Phones

The phone rings. Or buzzes. Or plays music! What really happens is that Hive's phone starts notifying Hive that Melinda is calling. One could almost say it is a persistent call. It just keeps notifying, more so than her normal text.

Hive -- doesn't actually answer the phone, when it notifies him that someone is calling. It's very possible that he's forgotten that this is a thing phones /do/ or how to /deal/ with it, because shortly after it /stops/ ringing a text comes back to Melinda:

  • (Hive --> Melinda): WTF was that.
  • (Hive --> Melinda): My phone was just freaking the fuck out.
  • (Melinda --> Hive): that was me calling you. Is your phone broken? Anyway. fine. text. the safehouse got a call from Ion.
  • (Melinda --> Hive): You know about Ion and Dusk? I assume you know all too much. Apologies.

After this there's silence, for a minute. And then Melinda's phone starts ringing.

Melinda exhales as the phone starts ringing after her last text. She slides her thumb across the answer button and places the phone to her ear. "Hey."

"Jesus, a call? Where is he? S'still alive, thank fucking God." There's a definite edge to Hive's voice before he repeats: "Where is he?"

"Apparently in lockup in Knoxville, Tennessee." Melinda shakes her head, sounding exhausted and stressed as well. "He said he left Dusk in a Chuck E. Cheese. So that narrows it down to just five hundred and seventy seven locations, if a person can believe wikipedia. Granted, that's just currently open locations. There could be more."

"He -- what." Now Hive just sounds flatly puzzled. "/In/ a -- /what/." Puzzled soon turns to grim, though. "Chuck E. Cheese is doing some /creepy fucking shit/ since the last time we took Spence there."

"I ... maybe. I don't know everything. Ion was speaking Spanish and pressed for time. Kay and I talked about it after, but ... I don't know if Ion got Dusk out or if that is where they were taken together. Ion's in jail for showing up in some redneck's house uninvited. I don't think anyone's worried about him." Melinda explains in an awkward rush.

"He didn't get Dusk out." Hive is quiet, now, heavier. "Micah --" This trails off. "Micah --" he starts again, but once more flounders. "There's a church," he finally says. "Where these people have been -- Micah saw him. Kind of -- a little."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" Hormonal Mel is not exactly patient right now. "What happened to Micah? Is Micah all right? He saw Dusk? Where?"

"Micah's -- fine." The words sound like a struggle for Hive; it takes him a while to continue after this, so impatient-Melinda will have to wait. "Went to their church. To pretend -- like he wanted. To join. They --" Another long pause. "They --" Paaaause. He exhales sharp and frustrated. "It's like they're some fucking. Cult of -- they take mutants. Take our abilities. Take our -- /bodies/. Fuck." The slow grind of his teeth is audible. "Was some blind girl. They /gave/ her Dusk's /eyes/."

There is silence on the other end. It takes Mel a moment to remember to breathe, and when she does, it catches in her throat with stifled pain. There's a sniffle and a grunt and a clearing of her throat as she tries to regain some modicum of control. "Okay."

"Micah's going back -- tonight. They invited him to -- to dinner, they." Hive's words stumble off into silence again. "We're. Probably just going to have to. See what he learns." His teeth grind again. "And hope they don't kill him."

All Melinda can manage to do is nod, initially. As that is unhelpful on the phone, she lets out a strangled 'Okay,' then a muffled 'ohgodimgoingto be sick' apology. The phone is abandoned and a door slams soon after, more accidentally than anything. Silence follows.

On Hive's end there's just another slow grind of teeth, before the phone clicks off and the line goes dead.

About thirty minutes later, there is a text.

  • (Melinda --> Hive): talking is not working now. When do you all go after him?
  • (Hive --> Melinda): Who knows. Have to know where he is first.
  • (Melinda --> Hive): Where is this church located? Maybe people here can search near by Chuck E's at the same time.
  • (Hive --> Melinda): < texts an address in the southwest bronx >
  • (Hive --> Melinda): Who the fuck is creepy enough to cut people's eyes out in a Chuck E Cheese, that isn't right.
  • (Melinda --> Hive): I can't ... get my head around anything right now. Have told the others. Warn Micah. Don't know what they will do.
  • (Hive --> Melinda): Don't know, either. Guess we just have to wait and see.
