In Absentia

(Part of Infected TP.)

Location

<XS> Library

Xavier's librarian might hope the library is a quiet place to sit and study, but with a school full of teenagers that is not always the case. Nevertheless, it is certainly a treasure trove of knowledge, well-stocked with a wealth of books on its high shelves. Its reference section is vast, though its fiction is as well (much to the delight of many of its students.) The wide octagonal tables and smaller armchairs are often crowded with students, though the whispered conversations that often take place leave some doubt as to how much work is getting done at any given hour.

Rasa is not gone from the Library long that night, returning no more than an hour after helping hir roommate down to the med lab. Ze looks a little worried and perhaps resigned when ze re enters the room, hir blue hooded sweatshirt zipped up to hir throat now. Ze heads to where Sebastian left his books and laptop and frowns a little to find them gone. Ze glances left and right before turning toward the information desk and peering around for help. If no one is immediately visible, ze moves further into the back recesses of librarian land, heading for the office.

Even after normal school hours, Mallory is still quite easily found behind the information desk a little further in to the Library. A dual stack of papers to one side seems to indicate that she was originally grading papers, although she's now leaning against the edge of the information desk, ankles crossed and bracing her in place, a worn paperback held open in one hand. She's dressed in dark colors as always, a black and gray skirt with an overlay of black lace masks her legs and tail for once, though her hooves peek out from beneath the hem, paired with a dove gray sleeveless top - a black blazer appears to have been abandoned behind the desk at some point. At Rasa's approach, the librarian looks up from her reading, dark gaze fixed on the student for a moment before she speaks, "Hello Rasa. May I help you with anything?" Her voice is a light, practiced whisper, loud enough to be heard, a look of concern passes over her features as she slips a bookmark in place in her book and sets it aside. "Is everything alright?"

"Well, maybe no. Well, yes. I'm okay. It's just, I know I left - well, Bastian left a stack of books with his laptop on a table over there and now they are gone. I went and promised him that they would be fine so I could take him to get some rest." Rasa is looking a little embarassed as ze glances back to where the books used to be. "By chance, do you have them?"

Mallory listens, and nods, a realization dawning on her face. "Oh, yes. I was not sure what had happened, or when he'd be back," she says, moving around to behind the information desk again, leaving her book (Demons Don't Dream, or so announces the cover), "I moved everything back here, just in case he didn't claim it tonight. Better safe than sorry." Sure enough, the stack of papers, books, and the laptop are lifted and set on the counter - the loose papers have been neatly tucked into different colored folders to keep them from getting mixed up. She smiles warmly, and pats the stack of materials, "It should all be here, if you wanted to take them for him. I believe... the two of you are room mates, yes?" The corners of her lips tug down into a faint frown, concernedly, "Is he not feeling well?"

"Oh." Rasa smiles as the books appear on the counter in front of hir, hir head tilting to one side as hir fingers riffle quickly through the edges of the papers and folders, hir smile widening. "Oh, I think he'll like that." Ze looks back up and draws in a deep breath. "I think so. He heals pretty quickly, so I don't think he'll be sick very long. He doesn't usually get sick, so it's most likely a stress thing. You know what's going on with his Pa and all, right?" Ze leaves the explanation up to Jax, apparently. "Which reminds me: I told him not to worry about his English paper, because of his sick and that Dr. McCoy would write him a note to excuse him from class, but since you're the teacher and all, I figured that I could tell you directly."

Mallory smiles gently, and nods at the folders, "I always used to hate it when someone moved my notes around when I wasn't looking. They're in folders based on the stacks that he had them in when he left. Teacher did that for me one time when I had to be excused from class unexpectedly." Behind the desk, she hops carefully onto the backless stool she has replaced the computer chair with, watching Rasa, now at eye level with the student. There's a slight nod at mention of Sebastian's father, "I am aware that there were some... stressful situations recently, but I do not know the details. Regardless, I wish him a speedy recovery." At the worry about the paper, Mallory waves a hand, smiling, "I'll talk to Ha... Dr. McCoy and get the note for my files. But, please, if you speak to Sebastian this evening, let him know not to worry about it. When he is feeling better, we can discuss a timeline for the paper."

"Oh great. I will tell him that. I kind of don't know if he'll just sleep it off downstairs or come back up when the pain reliever kicks in." Ze sniffs slightly as ze rests hir hands on top of the books and wets hir lips. "I suppose that depends on when the pain reliever kicks in and whether someone feels the need to rouse him, eh?"

"Certainly. Either way - he seems to be in good hands. Dr. McCoy is an excellent physician, and you are apparently a very concientius room mate," Mallory says with a smile, nodding to Rasa. "If he is sleeping comfortably in the med lab, I imagine Dr. McCoy will just let him rest there. No sense in making him trudge all the way back up to the dormitories if he isn't feeling well - pain killers or not." Mallory looks curiously at Rasa when ze sniffs, "Are you doing alright?"

"Hmm?" Rasa looks up at Mallory when she asks, a little confusion clouding hir brow. "Yeah, sure. I'm fine. Just have a lot on my mind. I mean, you kind of start taking stock of your vitamin C supply when someone who never gets sick finally ends up with a cold." Hir amusement is distant and fades slowly as more thoughts start filtering through to hir skin. The left side of hir face starts reading like a to do list: Review Paper for tomorrow, readings for history, did I do the geometry?, check on Ivan, get juice for me when I pick up his dinner, (so you tried to put a fire out, but you used gasoline) check B's schedule (ask Shane) for note takers, Tell S about B - he probably knows some how (I feel like I'm trying to hold smoke)... the list just keeps scrolling in hir silence, song lyrics starting to filter in more often as ze finishes the list. "I haven't been here that long, but maybe you know. What happens when everyone in a boarding school gets the flu all at once?"

"Just was checking," Mallory says quietly with an easy smile, making attempts to avoid reading the words that appear on Rasa's skin, though the song lyrics get a raised eyebrow. "Ah, you have been here longer than I have, I'm afraid, if only by a little. When Thomas... Dr. Winthrop," she seems to stumble over calling her brother by his professional title, "Were little, if we both got sick, the tutors just didn't come through." She grimaces faintly, "I'm afraid I'm not the person to ask. I would imagine if everyone is sick, they'll cancel classes. Since a good portion of the faculty and staff live here as well." A thoughtful look, as she considers the possiblity, "It hadn't occured to me, to be honest. I'll have to ask Dr. McCoy."

"Ahhh. Well, it probably won't happen, but I guess we'll see." Rasa takes the books, notes, and laptop in arm, hugging them to hir chest. "I'm going to drink more oj preventatively. That's about it. Thank you again, for taking care of the books. And giving Sebastian a bit of a break. I'll see you in class tomorrow, okay?"

Mallory stands and stretches her legs, nodding to Rasa as ze departs. "No trouble at all. I hope he feels better soon," she says with a smile, starting to go about packing up her book and papers into her messenger bag, apparently getting ready to close out for the evening. "Have a good evening, Rasa. I'll see you in class tomorrow," Mallory says, and once Rasa has departed, clicks off the desk lamp that had been lighting her work area.

Rasa waves a little as ze leaves, and then ze's off!
