Late afternoon Tuesday, Iolaus's phone rings. It's Hive. Ringing. The phone picks up and catches the tail-end of a conversation. "I promise you, it's finished, Vernon. Just run the safety simulations so we can give it to him before the goddamn lymphoma kills him. -- Hello, this is Iolaus." For a long moment there's silence on the other end. It stretches on until Hive remembers OH YEAH have to use the /audible/ voice, telepathy doesn't stretch through phone signals. "Io. S'Hive." His voice sounds hoarse, scratchy-rough from disuse. "Sorry we've been, uh, bothering you so much." He doesn't sound sorry. "You busy?" The sound of footsteps against the floor sounds as Iolaus walks, somewhere. "I have a couple minutes. What's up, Hive?" he asks, a trace of distraction in his voice. "You read the news lately? Kids getting abducted. Blood getting drained. Creepy fucking shit." "Yes. And I can't tell you anything, either, Hive. Medical confidentiality rules are strict." Iolaus says, tiredly. It sounds like this is not the first time he has repeated that phrase recently, with the almost automatic nature that he says it. "Uh, what." Hive just sounds flat. Tired. "I don't want to know anything, dude. Friend had a run-in with the freakish fucking hellbeast doing it. Left some decent gashes on him." "Oh." Iolaus sounds surprised, and then apologetic. "I'm sorry, Hive. It's been..." he trails off, tiredness in his tone, but it is gone when he resumes. "Is he at the hospital?" "No. He can't." Hive hesitates, and now, at least, he /does/ sound kind of apologetic when he continues. "Sorry. You've been busy as fuck, too. I'll, um." He swallows, hesitates again. "I'll let you go." "He can't?" Iolaus chases the question. "No insurance? Physical mutation? -- Oh, hi, Henry." he says, this last slightly quieter. There's a longer hesitation. Rather a good deal of reluctance in Hive's tone when he says, "/He/ winds up in the hospital, it'll be -- /news/. He doesn't need nosy-ass journalists linking him to all this shit and outing him." There is silence at the other end of the line for several moments. "One moment." There is a rustle of fabric against the microphone, and very faintly, Iolaus can be heard talking in the background. "Hey, Marissa. Hey. Sorry, I need a favor. Can you pack me a suture kit and a set of tools in a sterile bag? I've got to make a house call." A pause. "Thanks." he says, gratefully, and he pulls the phone back to his head. "Where?" "Jax's building. Apartment 304." Another hesitation. "Thanks, Io." "No problem, Hive. I'll be there in... twenty five minutes." There is a click. |
