Brief interlude, after the speech.

Location

<NYC> 303 {Holland} - Village Lofts - East Village

This apartment is cheerful, in its way -- bright and airy, its floor plan open and a plethora of windows providing it with an abundance of light. The tiny entrance hall opens into a living room, small, though its sparse furniture and lack of clutter give it a more open feel. The decor is subdued and minimalist; black and white is the dominant theme, with occasional splashes of deep crimson to offset the monochrome. The couch and armchair are upholstered in black corduroy, the low wide coffee table central is black wood and glass-topped, and a few large pillowy beanbags provide additional seating by the large windows that dominate the back wall. Towards the back, a couple of doors lead off into bedrooms and bathroom, and to the right, the kitchen's tile is separated from the living room's dark hardwood floors by black countertops. Above the bedroom to one side, there is higher space; a ladder climbs up to a lofted area looking down on the living room. Standing in front of the partition between living and cooking area is a large fish tank: one lone Betta, blood-red, swims regally among several species of black and silver fish. A hallway beyond the kitchen leads further into the apartment. Another bathroom stands just into the hall and the farthest door leads to the apartment's final bedroom, the door usually kept shut to hold in the acrid fumes of turpentine and paints from within.

The apartment is full, already, of music when Jax arrives home. Spencer's in his room, and the rest of the apartment is filled with the quiet strains of a violin; coming from an actual instrument and not a speaker, Spencer's babysitter has clearly been Up Waiting. Possibly Up Fretting, judging by the undercurrents of worry that tinge Ryan's thoughts, even if the music he plays is soft and soothing, empathic notes easing worry out of the /rest/ of the apartment, even if not himself.

Hive opens the door, leads the others in, relaxing slowly under the strains of music. He doesn't spend much time with preamble, though; shoes at the door, and then straight to bed with you! Or, well, leading Jax off to his bedroom, anyway: "You look like shit. I'm gonna get you dinner, okay?" Meaning, raid Jax's fridge and see what he can come up with.

Jax's relaxation is much more pronounced, a heavy grateful sigh at the touches of music. Empathy. Ryan. "There's cookies. And stew." In that order. He's only too happy to be bundled off, collapsing down onto his bed immediately and burrowing beneath the covers. It was /cold/ out there.

The music doesn't stop, but it does get closer, travelling down the hall until -- now it does stop, Ryan poking his head in at Jax's door and then slipping in altogether. "I was watching the news," he says bluntly, looking Jax over with a frown. Looking Hive over, too. "Fuck, man." His lips twitch a little bit, wry. "Did they ticket you?"

"Thing doesn't go into effect till midnight," Hive answers, just as wry. He bops Ryan on the shoulder with a curled fist on his way out. "Try it again tomorrow. They'll ticket you."

"Hrrrngh," Jackson groans. "That wasn't what I was /expecting/ from my afternoon. Seriously. Hrgnh. No. No tickets. I got in under the life-saving-wire." Not that he sounds particularly all that pleased about it. He does hold an arm out to Ryan. /Demanding/.

Ryan is obliging about this, setting his violin carefully down with its bow on the nightstand. He drops down onto the bed beside Jax, tucking into the offered arm against Jax's side. "This could be a problem for you," he says, after a moment of quiet. "I didn't notice anyone'd dug up your name yet but your picture was everywhere. Can't be too long."

"Hrrrngh," is Jackson's response to this, again. He closes his eye, drawing Ryan in close against him. "I guess it won't be. Maybe I'll just have Flicker jump me to and from work," he says with a grin. "Fff. I hope nobody pesters the kids. How's Spence?"

"He was working on spelling," Ryan assures Jackson. "Which means he's probably playing with his K'nex now that I'm out of the room. He was doing okay with the spelling though, mostly. Though he's talking about trying to teach Jerusalem to do his homework. I dunno if even Bastian can manage that one for him."

Jax snorts, head shaking. "He could try. If he managed I'm sure he could get /extra/ credit." He quiets, for a while just lying there. Watching the light from one of his many lamps.

Music fills the room again, quiet, even without Ryan's violin. It is soothing-soft again. Gentle.

Jax listens to this in silence, a small smile playing on his lips. And then: "I wouldn't pay that ticket anyway."

"I know." Ryan sounds tired. "This can't possibly hold up."

Jackson doesn't answer this. He closes his eyes, nestling close to Ryan and waiting for Foods.
