Introduction

xxxxxA small-town, Irish country-boy kicked out into the world, Jack 'Helo' Messier is on a journey to understand who he is and what he can do.

Description

xxxxx5'10, red hair, blue eyes. Compact 'rugby' build (though on the short size for most lads his age in Ireland). Pale-skinned and freckled (prone to burning in the sun)

Reputation

xxxxxHelo is a new kid on the block and is yet to make a mark. But watch this space ...

History

xxxxxJack Messier was born to a strict (though moderately wealthy) Irish catholic family in County Donegal in Northern Ireland. He was the fourth of five boys to a mother who had little time for her children and a father who seemed to favour his first two sons and care little (or worse) for the younger. He went to a fairly good school, though academically he rarely came home with the best grades due to his increasingly disruptive behaviour which started when he was around ten years old, and got increasingly worse as he entered into his teens. He was mostly a truant, though other times he may be sent home for petty crimes of insolence (such as spreading graffiti and - more often - petty theft). This definitely brought attention from his parents who would administer harsh punishments each time, though it did not deter Jack.

Like all of his brothers (and pretty much every person in his small town), Jack played rugby. Unlike his brothers, however, Jack was a little slimmer and shorter than they and did not truly excel at the game. This brought harsh criticism from his father, who would often belittle Jack, resorting mostly to homophobic slurs as admonishment. Though Jack rarely reacted to this (mainly through fear of punishment), this constant reinforcement that being gay was something to be ashamed of had a deep impact on the teen, as he had begun to question his own sexuality. These feelings made him distant from others as he was always worried that someone might find out, so as he reached his mid-teens, he had no close friends (though was certainly not unpopular, due to his smart mouth - he could usually make people laugh).

The one person he was close to was his grandmother, who affectionately referred to him as 'Helo'. This was because, as she would say, his "mouth ran quicker than helicopter blades". Often, she was his biggest defence against the bullying from his father (and even older brothers) and from her he got his love of astronomy (a subject she was fascinated with and even had a proper telescope) and general curiosity.

Jack began to manifest his mutant abilities around the time he was 16, though there had been small occurrences before than where objects around him seemed to move without he or anyone else touching them. At first he tried to ignore them, and indeed it was not easy for him to be able to use his telekinesis. His fear of what his parents (and almost everyone else he knew) would do if they found out ran deep within him, as mutants were always talked of in fear (or even revulsion) by the small, religious community.

He would eventually be able to move small objects somewhat freely (which was lucky for him as a petty thief, as the most valuable things were often the smallest things), but the first time he got a glimpse of what could be possible came during the worst day of life when his grandmother died suddenly of a heart attack. Upon hearing the news as it was told to he and his brothers by his father, Jack broke down, completely distraught. True to form, his father began to mock Jack for his tears, shouting at him to "be a man", when Jack, overcome with despairing anger, screamed back at his dad, who was thrown from his feet and backwards, smashing into a wall and breaking his back - though Jack had not even touched him.

His father survived, though his ability to walk was greatly hindered afterwards. Within a week (and without warning), Jack was told he was being sent to New York - apparently, just before she had died, his grandmother had contacted 'Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters' and asked for help. Jack (who rarely answered to that name, anymore - preferring to be called 'Helo') never found out how much she had known or suspected about what he was, but it had been enough for her to make the call and even pay for him to go. Helo left town and family with no small sense of regret, though he was still grieving for his grandmother. This grief had left a tinge to his otherwise affable nature, which could manifest as brief, rare flashes of anger - something he was afraid of feeling after what he had done to his father

Powers

xxxxxHelo has the mutant ability of telekinesis. As he is still young and has never had much chance to truly test this power, he is limited to what he can achieve with it. Moving larger objects (let's say a regular-sized person) is easier than moving very small objects (like a penny). This is because it takes greater control and finesse to do the latter, while the former is more "big target; hit it".

So far, he has never used his abilities offensively (the situation with his father is still something he is working out), though he has managed to deflect a rock thrown at him in the week after his grandmother's death and when the whole town turned on him. This suggests that Helo might be capable of creating a telekinetic field or barrier to protect himself from incoming projectiles; though apart from the rock, exactly what he can defend himself is yet unclear.

Using his powers for anything longer than a minute or so tends to lead to him feeling physically and mentally drained very quickly. This may improve with time and training, but even lifting a pen from a desk and holding it for two minutes leaves him perspiring and sleepy.

The range of his ability tends to be short. He can interact with these things much better if he is closer to them, and the further away something is, the weaker his ability to be able to manipulate it. Thus far, Helo does not yet understand the implications of having this particular ability, and it is uncertain what may arise from having this power. He will have to rely heavily on training and honing his skills to even find out what other applications such an ability might have
