Mmm Coffee

Dramatis Personae

Morgan Brandt, Corey

In Absentia

2013-06-10

Random meet up at the coffee shop, and catching up on recent things.

Location

<NYC> Evolve Cafe - Lower East Side

Tucked down an alley, this out of the way coffeeshop is easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for. Unassuming from the outside, its inside makes up for it -- spacious, with abundant seating and plenty of plush couches and cosy armchairs along the room's edges. The coffee is good, the prices are cheap, and there is a definitive alternative vibe to the room, from the music they play to the art that hangs on the walls. The real draw to this place, though, stems from its client base -- one of the very few businesses in the city that is welcoming to mutants, Evolve has become widely popular as a hangout with that crowd, and it is quite common to see them among clientele and employees both. At night, the thump of music can be heard from above, coming from the adjoining nightclub of the same name that sits over the coffeehouse.

It is a busy night at Evolve, most tables packed with people who are avoiding the perils of the outside world, and commiserating with those who are having a bad day. There are a few in various states of injury, and plenty more just giving off an air of nervousness. Most tables are packed with people who know each other, but it seems one is left mostly empty, though the chairs have been taken away one by one until only one other chair remains sititng across from the blond man in the chair. Corey feels somewhat out of place, not having been part of the community, but he has a paper in front of him and he seems to be reading. It shows the headlines of the horror stories that have occured in the past days, also the same things being spoken of by those around.

There is no cocky strut tonight, no helmet in sight. Morgan's hair is pulled back in a boring, utilitarian ponytail, her scrubs wrinkled and sorely worse for wear. She walks in, her exhaustion clinging around her like a cloak, as she orders a highly caffienated coffee and a sugary muffin thing. She needs fuel, and then sleep. She's walking a fine line already, turning and looking for a place to sit. Her eyes hit and sit on Corey for a long moment before it clicks in her head. One foot in front of the other, before she helps herself to that chair. "Hey there. Meant to call, just been working."

Looking up from the paper, a smile crosses Corey's lips as he sees her, tired as she may be. "Its alright, I knew you were an EMT. I figured you were either busy, or tired of me already." Inclining his head, he pushes the chair out for her to be able to sit. "And with how the world is right now, you probably see your own bed less often than you see a coffee shop." He raises his own cup in salute to her, still with a smile. "I'm glad to see you anyway." "I'm not even sure I /have/ a bed anymore. IT might have run away from being lonely." Morgan jokes weakly, sipping at coffee. She's running on empty, the very last of her energy reserves. "I had to stop here for coffee and something to eat...I haven't been shopping since stuff started going sideways, and I'd taken a few days off to go see my folks upstate before that, so there is like /no food/ in my place. Except maybe some microwave popcorn and stale crackers."

"I'd offer to take you to dinner, but I'm afraid you'd fall asleep in your food at this point. Maybe grab some take out on the way home either way." Corey holds out a hand to her across the table, trying to be comforting. "Though, apparently I've got some opportune and unfortunately timed news myself." Shaking his head as he crumples the news paper. "I apparently heal people who are around me, so theres that at least."

There's a faint smile. "I'm going to order delivery when I wake up. ...If anyone will deliver." Morgan says with a hint of bitterness. She takes his hand, knowing how his energy radiates, knowing she can take advantage without really hurting him. "I figured something like that." She says, apparently unsurprised. "Your energy levels are insane. You're probably amazingly healthy all the time. " There's a twitch of something that might have been a smile on any other day. "I heal people. Not just with my paramedic tools and training, either. "

"Wait, you knew? And you can?" Corey blinks, then sighs and shakes his head. "Somewhat funny everyone else seemed to know but me." Chuckling softly, he squeezes her hand when she takes it, but nods at her question. "No sick days for me, hearts good, cholesterol's fine, and all the other tests. Apparently I'm just dense as a box of rocks." Taking a sip of his coffee to get a break from his own thoughts, he looks back to her. "I bet its useful that you can do so, but I guess with the current climat you probably have to be subtle."

