Mallory, Sage

In Absentia

A brief exchange in the library.

Location

<XS> Library

Xavier's librarian might hope the library is a quiet place to sit and study, but with a school full of teenagers that is not always the case. Nevertheless, it is certainly a treasure trove of knowledge, well-stocked with a wealth of books on its high shelves. Its reference section is vast, though its fiction is as well (much to the delight of many of its students.) The wide octagonal tables and smaller armchairs are often crowded with students, though the whispered conversations that often take place leave some doubt as to how much work is getting done at any given hour.

Morning on the last day of finals for the winter semester has come at last, with the promise of two weeks worth of break in sight at last. Despite Spring Break starting soon, winter is still reasserting its presence, a glistening coating of frost shimmering in the early morning sun outside the windows of the library. The Great Hall is full of students nervously reviewing notes over breakfast before the start of the final day of testing. In the library there is a quiet but steady stream of students passing through to print papers and grab last minute books, a few that have passed the night hunched over books in the quiet study room at the back.

Mallory has been sitting at her desk in the library for some time, idly swiveling back and forth on her backless chair while she leans over to read a book in front of her. Dressed impeccably as always, Mallory wears a dove gray suit coat over a cream colored blouse, the top buttons left undone to show off the thin gold chain and simple colored glass pendant, paired with a simple black pencil skirt. There is a cart of returned books waiting to be sorted sitting behind her, and a small stack of returned books at the end of the counter to be checked in. She takes a long sip from her thermos of tea, dark eyes defiantly looking at her own 'no food or drink' sign sitting on the desk - the thermos is vacuum sealed and locked once she is done with her drink. Overall, it appears to be a rather quiet morning, and from the looks of it, she might still be working her way through being fully awake, despite being dressed and at work already.

Sage, on the other hand, /is/ fully awake, she doesn't tend to get out of bed until she is. She's actually been in the computer room for a bit now, just coming out now. What she's doing, is anyone's guess at this point, as she's briefly glancing over everyone in the room beforee heading towards an aisle, pulling a book off a shelf without even glancing at it for more than a second, before heading towards Mallory's desk with it, a glance, her voice emotionless.

"Hello, Ms. Winthrop. Would you mind if I check this book out? I do not require it for a class, but was interested in reading it at some point. One of the few of his I have not read yet.". The book in question is Carl Sagan's 'A Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space'.

Sage is probably known for not dressing..too well. Her XS jacket, a pair of sweatpants, and shoes make up her outfit, along with her trusty ATHENA rested on her eyes.

When Sage approaches, Mallory glances up from her book and offers a warm, if slightly tired, smile to the other teacher. She quickly takes off the pair of gold reading glasses that had been perched at the end of her nose, tucking them into her coat pocket with a somewhat guilty look.

"Good morning, Ms. Sage. Just that one?" she asks softly, slipping a scrap of paper into her book to hold her place and letting it fall shut - a travel guide to Southern India, several pages tagged with little yellow sticky notes.

Mallory accepts the book from Sage, flipping it open to the back page to scan the barcode on the cover, typing information into the computer as she does, her eyes squinting against the glow from her monitor as she does. "You can bring it back after break, if that is acceptable? Or if you want it out longer than that, just let me know, and I'll add a date extension." All that done, Mallory closes the book and hands it back to Sage, "Here you go. And there is not so much a need for formality, you may call me Mallory if you would prefer."

"I can bring it back after break, I will have no need to keep it after I finish reading it. Eidetic memory.". Sage isn't bragging, stating truths, like she likes to do. As she takes the book once Mallory is done with it, she nods with a reply. "Thank you, Mallory. You may call me Tessa or Sage. The latter has been used almost all of my life but the former is legally my first name.".

Sage lingers, as she changes the subject. "I take it you and Mr. Suresh are heading to India for break?". Sage glances towards Mallory as she says this.

"Thank you, Sage," Mallory says with a fanged smile, leaning back in her chair, her long tail coiling around the foot rest of her perch to keep from being rolled over, "I have the tendency to retain books, or at least passages from them, after I read them, but that is more from training and habit, I suppose." She offers a shrug, glancing briefly around the library for incomming students, before looking back towards Sage at the question about travel. "That is the plan, yes. Bit difficult to believe it's actually happening this week," she offers quietly with a subtle smile, patting the travel book a bit nervously.

"I hope you have as good a time as possible, but be wary of what it is like over there.". Sage tilts her head in a farewell, before taking the book back to...her lair in the Computer Lab.
