. "Ow! What was that for?" Iolaus complains.
