"It affects you, even if you don't feel it anymore. The cold." (The morning after fixing Evolve.)

Location

<NYC> {Geekhaus} - Harbor Commons - Lower East Side

There's an open airy feel to the floorplan of this unit. The door opens up into a wide expanse of common space that is not so much divided up into rooms as it is simply multipurposed.

Ash-grey resin flooring underfoot runs up against the paler grey of the exposed stone in the walls; between the stone support there are wide floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the river on one side of the home and the Commons' central yard on the other. Half of the space has a ceiling at one-floor height, though half of the space is left open with a balcony up on the second floor overlooking the living space below. A slatted stairway heads up to the second floor balcony; on the other side of the room, a fireman's pole running straight down to the basement provides a quicker way /down/.

The wide open space here is combination living and dining room; in a recessed pit near the windows there are a pair of couches and large armchair around a wide coffeetable; further off a steel-and-glass dining table is surrounded by eight tall black chairs. A full bathroom behind the stairway is done up in dark granite; the glass-doored bathtub/shower is rather expansively large.

The kitchen is tucked off in back, beneath the half-height ceiling; in here the appliances and cabinets and shelving recessed into the wall are in brushed steel, wide grey sweeps of tempered glass countertops running around the edge of the room and a large central island holding stoves and oven and deep double sink.

Adjacent to the kitchen, beneath the ceiling as well, is a sitting area structured largely around the enormous television against one wall, a wealth of video games for a number of consoles held on the shelves around the television. Crates and beanbags and one low futon folded against the floor are arranged in good viewing distance; opposite the television, a sturdy large pen built out of wood shrines a couch amid a sea of brightly colorful playpen balls. A door in one wall opens up to the apartment next door; a door opposite leads down to the basement.

It's fairly early on Wednesday when Jax slips through the door that divides his house from Geekhaus. Not that it's been /closed/ for quite some time, really. Early though it may be he's already dressed for the day, black skinny jeans paired with mismatched brightly coloured socks, similarly bright coloured armwarmers, purple and black diamond-pattered tee, a grey and colour-blocked rainbow sweatshirt. He bears with him a large skillet of tofu scramble and, balanced on his other hand (no potholder in sight), a still-steaming tray of rosemary potatoes fresh out of the oven. It's wobbling slightly precariously as he slips over towards Geekhaus's kitchen.

Geekhouse smells powerfully of coffee. Most of the lights on the ground floor remain off, save for a dim light over the stove that backlights Isra where she stands watch beside a pot of coffee. She wears an immense knitted purple-blue-black zig-zag blanket over her shoulders and her folded wings, each thumbclaws neatly clasping an edge. Her skin gleams silvery gray, her long talons and claws bright metallic purple. One of her ears swivels toward Jax as he enters. "Good morning," this softly, as she looks up from her labor, green eyes shining in the half-light. "Would you care for a cup?"

Jax's eye skips down over Isra, blinking once and then twice as he adjusts to the dimmer light. "Oh -- ohyes. Please. Like maybe the whole /pot/'a coffee." His smile is a little lopsided here. "Straight in a vein. M'brain ain't. Quite on." He trudges the rest of the way over to set the food down on the stove with a clang. "Dusk asleep yet?"

Isra arches a bare eyebrow ridge as she lifts the pot just before it comes to a full boil. "You know how strong I make mine." Not a question; not even a warning, really. She reaches into the cabinet and takes down a black mug with a rainbowy false-color image of the sun during a massive spiraling coronal mass ejection. This she sets beside her black NASA mug, considerably plainer and more chipped, and divides the coffee between them with two deft rolls of her wrist. "I cannot recommend mainlining this. You'd miss tasting it." Her face remains placid, her voice deadpan, as she hands Jax the solar mug. "We might have run out of almond milk, but have...cashew, I think?" She rinses the pot in the sink, her wings lifting and re-settling the blanket across her back. "He was well on his way, last I checked." Pausing a beat, she turns to regard Jax. "Nonfunctional brain aside, how goes your week?"

