Jack & Sergio

In Absentia

'Firefighters should pay for A-B-A-N-D-O-N-I-N-G them.' (Part of Flu Season TP.)

Location

<XS> Art Room - FL2

Smells of paints and chalks and turpentine mingle freely in this room, well-used, well-stocked. Natural light flows in, plentiful through the large windows. The long counter-like tables are speckled with spots of color, and half finished projects often stand on easels or propped in corners. The many cupboards lining the walls are crammed full of art supplies.

Humming along to the instrumental music, an upbeat and jazzy tune, playing from his phone, Jack can be found in the art room tonight instead of down in the great hall for dinner. He was only down there briefly, having grabbed some food then disappeared. Dressed in lounge pants and school hoodie, he's sitting at one of the tables working on a little origami creature. Though rather than using his hands, he's carefully folding the brightly colored paper with his telekinesis.

Sergio appears in the doorway, and clears his throat to make himself known. 'Hiding from me?' Wearing a white and red baseball tee and jeans, the teen wheels himself further into the room. His dinner rests precariously in his lap. Once he gets to Jack's table, he signs, 'Your control is getting good.'

Shoulders tensing at the sound of someone entering the room, Jack relaxes when he sees its Sergio. Letting out a breath, he reaches over to turn off the music. He takes the gloves he's been carrying out of his pocket and puts them on before signing a reply. 'Not hiding.' he replies. There's a pause as he makes a few more folds, the paper ending up in a dog-shape. 'Thanks' he signs once he finishes, making the little paper dog float over to his roommate.

'Keep it on,' Sergio pouts, gesturing towards the phone, 'It's nice not to have the quiet, right?' The teen offers a signature goofy, lopsided smile before he goes about setting out his own dinner. Stuffing his face with one hand, he uses the other to reach for a bold red piece of paper.

Jack tilts his head a moment before reaching over to restart the music. 'Much better than silence' he agrees. Seeing that grin makes Jack offer an unseen smile of his own, happy to see Serg in a better mood. 'Feeling better?' he signs the question with a tiny amused laugh at how Serg stuffs his face.

‘Still nauseous and sore,’ Sergio signs sloppily while he chews, ‘But glad I won’t eat you.’ The last bit is followed shortly by a swat across the table direction towards Jack’s shoulder, though with no intention of actually reaching that far. ‘I saw Professor H-O-L-L-A-N-D yesterday,’ he signs after a pause in conversation, adding a frown.

'I would taste H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E,' Jack tries to joke a little, reaching over to pick out a new sheet of paper even as Sergio swats at him. His shoulder slump after Sergio's next signs though, his signs coming slower. 'Heard what happened then?'

'I bet you taste great!' Sergio laughs.

The more somber question gets a shake of his head, 'I didn't think it was right to ask. I know some people died...' Sergio gulps, 'And he wasn't in control when he was here.' He doesn't elaborate, averting his eyes to contemplate the red paper before looking back up.

'I knew them.' Jack replies after a long pause. He's looking down but not really focusing on anything in particular. The song playing from his phone finishes while he's still, switching to something more classical sounding. 'Firefighters should pay for A-B-A-N-D-O-N-I-N-G them.' these signs are accompanied by lighter objects in the room rattling with an angry telekinetic pulse from Jack.

Sergio's hand slides across the table to take gentle hold of Jack's arm to comfort him. Unable to sign, he offers his friend a soft, but firm expression while giving the slightest shakes of his head. That line of thinking won't do. Eyebrows upturning, he mouths out, 'I'm sorry.'

Jack places one gloved hand on top of Sergio's for a moment, appreciating the gesture. Eventually, he starts signing again. 'Feel worse for S-H-A-N-E and J-A-X. They were closer to the people that...' he just stops, knowing Serg can fill in the blank.

‘He said they flew over the city, and Salem Center,’ Sergio watches, sadly. ‘It’s bad everywhere. People are dying everywhere.’ Letting his hands lower to the table, he allows the classical music from Jack’s phone to fill in the silence. Sergio brings back up the paper, contemplating it forlornly.

'I heard it was bad,' Jack signs with a nod. 'Wish we could help,' he adds. He fell quiet, watching Sergio for a few moments. 'Do you want to make something?'

Sergio flicks his eyes up, a twinkle peeking through the glum expression, 'I don't know how.' Setting the paper down, he gently plucks up Jack's origami creation from earlier to admire it.

'I could show you' Jack offers. 'I learned on the I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T. And books,' his signs explain. 'Could show you how to make a D-R-A-G-O-N bird thing.'

Sergio can't help but giggle some. His nose wrinkles and his eyes form thin crescent moons as a smile spreads over his face. 'O-K,' he signs, a closed-mouth smile still on his face. He sets down the origami and takes up the fresh slice of paper by its corner, ready to get started.
