Gabriel meets Donovan, lightbulbs get exploded, same old.

Location

<NYC> Montagues - SoHo

Montagues harkens back to the day when SoHo was filled to the brim with artists, with its mismatched furniture, all plush and decorated heavily with carved wood, but remains trendy enough to keep its newer patrons by making sure that furniture is clean, in good repair and inviting. The antique tables all have been reinforced to seem less creaky. The real draw of the cafe is the smell: fresh roasted coffee mingles with perfectly steeped teas. Spices from crisp pastries mingle with the tang of clotted cream but don't overwhelm too much the scent of chalk on the menu boards.

It's noonish, right now. Outside, the temperature is nice and warm, but the forecast says it'll get cooler later at night. Inside the cafe, however, is a different story. Montagues is cool inside, due to air conditioning, and there are quite a few people in here, due to the lunch rush. In the corner is a table with four chairs. Two of these chairs are occupied, by two young men. One of these men seems Hispanic, with darkish tan skin, dark brown hair, and matching eyes, Across from him is a white male, with brown hair and a matching goatee. Gabriel, the darker man, is currently reading a book and drinking a small cup of coffee. He is wearing short-sleeved brown jacket with a white shirt underneath, a pair of jeans, and brown loafers. Across from him, Jack is munching on a scone and reading a newspaper. His outfit is more peculiar, with a tan duster, long brown slacks, brown boots, and a pair of distinctive calico-patterned gloves. On these gloves, the index and thumb are fingerless, while the rest of the fingers are fingered. Jack quickly looks up to Gabriel. "Gabby, I'm bored. Can we go yet, damn it?".

Sitting at a small table, a tablet in hand, Donovan sips at a blended drink of the White Mocha variety. An apple fritter sits in front of him, as well as a notebook with scribblings. Notes of some sort. He sets the drink down and begins to type into the Tablet, the man, clearly working on something. He pauses long enough to rip a piece off the fritter and take a bite. He does scan the room quickly though, his eyes looking around and pausing briefly on the man with the gloves. He remembered using those kinds of gloves himself. Then he shrugged, went back to typing. His column wasn't going to write itself.

Gabriel took a small sip of his coffee, and then quietly faced Jack, whispering under his breath. "Jack, quiet down, damn it. Do you want to draw attention to us? Look, he's still home. If he catches us, it'll all go to shit. Got that?". He then took another sip of his coffee, looking back down at his book. Jack takes another bite of scone, staring at him, speaking with his mouth full. "God damn it Gabby, you're a fucking pussy.". This gets a few stares, to which, Jack quiets down quickly, but only because Gabriel is staring at him too. "Look, I don't care if he has an army. This is good stuff and we need it fast.". He finishes his scone quickly. "We should just, iunno, trick him?". Gabriel slowly plants his palm onto his face, shaking his head, whispering again. "He has one of the best security systems that a consumer can buy. If he sees us, we'll be arrested quickly. Look, it'll only be about, another half hour. Just be fucking patient, got it?".

Plopping another bit of Fritter in his mouth, Donovan looks up from the column he's writing. He sighs inwardly, 'shit' is all he thinks. Then he looks to the back pack at his feet. In it, are the dark grey hoodie, pair of black gloves, combat boots and the bandana he calls a costume. It had been since he lost that fight with a thief in San Fransisco since he'd worn it. But he always carried that pack with him. He told himself ti was to feel better, but still.

Donovan looked the men over. Carefully assessing each man. He couldn't hear what they were daying, save the out burst, but he'd been in towns where everybody was out thinking nasty thoughts. Oh the Army Life. He sips the Mocha, still watching the men, not really practiced at the art of subtle, but he'd look away if he got noticed, and quickly go back to typing.

Whatever Jack was thinking about, was soon forgotten, when he noticed Donovan watching him. Even though Donovan quickly looked away, Jack was a bit peeved. "Stay right here, Gabby. I'll deal with 'im.". Before Gabriel could react, Jack was standing up. "Jack...don't be an idiot..". Jack smiles, looking over at Gabriel. "'ll be fine. I' promise.". Slowly trotting over, Jack leans over Donovan as he reaches the table. "Ey', you. What the fuck do you think you're staring at, eh?". Jack grins, a bit angrily. "Who the fuck do you think you are, ey'?".

