New Year's Day "I want to change the world." |
Location
<BOM> Beachfront - Ascension Island | |
Largely rocky and desolate, the majority of the waterfront on this small island is an unwelcoming place. Craggy and forbidding, lined with jagged black rocks, the coast here can take a fair bit of scrambling to navigate. Here and there, though, the coastline levels out to narrow sweeps of pebbly beaches littered with shells and seaweed carried in on the frigid tide. Occasional old trunks of fallen trees dot the narrow beach, victims of the storms that frequently plague the island. One small stretch of the western shore holds a small dock, a few boats usually moored there. Tucked off the mainland coast in Jamaica Bay, the buildings and lights of the city can be seen far across the water. The beach still holds the remnants of partying. The spent embers of bonfire, some shells of fireworks, some empty bottles; the Brotherhood was ushering in the New Year with just as much fanfare as the rest of the city, last night. It's quiet now, though. The lap of waves on rocks, quiet humming of some lively tune Ion had been playing cheerfully late last night, the crinkle of a large garbage bag as Natalie makes her way down the beach picking up litter. She's in boots, skinny jeans, a tan leather jacket buttoned up against the salt-spray breeze coming in off the water. Red hair whipping in against her face as she leans down to pick up a cardboard husk of rocket and pop it into her bag. Ash is coming from the other side of the beach, doing the same thing, helping to gather up the trash and keep their beach clean and green. Or... brown, really. He's dressed in his heavy work clothes composed of thick canvas and cotton wool, held together with heavy duty brass zippers and snaps. His boots are the steel toe'd variety of light sueded leather, but they are beat to hell and stained with paint and concrete. He looks up when he hears Natalie singing, a bright grin pulling at his lips. "Is your head still ringing from last night too?" "Worth it." A quick smile appears on Natalie's face. "/So/ worth it. I may never hear again and my stomach disagrees /strongly/ with the thought of food but --" SHRUG. "Such is the price we pay for --" She frowns down at the beach, toes thoughtfully at a condom draped over a beer bottle. Nudges both into the bag with the toe of her boot. "... brotherhood." Ash raises an eyebrow when he spies the condom and shakes his head. "Yeaaah. That ... might make me lose my love for food faster though. The mess... is fairly far flung across ... well everywhere. How did we make such a big mess so quickly? You'd think all the lights were on and we were trying." He rolls his shoulders and looks out to the surf. "So... New year, yeah?" "I still love food," Natalie assures Ash with a small chuckle. "We're just taking a small break." She pushes out a small breath, looks out toward the waves also. "Clean and fresh." Her hand drops to her side with a crinkle of plastic. "Made any resolutions?" "Resolutions? I don't know if I have resolutions so much as I have goals now... It's my first new year in this brotherhood... and I want to change the world." Ash shrugs, a shy little smile pulling at his lips. "I just want everyone to be able to wake up in the same exquisite misery that we all woke up in this morning." There's a short pause before he adds, "and I want to find Kay... and all of my other brothers and kin in prison and camps and set them free." Natalie's hands clap together. She leans forward with a joyful whoop, a fist stretched out for a knuckletap. Her expression slides back into something more somber after, though. Something more serious for the agreement: "To a New Year. And finding every-damn-one of us the freedom to wake up hungover as fuck." Ash raises an empty beer bottle he finds on the ground in toast. "Freedom to be hungover. Amen." He tosses the bottle into his bag, the ensuing crash and clink adding the proper sound effects. |
