Fiona and Mai celebrate New Years in Times Square.

Location

<NYC> Times Square

Lights and billboards scattered over the skyscrapers that line Times Square. A gaggle (murder?) of tourists are spread through the square at all hours of day and night, gawking at the tall buildings and taking photos of nothing in particular. Times Square is a place of theatre, certainly, but mostly it is one giant tourist trap that no self-respecting New Yorker would be seen in for longer than it takes to leave.

No self respecting New Yorker would be in Times Square - this much is true. However, Fiona neither considers herself a New Yorker nor does she have a HUGE amount of self respect right at the moment. She's walking around in the absolute throngs of people streaming through Times Square - on New Years Eve no less. The place is fucking PACKED - wall to wall people, many of them drunk, and fences keeping certain areas clear. The streets are lit by the bright electronic signs. Fiona herself looks bewildered - she'd seen this on TV before, but nothing can quite prepare one for just how big of a MESS it is. For the dragon girl, this means getting jostled quite a bit as she's barely even visible to most people. It's possible that she has Mai in tow, as maybe the only crazy enough to come with her. THIS WAS SUCH A HORRIBLE IDEA!

Mai is indeed walking along with Fiona, having to stay fairly close to not risk losing her friend into the sea of people gathered to Times Square to celebrate the final countdown of the year 2016. She sort of is a New Yorker, but new years eve is like the one time in year when coming to this place is sort of cool, as its something that one just has to experience. She is in quite happy mood for once, perhaps the overall celebration cheer of all the people around is actually contagious, but she is smiling as she looks around. "If only people would find this kind of spirit through the whole year and the world would be much happier place." she offers to Fiona. "This is something that everyone should experience at least once."

Maybe it's Mai that dragged Fiona along then? Who can say. Fiona is aware that Mai is talking - getting the gist of what she is saying but unable to pick up on the specifics. She's too busy trying not to get smacked in the face. A tall man up ahead almost does this - but instead his elbow lands on the somewhat sharp tip of one of Fiona's horns... which still is not super comfortable, but way LESS comfortable for the dude's elbow. "Hey, ow! What the fuck?!" he exclaims - even though really, he's the one that should be apologizing, not Fiona! "S-sorry," she squeaks, ducking around and away. After much bobbing and weaving she and Mai make it to within sight of one of the barricades.

Mai doesn't let even rude people like that to dampen the mood, she is determined to have good time, and more importantly, to make sure her friend has it too, during the new year. "Happy new year!" she offers in return to the elbowing man with a smile before the ebbs and flows of the crowd move the two away from the man. "We totally need to drink toasts for the new year too." she notes to Fiona while patting the backpack that she brought along. "Once we can find a good spot! I managed to acquire something sparkling." and probably containing some alcohol too, but hey, its new year, there is no better excuse to get a bit wild.

"... alcohol?" Fiona peers at the bag, looking somewhat uneasy. "I don't know... I've never drank before... and..." she checks her phone, "Should we do that in front of the barricade? People might see..." Actually, people might see her mutant FACE there too, so, there's that. They'll probably be MORE angry about that. "I guess maybe it doesn't matter..." she trails off, "Actually, we probably don't even need to get to the barricade," she points upward at the lit ball.

Mai laughs softly at her friends words. "There is always first time for everything. Besides, its nothing strong, at most it will make you a bit giggly." she offers with a wink, then gives a look towards the barricade. "We don't have to do it right over there though, would probably be better if we can find some -slightly- less busy place, where can at least like not get constantly pushed around by the sea of celebrants."

"Oh... well... I guess it's okay then," Fiona bites her lip - STILL not sure that it's okay! What if they got on TV and her parents saw her?! She'd... be in... about the same amount of trouble that she's already in. So there's that at least. They're definitely getting close to time for the ball to drop. "Before, or after?" she asks.

Mai leads the way through the crowd to get wee bit to the side, where they can lean up against a wall while still being easily able to see the ball. "Well, usually its customary to do the toast when the clock hits midnight, and then drink right after." She explains as she opens her backpack and pulls out a bottle of champagne, not the real thing of course as thats fucking expensive! but cheaper similar thing. Along with a pair of plastic disposable cups, which she hands for Fiona to hold as she starts working on uncorking the bottle.