Donovan looks over the tablet and raises an eyebrow. "Me?" he asks setting aside the coffee and hitting send on the tablet. It would really suck to loose all his work incase this guy decides to break the tablet, so he emailed it to himself. "I am apparently the one person out of the two of us with education enough to ennunciate. But other than that, I was thinking, when I realized I was staring at the ugliest mother fucker in the room, I went back to work." He holds up a hand. "My apologies to bring attention to your facial deformaties. But... You DID approach me."

Gabriel slowly rises up, creeping behind Jack to whisper into his ear. "We should go now, Jack...". Jack listens for a second, turning to glance at Gabriel, and then to Donovan. "Not now, Gabby. Need to teach this punk a lil' lesson.". Turning to Donovan, he raises his voice a bit. "Hey, dickfucker, I hear your mom is calling you, go back to fucking her, why don't you?". Jack may be bad at insults, but, his build shows that he could be well in a fight. "You want to go outside, huh, cocksucker? I'll teach you a fucking lesson, pussy.". Jack brushes his hair back, glaring at Donovan, cracking his knuckles. He points his index at Donovan, before muttering. "Bang.". He smiles, putting his hand back down. "And that was just a warning!".

<Public> Cupcake Crusader Hanna returns, and shares cake. Donovan sets the tablet down and looks up at Jack with folded hands on the tbale. "First. I would need to give two shits about you to step outside." He shrugs. "I don't. Second, I stared down the barrel fo a T-90 MBT when I was deployed. Pointing your Cowboy and Indians finger isn't going to bother me. Nor is saying "Bang." He does reach down and grab hsi pack before he stands up. "You are also keeping me form my work. So. I think I'll find a quieter place." He then puts the tablet in the bag, and slings it over his shoulder. He then heads toward the door. "I'll tell your mother I said hello."

As Donovan gets up to leave, one of the staff members gets himself out from behind the table and moves closer to the group, his face drawn and serious. He looks Donovan over first before looking at Jack with a bored, impatient look, his hands at his sides, feet shoulder width apart. Even as Dovovan leaves, effectively removing the responding party of Jack's contention, the staff member remains where he is. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave as well. Can I put your coffee in a to go cup, or find you a box for your food?"

Jack pushes the staff member aside, pointing his finger at Donovan again. "Step aside, cockfucker. This one is for real." Gabriel quickly realizes what Jack is doing, and dashes for his hand. Jack begins lowering his thumb onto his index finger, but before he can, Gabriel catches his wrist, redirecting his hand to the ceiling. Jack's thumb slams down onto his finger, producing a loud "BANG!" sound, as smoke leaves his finger. Suddenly, a lightbulb above where Donovan was sitting explodes, causing glass to harmlessly rain down. Jack looks around. "Fuck, fuck! I can't go to jail. GIVE ME A CALL, GABBY!". Jack runs for the door, past Donovan, escaping. Gabe looks around, brushing his hair back, facepalming slightly, as he turns to the staff member. "Look, call up your owner. I'll pay for the damages of the light bulb. No need to call the police or anything." He sighs, as he turns to Donovan, slowly approaching him. "Sorry about that, are you alright?".

Donovan actually grunts a little. The lightbuld exposed electricity and he by instinct absorbs it, causing the lights to flicker briefly. He closes his eyes, nad takes a few breaths to steady himself. Then he looks at the man speaking to him. "I'm fine." He says evenly, his eyes scanning and looking for the guy that ran. "Look. You pal there? He needs to watch himself. And you should find better people to hang with. Ones that won't get you in heaps of trouble. What if I'd been one of those guys who has powers and doesn't care who he hurts?" He shrugs a shoulder. "Good thing I'm jsut a journalist." Then he continues on his way. Looking to make sure he isn't followed.

The barista is shoved and then he moves to intercept Jack again, but pauses, allowing his friend to step in. When the lightbulb explodes, he steps back, frowning. "You've got to be shitting me," he exclaims, turning a wild eyed stare at Gabriel as he starts ordering him around. "Sorry, man, it's out of my hand. Company policy is to call the police and turn over any and all security footage of troublemakers. If you want to stick around and explain yourself, fine. But you should probably leave, take your friend with you - and don't come back." He eyes Donovan's departing shoulders. "Any of you. This is a threat free eating establishment."

Gabriel nods. "Again, sorry about that.". He quickly jots a note down, with a phone number. "Give this to the manager, or whoever. It's my phone number, I'll pay for the lightbulb.". He nods, grabbing his cup of coffee, book and bag. He glances at Donovan as he leaves. "Sorry about that. You take care of yourself.". As he steps outside, he lights a cigarette, takes a glance around, and steps off. "Goddamnit, Jack.".
