With its sharp crystalline edges and sleek lines knifing up into the sky, this building is one of the most /distinctive/ new additions to the neighborhood. An angular structure in glass and steel, the tall tower has a deceptively slender look to it that is belied by the heavy security as soon as you enter the doors. The front doors are frosted with the Clinic's logo -- a rising sun over a rod of Asclepius -- a motif echoed in many places throughout the building. Visitors to the clinic must first pass through a small mantrap, guarded by some of the Clinic's security guards; once they make it through the metal detector and airlock's double doors they emerge into the much more hospitable lobby. With dark wood floors underneath and comfortable black and red couches at its edges, the high windows give the room an airy feel. A bank of elevators to one side carry visitors to the many destination floors, while the wide welcome desk at the other side is manned by a security guard ready to help point visitors in the right direction. One of the isolation rooms in the basement, it is pretty standard, with two beds, a few scattered chairs, and a pair of bedside tables. This particular room has been repurposed as a rest area for the non-employees helping out with care of the recent rescuees; a small cooler was wheeled in at some point to provide beverages and snacks to fuel Kate and her healing assistance. At the moment, Kate is lounging on one of the beds, eyes closed, though she is not necessarily asleep, just resting her eyes. She is dressed in a pair of old nursing scrubs, the top with dancing teddy bears that were once upon a time far more brightly colored, the scrub pants a faded blue color. Her long hair is pulled back into a slightly rumpled pony tail, a few curling strands loose in front of her face. A little half eaten baggy of snacks is beside her in bed, apparently forgotten in favor of a brief nap. Might have been a rather sudden nap as she was probably in the middle of a conversation with Corey. Dressed in a plain grey teeshirt, already stained from various things having gotten on him, a pair of tan khaki pants, and a pair of white tennis shoes, Corey is filling up a pair of coffee cups with a good amount of sugar and cream. He seems a little antsy to be moving back to the patients, but he doesn't want to leave Kate when she just passed out. "Ah, I hope this isn't going to happen every time," he murmurs as he sets the preppd cup for Kate in range as he starts to chug back the one he's still holding. There's a quiet knock on the door, soft and managing to sound a little apologetic. Jackson is back, somewhat, to looking his old colourful self; at least in dress if not in his actual form. Tall silver boots with black silver-studded skinny jeans, a purple top zigzagged with silver with flowing half-sleeves. There's a canvas bag draped over his shoulder, purple makeup glittering over his eye, an eyepatch -- silver, with a bright peacock feather in the center -- on his eye. Glittering peacock-hued nailpolish on his nails. "I brought chili," he says quietly. "Um, an' some kale an' -- espresso chocolate chip cookies. I thought the chili'd be better'n -- snack foods." He wanders in to set the bag down on a table, glancing to Kate and then to Corey. "How's she holding up?" He speaks very quietly, teeth dragging over his lower lip. Kate peeks an eye open as Corey sets the coffee down, yawning widely though she attempts to cover it with the back of her hand. "'M 'wake," she mutters, stretching and reaching for the nearby coffee, "I'm up. S'ok." The young woman shuffles herself up to sit a bit more upright, folding her legs up under her to get more comfortable. Quietly sipping her coffee, she grins at Corey, saying apologetically, "Normally doesn't happen, no. I've kind of been pushing myself. Can't, uh, say I've done this quite this often." She yawns again, looking up and smiling tiredly when Jax arrives, perking perhaps a bit much when Jax mentions espresso, even in cookie form. "Hey Jax," Kate says, sipping her coffee a bit more, "I'm fine. Just... sorta tiredish kinda. Thank you for bringing food, though. That sounds awesome." "She's been wearing herself out even with the help," Corey says with a sigh. "Thanks for bringing the food and all though." Looking to Kate as she wakes up, he gives her a nod. "Least the patients aren't quite as bad as the burn victims. I mean, worse in some ways, but yeah." He shakes his head and sips from the coffee as he leans back against a wall. "I can't believe someone would do that to them though. It's messed up." "Joshua'll be back in soon as his shift is done." Jackson scrapes teeth against his lip again, rocking weight back onto his heels and lifting a hand to scuff it atop his smooth-bald head. "It's -- pretty amazing all y'all do for people." A deep flush spreads through his cheeks with this, hand running up along his arm briefly. "Which -- I know you've been /way/ overtaxed, I just -- kinda came t'talk to you about. Well, what it is you do for people. I know what you did for /me/, I just -- wasn't quite sure what the /extent/'a your abilities was. Cuz some'a the folks we got in -- I mean, with everything people's missin' -- there was a few cases in particular I was hopin' to find if you could help." Kate nods, holding on to her coffee cup protectively, grinning over at Corey, "Just sort of needed a little bit of a break. Can't say I was really expecting to be, uh, quite in such high demand so soon after arriving in New York." She chuckles and takes a long pull from her cup of coffee, a blush rising to her cheeks at the compliment. "It's why I became a nurse," Kate admits, blushing more, "Helping people. Healing people. It's what I do. Or try to, anyway." She tilts her head to the side, looking at Jax curiously, "I don't really /know/ the extent of what I can do, especially with Corey's help. I get a general sense of if I can assist someone, or not, usually. Sort of." There is a faint grimace, and