Jax's smile brightens slightly at this not-a-warning. The eyepatch over his eye shimmers and is replaced swiftly with a reflective visor. "-- I drink coffee for breakfast," he says, chest puffing out slightly as he pulls himself up to sit on the counter. There's still a fair amount of heat radiating off his hands as he reaches to take the mug from Isra. "Cashew's better anyway." His gaze lowers down to the cup, fingers curling against its sides. "Chilly. S'feelin' proper like fall now, y'know? Rainy an' -- cold an' -- rainy. Guess it's prob'ly not the best flyin' weather, huh? They say there's mebbe a hurricane rollin' in this weekend."

Isra smiles, fangs flashing briefly. "Indeed you do." She ducks into the refrigerator and emerges with a carton of cashew milk, which she delivers to Jax along with a covered bowl of raw sugar cubes. "It feels rather more like early spring than early fall--the damp, I suppose. It does not make for pleasant flying, not even for me." She picks up her own unadulterated coffee and, wrapping her long fingers around the mug, leans against the counter beside Jax. "The storm may well spend most of its fury before reaching us, but...some preparation cannot harm."

"Some preparation never does." Jax sets his mug down on the counter next to himself so that he can pour a splash of milk into it and drop -- several sugar cubes in as well. "I been goin' to school with Sugar but t'day..." His nose wrinkles up, head bowing. "Spent so long out in the rain yesterday I ain't hardly feelin' it today." His teeth scrape against his lip, weight shifting slightly on the counter. "There was some real ugly mess out at Evolve."

Isra returns the milk and sugar to their respective places, never relinquishing her own brew. "A particularly dedicated vandal, then?" Her ears press back against her skull, though her expression does not otherwise change. "I suppose Evolve has brand new art, now. I ought to stop by later." She tilts her head, studying Jax minutely through unblinking green eyes. "It affects you, even if you don't feel it anymore. The cold."

"Dedicated an' -- kinda vicious, it felt sorta -- personal. Threatenin'." Jax pulls in a breath, lifting his cup for a sip. "I scrubbed it all off while Shane was rehearsin'. Tag helped put up a new mural. Looks proper nice again now." The smile he tips towards Isra is lopsided. "Livin' up here long enough I think y'get used to a lot. Though my fingers gone /numb/ after two hours'a scrubbin'. But I didn't want Shane t'..." His shoulder hitches up in a quick shrug.

Isra's ears press down and back now, a fairly reliable sign of simmering anger for her. When she speaks, however, her voice remains even, calm, "Threatening? How explicitly, would you say?" She closes her eyes, sips her coffee. "The cold used to bother me, when I was a little girl. You'd think these would have made it worse." Her wings rustle under the blanket, shimmering faintly through the knit. "They're not going to stop. The vandals, that is."

"Pretty -- pretty explicitly. I mean, there's been a lotta ugly stuff up there before but." Jax swallows, takes another drink from his mug. "... I don't know how busy y'all are gonna be here the next few days, but I'd think it a kindness if people might think on spending their free time down that-a-ways. Their wifi is fast, be easy enough to get work done there too."

Isra gives a slow nod by way of reply, her tail swaying fast and faster behind her. "I, at least, do not have much work left to do, and what I do have I can do there as well as here. I expect Hive and Dusk probably can, as well, and I will let them know in any event." She peels one hand away from her coffee to rest on Jax's shoulder. "I doubt very much if they would dare to try anything, but if so, we'll see to it they fail."

Jax's head tips to the side, his cheek fiercely hot when it comes to press against Isra's hand. There's a very brief flicker in the light around him, but when he looks up it's with a quick small smile. "Thanks. Shane'd never ask, but -- on top'a /everything/ he don't hardly need --" He shakes his head quickly, sets his mug down after another gulp. "Anyway who knows. Maybe the next few days'll be warmer after all."