Fiona holds the cups as they *casually* lean against the wall, totally not underage or anything. The crowd begins to cheer a bit louder - the energy is... something else! The young mutant can't honestly say she's been anywhere like it, except maybe at a big sports event or something. Then suddenly, there's a microphone - and a camera! A big camera. "Look at these pretty faces! Ladies, where are you from?" the microphone juts forward to Mai's face as she's messing with the champagne.

Mai is not overly worried about the age check for the moment, as there likely wouldn't be enough cops in the whole country to be able to check papers from the huge mass of people gathered to the square at the moment, let alone in New York alone. Shes biting her lower lip a bit as she struggles with the cork, almost having it open now... and then that tv team shows up, what luck to be picked from among all these people. She doesn't get too phased about it though once she recovers from the initial surprise, as its not like she has parents watching at home that might see this. Instead she just gives a big smile towards the camera along with an enthusiastic little wave to any friends who might be watching. "Right from New York, ready to embrace the new year!" she replies with a giggle as she pops open the cork to emphasize the point. "Happy new year to everyone watching too!" Letting the foam from the opened bottle to subside before she fills up both of the cups.

Fiona blinks as the microphone turns towards her with an associated 'woosh' sound (only in her brain) - everything kind of happens in slow motion. "Missouri!" she shouts, as the man with the mic realizes they're filming a mutant. They decide to go with it, however. "And if you could have one thing in the new year, what would that be?" they ask, as Fiona takes the cup of bubbly. "Uh, I just want everyone to get along and stop hating each other!" she shouts over the crowd noise, "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" And with that, the camera is gone - as of yet, no adverse effects. Fiona looks relieved.

Mai gives another wave after the tv crew before turning back to Fiona with a smile, taking one of the cups and lifting it up to toast with her. "I can definetily drink to that." she offers encouragingly. Giggling a bit then. "You know, when I was a kid, I always wanted to be like a movie star, but this is actually first time anyone has ever filmed me, I guess better late than never, eh?" she offers jokingly.

"Y-yeah, maybe!" Fiona agrees, peering at the plastic champagne glass and then raising it to clink dully against Mai's. Or more like a clack. Pretty soon here, the ball will be dropping; the noise is reaching rather defeaning levels. Fiona sniffs at the champagne a little. One time, long ago, she had a sip of her dad's beer - this smells... well, slightly different! Less bad-tasting, for one.

Mai smiles as she 'clacks' the cups with Fiona and then takes a sip. its nice and sparkly, and like she said, fairly mild in the alcohol levels so a glass or two should not cause any too strong effects. "Isn't this something?" she asks with a motion towards the general direction of the ball. "At least for one night of the year, people can all be happy together, like even those tv people didn't mind that you looked different. If only it would be like this all the time. So how do you like the drink?" is inquired with a curious look, holding the bottle at her other hand as now when its been corked its no problem to pour more with just one hand too if needed.

Fiona takes the cup and goes bottoms up, gulping it down. Her face screws up in kind of a puzzled look but she manages to swallow. "Blech!" she wipes her mouth on the back of her sleeve, "It's kinda bitter! Kinda tastes like drinking soda without the flavoring!" she giggles. Unbeknownst to Mai (or Fiona for that matter), Fiona is a /total lightweight,/ and the alcohol hasn't hit her system yet. "It's not... bad... though?" she ponders that question for a moment.

Mai can't help but giggle as she watches Fiona just chug the whole cup down, and the resulting expression. "Oh wow, you might want to savor it a bit more. At least I have found it to taste better that way." she instructs as she takes lot smaller sips from her own cup, though is happy to fill up Fiona's cup again, and while at it, fills up her own too even if it wasn't quite empty yet.

As the ongoing music and festivities keep happening, Fiona smiles at Mai's advice; then suddenly, the music stops! A ticking noise begins and the ball atop 1 Times Square begins to drop. "Hey, pour me another, we can drink when it hits!" she suddenly suggests excitedly. Some people in the crowd are beginning to count down... '55... 54...'

Mai cheers as the countdown starts. "Woot, its happening!" she exclaims, a bit more loudly than needed, not that it likely needs to be pointed out as one would have to be blind and deaf to not notice, but she is getting a bit tipsy from the sparkles getting to the head. She does happily fill up the cups for both of them, the bottle almost empty by now. Starting to count aloud too as she holds the cup up, ready for when the counter hits zero to drink with her friend.

