This town is a small hamlet, one of the last few working to preserve its historical identity in Westchester County. The cobbled streets are neatly upkept, and the quaint storefronts have been largely unchanged for ages -- in their facades, at least, even if the businesses inside them here and there have kept pace with the times. Here and there. Many, though, have been owned by the same families for generations.

The business district is a single drag through the center of town, with houses branching off of the main street; in this small town, it's as common to see horses as cars making their way down the road.

There somewhat of a chill in the air tonight, and the wind was doing what it could to really drive that chill in, just in case anyone happened to miss it. There was in fact one such soul that trying his best to ignore the cold. A young man was out jogging hoping the exercise would keep the him from feeling the cold, he was wearing grey track pants, and a fairly warm looking red jacket. Nic stopped jogging for a moment and looked up at the clear sky "Hmmm nice night" he said seemingly to himself before a gust of wind caused him to hug himself and rub his arms for warmth "Geez it's friggin cold in this country though..."

Nekara is out fairly late as well, even though not jogging, just walking, and she is certainly not a fan of the wind either, or the cold in general for that matter, having a fairly thick looking, long coat on, fully buttoned up, hands held in the pockets to help them stay warm as well, although she seems to have forgotten to wear a hat, which causes her to have to keep her head tilted forward some to brace against the wind better as she walks, although still regularly glancing up or at some building or another that she passes, getting to know the neighbourhood that she now lives in.

Nic shivers and jumps up and down a bit taking a quick look at his watch, he gives it a rather annoyed grimace, maybe he's not making good time. He's about to take off again and almost launches himself directly into Nekara, he tries to stop himself before bowling directly into her. "Whoa geez, sorry lady, I didn't see you there... I'm not paying enough attention... I must be more distracted than I thought making miserable time and this cold isn't helping..."

Nekara isn't exactly looking front of her that closely either with how she is trying to shelter her face from the cold wind, and as such she only notices Nic when he is like -right- front of her, blinking as she looks up and pulls her hands out of the pockets of her coat to front of her to brace for the impact, though with Nic screeching to a halt they end up only lightly pressing against his chest without any further body contact happening, before she takes a step back to get a good look at him, blinking a few times. Nic might notice the very unusual color of her eyes, as well as her general skin tone which might indicate she isn't from around here. "Whoa... I apologize, I should try to better watch where I am going." speaking at roughly same time as Nic does, which makes her to laugh a little at how they both apologized at same time, glancing up to the sky for a moment, before looking back to Nic with a nod. "Yes... the weather is not good. I just hope it is not always so cold here." there is a noticeable accent in her voice, even though her English is fairly fluent.

Nic absently rubs at the back of his neck and gives somewhat sheepish smile with maybe a hint of nervousness. He also looks down at his own chest where the woman's hands had touched him when nearly trampled her, seeming a little disconcerted. The touch wasn't unpleasant or uncalled for, but something just felt a little off "Ehh yeah no... totally my fault, I gotta remember I'm not alone out here when I'm going for a run." He takes a small step back so he's not crowding her, and possibly so he had a quick exit if he needed it... why does it feel like he should run from her? "Oh So you're not from around here either? I'm from California... New York is super cold."

Nekara moves her hands back into her pockets fairly quickly, mainly because it is -cold!- shivering a bit even despite her thick coat as she focuses her attention more on the young man, who coincidentally enough is pretty much exactly same height with her, which if nothing else, at least makes it easy on both of their necks to look at each other. She certainly doesn't -look- anyway specifically intimidating at least, as she is more on the lean side, some might even use the word 'thin'. "Yes, you could say that. I just moved here less than a week ago, actually, I got a job at the boarding school nearby, I am from a bit further away than most, I imagine. Which makes it quite rough to try to get used to this weather." Noticing the wary reaction from the man she offers a slightly apologetic smile. "I am sorry about that... I can't really do anything to it."

"The boarding school nearby? You mean Xavier's? Wow, what's it like to work there?" Nicodemus watches the woman's hands as she slips them back into her pockets and shifts his weight from one foot to the other. It was nice that she was about his same height at least, it seems like all the men Nic meets are over six feet tall, and women were typically shorter, which wasn't really a big deal, just meant neck craning "I guess we're both in the Big Apple for similar reasons. I came to go to school, you came to teach." He blinks when Nekara apologizes "The weather? nah, most people can't, not your fault though, I hear I'll get used to the cold, but not sure I believe it."

"Yes, Xavier's. And, taking in that I just moved in last weekend, I haven't really had enough time to actually start running classes, still in the part about working out class scheludes and getting to know everything there, next week will start actually teaching. But overall, I have so far found the atmosphere quite welcoming." Nekara gives a somewhat curious look to what Nic says about his reasons for coming. "Oh? Are you a student at Xaviers's?" she asks, not really that familiar with the area yet, she doesn't know of any other schools nearby. Then shaking her head at the last part of what he said. "No, I mean, for making you nervous. It is... part of my mutation... and I cannot really do anything about it." The fact that she is a mutant probably fairly obvious already from that she moved from far away to teach in this particular school.

