"But we can order delivery like a /boss/."

Location

<NYC> The Roost - Harbor Commons - Lower East Side

The second level of this house takes up less floor space than the ground floor, owing largely to the open sweep of balcony that overlooks half the home below. Up here the floors are in natural hardwood, polished and smooth. At one side of the balcony, again, a door leads over to the adjacent unit in the house.

One door off the balcony leads to a quiet office space, with a wide metal-and-glass desk, long sofa and armchair opposite a large pair of bookshelves. A tall glass door in the large windows on the back wall leads out to a wide outdoor balcony overlooking the river.

The second door leads to Dusk's bedroom, dominated by greens and greys. He has finally actually gotten himself a /proper/ bed to pair with his dresser and bookshelf, king-sized and settled low to the ground onto a solid wood base with a number of drawers built into it. His desk holds the desktop -- somewhat literally. The desk /itself/, with see-through glass body and softly glowing lights inside, has been configured to /be/ the computer case. Closer inspection of a pair of small decorative aquariums sitting to either side of its three monitors finds them to /also/ be computer cases, their inner workings submerged in a pale blue liquid on a bed of aquarium pebbles alongside plastic plants and little plastic castles or fake coral. In this bedroom, too, a door leads out to the same balcony outside.

Capping off the balcony at its other end is a guest bedroom, large wood-frame bed with a small end table, dresser, a hammock-chair hanging from the ceiling in a corner, a desk by the window.

It's quite early -- or maybe it's very late, depending on your point of view. The sun is risen, if only recently, though it's hard to tell through most of the heavy blackout curtains that shade the upstairs windows in Geekhaus. Most of the upstairs windows, anyway. The ones in the guest bedroom have been thrown open wide, and it puts a low growl in Dusk's chest as he slips inside. He brings with him the rich scent of cocoa from mugs held in his hands. One wing (iridescent, today, in shades of blue and silver and white, patterned in fishlike scales) is curled around him, the only semblance of clothing he currently bothers to wear. "This is as close to breakfast as I manage." His crooked smile is not particularly apologetic about this fact. "But we have cereal. If you're hungry."

Early or late, it's probably unsurprising that Jax hasn't actually been sleeping. He's in bed, certainly, in a lightweight pair of soft shorts and a thin undershirt, but his laptop and drawing tablet are out. The room is half -filled, a fuzzy malformed forest-scene, Miyazaki-inspired, that fades away as Dusk enters. A faint smile curls Jax's lips. "I can cook breakfast, honey-honey. Thanks." For the cocoa, presumably. He's eying it hopefully.

Isra glides out of the more shadowy reaches of the hallway to loom in the guest room door, nursing her own cocoa. Her color scheme resembles Dusk's, but the pattern on her wings looks like sunlight shining through water. The silver on her horns and talons glimmer even in the faint, early light. She wears a deep blue sarong patterned with white stars, wrapped loosely around her lanky, muscular frame and tied off at the back of her neck. "Good morning." Her voice comes out soft but resonant, both sets of vocal chords engaging. "I almost offered to cook, but I do not think we have yet recovered from my last attempt."

"I didn't come to wheedle breakfast out of you." Which isn't exactly a /no/, either, as Dusk takes a perch on the edge of the bed, setting his mug down on the nightstand and turning the other over to Jax. "I just wanted to see how you're doing." His smile stretches wider, sharp and fangy. "/I've/ recovered, but Jax doesn't heal so fast."

"Well, y'didn't wheedle, I offered." Jax closes his laptop, setting it and the tablet both aside. Hands freed up, he takes the mug from Dusk, leaning in against the other man's side. "I'm --" In the pause that follows he closes his eye, takes a slow sip of cocoa. Opens his eye again to look around the clean little guest room. "... aright. I don't..." He trails off, here, faltering and then shaking his head. When he looks back up, it's with a brighter smile. "Was it really so bad as all that? You know, I done offered to teach DD how t'cook. Maybe I should move the lessons t'the common kitchen an' open 'em up t'everybody."

Isra's eyes, luminous green in the half-lit doorway, fix on Jax, unblinking. "It was an insult to kibbeh, but not inedible...unfortunately." Her wings rustle and settle against her back. "It even made me ill." She says this rather mildly, but coming from a six-foot-plus gargoyle woman known to consume raw meat and boiled coffee, it has a certain gravity. "I could probably benefit from a cooking lesson or two, but you needn't take it on yourself, unless it so pleases you."

"What does everybody need to know how to cook for?" Dusk's expression is deadpan. "We have you here." His wing unfurls from around himself, curling around Jax's back instead. "...alright." It's sort of an echo of Jax's answer. Sort of a question. He sounds quite unconvinced. "How long you gonna be staying here, then? Not that you're not /welcome/. Just feel like there's -- levels of 'alright'."

Jax's nose wrinkles, head thumping down onto Dusk's shoulder. "Only until --" But for this he has no answer. Another sip of cocoa. A faint shiver of misty shadow around him, soon to fade. "I think it'd please me," he answers, then. "Can be kinda nice sometimes," there's a faint blush in his cheeks here, "rememberin' what things I /don't/ suck at."

Isra tilts her head to one side, ears pressing back against her hairless scalp. She steps into the room and sinks to the floor beside the bed, surprisingly graceful--and surprisingly tall when seated, just about at the right level to look Jax in the eye. "You excel at quite a lot, and you could use more reminding." The words come out as calm and even as wonted, and her face remains impressive, but her tail sweeps slowly to and fro.

"That's a long-ass list, man." Dusk tips his head down, pressing a small kiss to the side of Jax's neck. "You know, I always feel like it goes without saying, but it's probably -- actually helpful to say it. If there's anything you need from us you know we're here for you, right?" Though here a sharp smile flashes. "... so long as it isn't cooking. But we can order delivery like a /boss/."

Jax laughs, quiet, though the shift of darkness flutters around him again. His next gulp of cocoa is deeper. "I'm mostly frettin' about the kids. It can't be easy for Spence with -- I'm just gonna be stressed as anything till all this legal garbage is settled an' -- an' if /that/ goes ugly --" His teeth sink down against his lip. "... I mean, he's got plenty'a family lookin' out for him, but. I. Fret. I jus' want this over an' life -- normal again." His frown deepens. "... or whatever normal's gonna end up lookin' like."

Isra's head tilts in the other direction, quizzical. "Certainly you have ample cause for stress. If there's any way we can help--" One of her wings stretches out, massive silver thumbclaw tousling Dusk's hair. "--other than order delivery, however /impressive/ our mastery of that task--please do tell us." She rests her elbows on the bed. "Remember that /you/ have family looking out for you, too."
