Kaine and Jack

In Absentia

2015-07-24

Lurking on the bottom of the lake, Kaine decides to surprise a lounging Jack.

Location

<XS> Lake

Bright, bright, bright; the lake glitters wide and expansive here, stretching off into the distance. Sunlight, moonlight, starlight, it catches them all. Lapping at the rocky shore, its deep waters are frigid in winter and cool even in summer. A stone pier stretches out a ways into the water, wide and smooth, though often icy in winter.

The water teems with life nevertheless, home to myriad species of fish that provide for ample fishing or just lazy watching on a slow summer day, for those who want to take a boat from the boathouse out to the center of the lake, or perhaps lounge on the pier and try their luck.

It's a nice, warm Friday and some students have taken to the lake for summer fun and escaping the heat. Sure it isn't as oppressively hot as it was last week but any excuse to have some fun and enjoy the water. Among those students, floating a little away from others, is...a pair of board shorts just floating in the water. Of course there's a vague humanoid shape occasionally visible to those with sharp eyes. That's Jack. He's floating...unaware of anything or anyone that might be lurking below the surface of the water.

And lurking below the surface is exactly what Kaine's doing, in his entirely too small swim shorts. He almost misses Jack, but once he spots him for sure he brushes by his legs very quickly, before launching six or so feet out of the water, and landing a massive cannonball that soaks the invisible teen and anybody unlucky enough to be near them.

Off in thought, Jack's pretty startled by something suddenly brushing him and lets out a yelp. He ends up dunked a moment and resurfances just in time to get soaked by the splash. "The heck?!" he asks, looking around for the source of the aquatic assault. "Kaine?"

Kaine pops out from under the lake and flashes a roguish grin, "You called?" He shifts over to float on his back now. "This heat is killing me."

Jack stares for a moment, water dripping down him giving him a ghostly appearance. "Allow me to help you cool off then," he replies, splashing his friend.

Kaine returns upright, spitting out a bit of excess water. "Do you really want to start a war?" he asks playfully, brow arching upwards. "Because you're in my element now, mi amico." He mimics splashing towards Jack and the water rises up to make it happen, just in a much larger quantity.

Jack sputters a bit when splashed and ends up laughing. "Hey, I thought ice was your element," he jokes, concentrating. He uses his TK to splash Kaine from behind, just playing around and goofing off with a friend.

"Totally is, but I can work with water too." Kaine lifts his hand up with some concentration and droplets begin to rise around Jack, which he promptly turns to snow. "Which means that I might just be the scariest person in the lake right now." he jokes.

Jack glances warily at the water droplets. And when they turn to snow, he ducks underwater. He pops back up a litle bit away and laughs. "Maybe, I can be pretty scary in here too."

"Only because we can't see you." Kaine teases. "Anyway, got any plans for today?"

Jack flicks a little bit of water at Kaine when teased but shakes it off. When asked about plans, Jack lets out a breath. "I...think I'm going to head into the city later today," he says. "Wanna come with?"

"Sure, haven't been doing much other than this." Kaine says with a nod. "Been inside entirely too long."

Jack nods. "Got a club I think...you might like," he says. "Haven't gone out in search of more...piercings?" he asks, a slight shiver racing up his spine.

"None just yet. Always on the list though." Kaine says, perking up a bit when what Jack says really kicks in. "I might like?" Jack frowns a little and moves closer. "Probably...not a good place to get specific about it but when we're on the way into town I'll tell ya more," he says. "But...you did say you were hoping you could learn more than just self defense, right?"

Kaine nods. "I gotcha. And yeah, I was." He floats onto his back once more, "Sounds like a plan."

Jack copies that pose, floating on his back too. "Great," he replies. "Figure if I'm going tonight for sure, I can invite a friend," he shrugs. "So what were you doing underwater?"

"Just hanging out, cooler down there. Downside to my mutation is once it gets about eighty out I'm done for. It's ridiculous." Kaine explains. "Spent a lot of time out here, and I don't have to cover my gills like I do in the pool."

Jack nods, water moving with the motion even if his head isn't visible. "Yeah...the pool chemicals have gotta suck" he murmurs. "Doesn't it get boring down there though?"

"Not really." Kaine replies with as much of a shrug as he can manage. "Definitely better than locking myself up in the dorm. Much more comfortable."

Jack blinks a few times. "What do you do down there to pass the time?" he asks, curious. "I get not wanting to be cooped up though. Probably go nuts if I had to stay in while it was this nice out."

"Honestly? Sleep sometimes." Kaine admits. "Or swim around and fuck with people that aren't expecting it. Probably the best thing ever."