she closes her eyes briefly, leaning back agains the wall, dreading what is coming, "Which ones?" "Miracle workers usually are. Least people don't think you're the mesiah yet, they'd be thinking they could get cured touching the hem of your scrubs," Corey grins and shakes his head at Kate's comment. Nodding at Jax though, he offers a bit of a shrug. "And we're really appreciative of Joshua's help as well. I don't know what it is he does, but I feel like I could run a marathon while dragging a truck behind me. Normally I just feel like I could run a marathon," he says with a smile. "And if Kate can't help directly, I'm willing to sit around when I have the time on the off chance it helps. I really don't know what I can or can't do, hell I still don't know why I glowed that one time. But I mean, it's helping that one guy, uh Jim right. And he's mostly closed up the hole in him. Ever hear a tree scream?" "Joshua does --" Jax's lips quirk up into a quick grin. "A little bit of everything, actually." He shivers at the mention of tree screaming, shaking his head and crinkling his nose up. "We're /real/ glad for your help with Jim, too. Didn't /nobody/ know what t'do for him, that was -- thank you." Shaking his head, his eye flicks back to Kate. "You met Rasa, the night'a the raid. Hir leg -- I don't /know/ whether or not y'can /grow/ whole limbs back but -- ze's just a /kid/ and they chopped it /off/. An' with Corey an' Joshua both -- I don't know. I don't even want to talk to hir about hir options without knowin' if there's a /chance/ -- or what's even on the table for hir future." His hand scrubs over his head again. "An' Dusk -- they took his /eyes/. An' his /wings/. An' he's -- he's hurtin' so much now. Wings is -- jus' extra limbs, too, I'd guess. But -- like I said, I don't -- know what to tell people without -- knowin' what y'can do." Kate's snort at Corey's initial comment and grabs a goldfish cracker out of her snack bag and chucks it at her friend, grinning widely at him. "I hope it never comes to that. I am not that virtuous," Kate snorts, shaking her head, "And Joshua has been a huge help. With him and Corey, I can push myself a lot harder, and help so much more." She crinkles her nose up at the thought of a tree screaming, blinking a few times at Corey and Jax, "Oh gosh, oh, that is, no. I can't say I have. That's sort of horrifying." Listening to Jax talk, Kate nods, "Rasa. Yes. I remember hir. There were... skin issues. And other issues, I was able to help with hir skin." She looks at Jax, and considers for a long moment, "I... I think I can. It might not be pleasant, or fast, but I... I should be able to, with help. A lot of help." Her gaze looks to Corey at this, her tone uncertain as she nods slowly, "But I think we can get hir walking again." She closes her eyes again, thunking her head back against the wall at the talk of Dusk, the color draining from her face. "I can't. Eyes I can do, yes. I... I've had some experience with eyes lately. But..." she swallows hard, unable to look at Jax, "I'm limited by my understanding. Of... of medicine and anatomy. Physical mutations... specifically non-human anatomy, is..." Her voice trails off and she looks down at the coffee cup in her hands, guilt in her tone and expression, "I can't. I've never tried, but physical mutations don't... It's fuzzy. To my senses. I'm sorry." Noticing Jackson's reaction, Corey seems like he might be about to say something, but lets it go and nods. "I'm just glad I can help out some, though I still feel like a dufus in comparison to Kate. She's impressive," he says fondly of the shorter woman as she tosses goldfish at him. Hrming a bit at the talk of regrowing Rasa's leg, he nods a bit, running a hand through his hair. "Do you think Micah will be able to help out some with that? I know physical therapy is kinda his thing, so getting someone walking on a new leg may be something new to add to the repetoir, probably easier than learning to walk on a prosthetic." Blinking at Kate's problem with Dusk, he frowns at her problem. "I mean, we can maybe give it a try at least. Hey, never know till it does or doesn't happen right? With the help it should be possible maybe? I mean Joshua is probably way more help than me in that." Jackson's teeth dig against his lip at Kate's answer; for a moment there's a very brief /shiver/ of the lights in the room, and his breath catches. He just nods, though, slowly. He lifts a hand, knuckles pressing slow against his eye. "Okay. Okay. Well -- well Rasa, at least, we can -- okay. Thank you, that's still -- and his eyes, that's still -- I'll talk to them. An' yeah, Micah'll -- no doubt be able t'help hir a -- a lot. An' thank you so --" But then he pauses, a brightness waking in his tone. "-- If -- if you did have something. To study. Some/one/ to study. Like -- like people who -- who /had/ their exact same anatomy. A -- a person. Or people who -- who had their same -- body configuration. Model of -- of what you was workin' towards. Would -- would that -- could that help? Maybe?" He's grasping, but there's -- something lighting in his expression, hope blossoming there slowly. Kate can't bring herself to look up at Jax, just shaking her head, tears dampening her pale cheeks, staring pointedly at her coffee. "I don't know. I... I'm willing to try. But I can't offer promises. I'm so, so sorry about this, I really," she sighs slowly, running a hand through her hair, "I try and read, and study, and learn more. Everything I can in medical journals, so I can try and help, but I haven't. It's never been..." Kate shakes her head slowly, but glances up at Jax at the mention of someone to study, raising an eyebrow curiously, "I... maybe. I'm willing to try. If... if someone can do that. It is going to take a while, and... and I really really can't offer gaurentees. But it's worth a try." There is hope in her voice, but it still cracks with guilt at her short comings. "It's worth a try," she repeats again, nodding slowly. |