"Your energy? I can see it. Even use it, control it some. Well, anyone's chi, really." Morgan says, picking at her muffin with her other hand. "So I'm not most everyone." There's a piece torn off, popped in her mouth, as green eyes look at him. "I'm always subtle. I can do it instantly, or anything. I can jumpstart the healing process, tell what's wrong, blah blah blah."

"There were others who knew. Its why I went and got tested, just apparently my timing was poor. Guess I should have followed doctors orders." Shaking his head, Corey just watches her, some small comfort coming to him from the presence of a friend. "Well I'm sure you'd prefer talking about things other than work. Like perhaps how nice sleep is? And how good coffee tastes," he says with a wink.

"I am not sure I should talk about sleep. It's a fantasy of mine, right now." Morgan manages, even a wink along with the comment. "Coffee, on the other hand, good coffee, is worth the weight in gold, right now." There's a glance at her cup, before she's picking it up for a long swallow. "Well, you're not an obvious choice, any more than I am. Just keep quiet and keep your head down."

"Oh, I can't say that I mind you speaking about a fantasy," Corey grins back at her wink. "Maybe you can get one of those fancy espresso pod machines installed in the ambulance. Then you can have coffee whenever you need it, outside of the risk of burning patients with a cuppa joe." Nodding a little at her recommendation, he seems in thought. "Probably for the best, though I do feel some small obligation to help. But I'll try not to get too involved directly, I don't think I want to experience tasers or bullets more directly."

Morgan snorts. "You've never seen my partner drive." She remarks with a full load of sarcasm. "There would be no safe coffee." But she sets her cup aside to eat more of her muffin, his energy starting to help her build her own back up. "Just do it quietly. Be around them when it's safe, and don't /tell/ people."

"Gyroscopes? They install them in satellites, I'm sure they can keep your coffee stable," Corey replies as he uncrumples the paper, folding it back up more nicely. "I'll see what I can do, its not really of any use in an emergency situation anyway. The testing we did makes it more like a hospital stay than emergency medicine. Maybe I'll just volunteer as a receptionist at the clinic, thats about how far my medical knowledge extends anyway." Finishing off his own coffee, he pushes it away. "And maybe when the worlds calmed down, I can take you out to dinner. A friend of mine suggested a few restaurants around, that wouldn't involve plastic utensils and paper wrapped food stuffs."

"I don't really know how those work" Morgan admits, polishing off her muffin. "No, I get it. Just offer them help, casual by-stander like. See if you can stick with them long enough to help. Call me, if you have to." She shrugs, lifting her coffee for a long swallow, before she's watching him with wary green eyes. "I'd like that."

"No pressure or anything. I just wanted to give the offer now, even if it may not happen in the foreseeable future." Corey gives a slight shrug at that. "If you don't have time for food and sleep, fancy dinners aren't even in the category. So, whenever you do have time again, we'll see how it goes." He gives her another warm smile at that, running a hand along the side of his head to push a hair back. "And I shouldn't keep you from food and sleep for too long. I don't know how much benefit I give off really."

"I wasn't feeling pressured." Morgan tries to reassure. "I'm hoping it'll start to settle down sooner, rather than later. Only so much overtime I can do before even I stop functioning right." She finishes off her coffee, before she's moving to rise. "You gave me a little boost, don't worry." She shifts around the edge of the table, a brush of a kiss to his cheek. "Night, Corey."

Smiling at the little kiss, Corey inclines his head to her. "If you ever think I can help, just let me know. And I'll keep my nose clean in the meanwhile." Raising up from the seat himself, he puts the folded up news paper into a pocket. "I probably should get ready to hit the bed myself. Morning shifts are slightly more peaceful, but its been rough everywhere of late." Sighing he glances around to the huddled and talking masses, then back to her. "Keep yourself safe if you can."

"My job is rarely safe. But I'll try." There's a smile as she heads for the door. "See you 'round, sunshine."

Giving her a wave, Corey heads out himself out on his own path home.