By this time, they ball has really started to drop, "TEN, NINE, EIGHT!!" Fiona takes the cup from Mai, holding it and looking up and around in awe at the crowd of thousands. Maybe the most people she's seen in one place, certainly the most drunk people! "SEVEN, SIX, FIVE," the crowd continues, as she and Mai shout in unison along with them (or at least Fiona THINKS that's happening - she's swaying side to side now a little, so)... "FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE..." the dragon girls starts chugging down the rest of the champagne (again, forgetting Mai's advice), "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"

"Happy new year!" Mai shouts out along with the crowd, even if it is unlikely to be distinguishable from the choir, before drinking down her own cup too, this time she also does it faster since its the big moment! "Woohoo, can you believe it, its 2017!" she offers with a giggle. She does have fairly decent tolerance for alcohol so she is only a little bit tipsy and extra cheerful after the half of a bottle or so.

"Yeah, it's CRAZY!" Fiona grabs one of Mai's arms for support, leaning on her slightly. "This is NUTS, I can't believe we're in New York City on New Years!" she grins, her glasses slightly askance. She holds up the now empty glass again, "Whoo!" shouts the dragon girl, tail flailing about wildly - even brushing against a bystander, who doesn't look like they appreciate it all that much.

Giggling as she watches that slightly unsteady stance from Fiona, Mai lifts up the bottle to give Fiona a refill, only to realize its empty. "Whoops! I guess the bar is closed for tonight." she informs with a giggle. Looking around some and seeing that the crowd is slowly starting to thin now when the big moment is over. "I think we should start to head back home though, I bet that the sub is going to be packed in a bit once this crowd starts dispersing, would be good to get out of the way for that!" She offers, giggling more as she watches that flailing tail.

"OKAY!" Fiona agrees enthusiastically, pointing... somewhere. "Um, which way was that again?" she loops her arm around Mai's shoulder, laying her head on it and hiccuping. She is, by this point, very obviously drunk - off of only two glasses of alcohol, no less!

Mai wraps her arm around Fiona's back to help support her as she picks up her backpack again, even being responsible enough to toss the empty bottle and cups to a nearby trashbin instead of just leaving them on the street like no doubt many others are doing. "Damn girl, that sure got up to your head fast." she observes as she starts walking towards the subway station with her friend. "Hmm, not sure if you can back in to the commons at this hour, might be better if we go to my place, yeah? The couch is pretty comfortable, I should know, I have fallen asleep on it more than once while watching tv late." she suggests.

"Sounds good to me!" Fiona nods, pointing in a random direction and shouting, "Onward!" As the crowd thins out slightly, they're beginning to garner odd looks from passersby. Mutants behaving properly are one thing, but drunken nuisance mutants... well, those quickly attract police attention. It's a good thing that the lower east side isn't really that far away.

That was... another reason to why Mai wanted to leave while the crowd was still fairly thick, as she definetily doesn't want to attract police attention now, not when they are underage and more or less drunk. Giggling tipsily as she leads the way to the subway and gets them in the right one that takes them to Chinatown, which is just next to lower east so it wont even be long walk back to the commons in the morning for Fiona!

Her apartment isn't anyway overly big, its a pretty cheap one really, consisting of short foyer, door to the bathroom at one side, opening to one decent sized room that combines living room and kitchenette in one, including the aforementioned couch and couple chairs and a table, a shelf which holds the tv, and a shelf of dvd movies on top of it, and a couple shelfs of books above that, pretty usual stuff. The most noteworthy part is probably the section of the wall covered in black and red cloth, that has a number of martial arts weapons on it, a pair of butterfly knives, a tai-chi saber, a pair of tonfas, and a shortspear. Below them there is also framed photographs of two chinese people, a man and a woman. Finally, there is a small bedroom that is separated from the rest of the apartment by a sliding door, which is currently open though.

Mai fumbles a bit with her key before getting the door open and then helps her friend inside. "Okay, here we are!" she informs as she bumps the door closed again behind them.

Fiona proceeds to stagger into the living room and flop down on the couch, curling up and... falling asleep right there. It's probably around 12:30 or 1 AM by this time - and being on your feet all evening in a huge crowd can be really tiring. Hopefully, it's forgivable!

"Just let me get you..." Mai starts as she heads towards the bedroom, then pauses when she sees Fiona already sleeping on the couch. "... pillow and blanket." Just standing there for a moment before shrugging and getting a blanket anyway that she covers Fiona with, but skipping the pillow as the girl doesn't seem to need it. Before getting herself ready for bed as well.