Jack pauses and then laughs a bit. "Dude...what have you been doing?" he asks. "Surprise cannonballing them too?"

Kaine laughs a bit too. "Sometimes. Best part is when couples come out here thinking they're alone. Nothing matches the actual terror when one of them gets drug under."

Jack laughs again, shaking his head. "Dude...that's cold, messing with a little private time like that," he pauses a beat. "Wait, you don't catch people out here skinny dipping or anything, do you?" he asks, flashing back to a conversation he had the other day with one of the new girls.

"Almost did once." Kaine perks up a bit. "Why, people do that more than I'm aware?"

Jack snickers a little. "I don't know," he admits. "Just...met someone new to the school the other day that wondered why I didn't just...streak everywhere in this heat. So its been on my mind."

"Oh, haven't seen the new people yet. Should get around to being more sociable." Kaine muses. "Or. Or I could stay out here, then burn that bridge when I get to it."

"Isn't it cross the bridge, not burn it?" Jack asks. He shrugs though. "Two new girls and one walking mountain of a guy I met so far," he says. "I think they all only got here recently."

"Yeah, supposed to be cross." Kaine acknowledges. "Alright, I might have to show up and show out just a little bit. Gonna have to leave these shorts in the dorm though."

Jack looks over at Kaine. "You're...planning to meet them naked?" he asks, hoping he just misheard.

Kaine just kind of looks at Jack. "Er, no. Should I?"

Jack pauses. "No...it just sounded..." he shakes his head. "Nevermind," he mutters. "But yeah...meet the new people. Liv...Lulu and uh," he frowns, pausing as he tries to remember the name. "I think it was Treak. I was on my way out and Shane was pissed at the guy."

"I'll definitely have to try to run into them." Kaine dips back under the water for a few moments before popping back up again. "What're they like?"

"Liv's alright. She does plant stuff...seemed perky," Jack replies. "Treak...was kind of quiet. Didn't say a lot. And Lulu's alright. She's the one that was wondering why I don't just sneak around invisible and peep on people."

"Alright, kind of freaky then. Probably not in the good way, but only one way to find out." Kaine waggles his eyebrows a bit. "Thinking about getting my eyebrow pierced, actually. Because why not?"

Jack rolls his eyes a little but smiles, not that anyone can see. "She might like the obvious mutation. Seemed to like mine...no idea what she does though," he says. "Planning on asking her out or something?" he asks. Of course he predictably winces at the mention of a new piercing. "Because it would hurt?"

"All things that are worth it in the end hurt. And probably not gonna ask her out, but I do like checking in on people." Kaine rolls over, floating on his face while he waits for Jack to reply.

Jack quirks an unseen brow as Kaine floats face down, righting himself. "I'll...leave piercings and tattoos and stuff to you still," he says.

Kaine picks his face up, "Yeah, especially since the only thing that would show up is piercings. And that'd be dangerous as fuck, since they couldn't see what was happening."

Jack shudders again. "Dude..." he trails off, squirming a bit. "Needles freak me out," he mutters. "Would ruin when I'm trying to sneak around too," he adds. "I mean...shiny floating metal would give me away really quick."

"That it would, another reason to not do it. But, I don't really have a reason. Finding work is already going to be a pain since I'm a real obvious mutant. But.. C'est la vie." Kaine replies. "Just how shit works sometimes."

Jack frowns, letting out a breath. "Yeah..." he trails off. "Might be able to get a job at Evolve or the clinic while you look for something else...when graduation comes and all that," he sayd. "Still thinking of doing the mechanic thing?"

"Yeah, what I'm good at." Kaine acknowledges with a slight nod. "Don't have to do as much work towards getting ready for it. The problem is finding a shop that isn't bigoted."

"Have you asked your advisor?" Jack asks. "I mean that's the sort of thing the school's supposed to help with, right?" he asks. "I'll start keeping an eye out though."

"Haven't yet, figure I'll wait until it's almost that time to figure out what I'm gonna do." Kaine shrugs once more, attention turning skyward. "I mean, I have another year to deal with it. Figure I'll burn that bridge when I get to it."

Jack splashes Kaine lightly. "Dude...gotta stop burning bridges. Need those to get across things," he says, amused. Eventually, he stretches. "I should head back in and shower. Get ready to head down to the city."

"Alright, I'll be inside in a few." Kaine says with a nod, tapping out a salute.

Jack nods and flashes an unseen smile. "I'll meet you down in the front hall in like forty-five minutes then," he offers. "See ya," the invisible teen adds, swimming towards shore.