Nic nods quickly at Nekara's explanation "I see, yeah I heard it's real welcoming for just about everyone." He shakes his head when she asks if he goes to Xavier's "No, I wanted to, but my father put his foot down..." He sighs and grumbles a bit "I guess we sort of compromised I'm going to Rye, it's close enough to see some friends, and maybe visit the campus once in a while." The realization shows in Nic's eyes when Nekara explains she's a mutant, and the nervousness is due to her abilities "Oh, you're a mutant, I guess that explains the skittish feeling; pretty lady and you seem nice, I shouldn't feel like I need to flee from you."

Nekara nods slowly as Nic explains his school situation. "Well, that is understandable, if you are not a mutant, I don't imagine overly many parents would want their children being surrounded by them. And, prejudice aside, there is actually valid reasons for that too, as many of the younger ones might not be able to fully control their powers yet, which could lead to accidents." she explains. Chuckling a bit at the last part before replying. "Yes, that particular dilemma has ruined quite a few relationships for me... not exactly the most convenient type of mutation... though at least it helps to keep order in class." she notes jokingly... probably.

Nic shrugs his shoulders "Yeah I guess, but the mutant students aren't immune to those accidents, if safe enough for them, why not for me? Anyway Dr. Montoya said no way, and mom convinced him Rye was a fine school." He unconsciously fidgets nervously before catching it and makes an effort to keep his fingers still. "Sorry to hear that hun, sounds rough I guess it's not something you get used to... Oh" The young man says realizing he has been talking with this woman for some time without giving his name "I'm Nic by the way, well Nicodemus Montoya to be exact, but just Nic to most people."

"It is not so much that they are safe for it, but more that they don't really have a better option, whereas normal human students, do, so they don't need to be in the risk zone. That is what I imagine most parents would conclude, and I can't really blame them. But, if you have friends in the school like you said, you can certainly easily meet them if your school is nearby." Nekara explains, nodding then as the introduction is given. "Nic is definetily much less of a mouthful to say, my name is Nekara Kemsit, it is nice to meet you."

Nic nods and waves a hand to dismiss the argument "Yeah I know it seems like a fine argument, doesn't mean I have to like or accept it. Anyway yeah I made some friends there online there, and they were saying how welcoming and pretty much a great place. So Rye it is, my uncle lives nearby so I have someone I can live with while going to school." He grins towards the woman "And if Xavier's is so welcoming there shouldn't be any problem with me going to visit there right?" When Nekara introduces herself he smiles and scratches the back of his head lightly "Nekara Kemsit? Cute name, nice to meet you as well."

Nekara chuckles a bit as she watches him. "I must admit that I do find it quite strange that a non-mutant would want to go in a mutant school so much. Though perhaps people are more open-minded towards mutants in general around here, I know they weren't back home at least, as I couldn't really get any jobs, which is the reason why I moved here in the first place. It is definetily a very welcome change, though, to meet people like you, Nic. As for visiting, I believe that you would need to schelude a visit in advance, which is really a fairly standard practice in most boarding schools, though it should not be hard at all since you have a friend there you are coming to visit." Arching a brow a bit at the remark about her name. "Hmm... I suppose it does sound quite exotic here."

Nic nods his "Well I guess I've always had sort of an open mind as far as that goes. I don't really get what the deal is we're all people. Xavier's seemed like a really cool place, and I had some friends there from online forums and whatever. So school had a good rep, I had some friends there, and I had my uncle for family nearby" He shrugs his shoulders "Seemed like a good idea to me, unfortunately I seem to be the exception more than the rule... too many idiots out there who don't know how to treat a person decently." He smiles at the mention of the exotic name "Well not one I've heard before anyway, not that I run into a lot of Nicodemuses either."

Nekara smiles softly to the teens words as she listens. "It is always good to have an open mind, in everything. History has many examples of why one should never just put a label on people because of what they are and treat everyone under that label the same way. Instead, should judge people as individuals. Because there will always be both good, and bad people in all kinds of groups. It is sad though, to hear that the prejudice is dominant here too."

Nic smiles and shakes his head "Well I haven't been here that long either, but what I've been hearing it's not free of prejudice, but don't write them all off just yet, not everyone's a prick." The teen bites his lip for a moment "Well hopefully your experience will be better here, there's plenty of good people too, even if they're not as loud as the bad ones." He quickly checks his watch again "Ahh crap, it's getting late, my uncle's going to be wondering what's happened to me. Sorry I'm going to have to Jet, maybe I'll see you around though." He offers a wave and turns ready to start the jog back the way he came.

Nekara offers a nod to his words, then at the mention of the time she looks at her own watch as well, it must be contagious. "Oh, now that you mention it, I suppose I should probably head back as well before the gates are locked for the night, as I certainly don't want to be stuck outside in this weather any longer than neseccary. And, if you are going to be around the viscinity of the school often, it is fairly likely that we do, be well."
