Description

xxxxxThe clerestory of the old cathedral--and of the new annex--has been converted to an airy restaurant with stunning views in all directions, especially the iconic Manhattan skyline framed by the river, the Kennedy Bridge, and the plentiful green spaces of Astoria and Randall's Island. Like the rest of the hotel, it harmonizes neoclassical grandeur with sleek modern luxury, the plentiful greenery brightening the space clearly a part of the design from the very start and not in any way an afterthought.

xxxxxThe kitchen occupies the center of the cross, with multiple points of access to each wing for the staff's ease of access. The seating options range from small, intimate nooks to long tables with a dozen chairs, meticulously laid out to optimize lighting, views, and space for all patrons. A wide semicircular balcony has been added onto the western end, bracketed into a crescent by one curve of the bar's unusual mandorla shape. Set into the gable end above the bar is one of the building's original rose windows, lovingly restored and luminous from both within and without.

Notes & Trivia
  • This restaurant has fast become a darling of the NY Food Critic scene, who have been raving since its opening about both the exquisite menu and the whimsical atmosphere. Though some consider its pretensions impossibly twee, most rave that its preciousness does in fact make for a delightful night out.
  • It's a very pricey Night Out, though, whether ordering à la carte or getting the ten-course prix fixe tasting menu.
  • The menu changes frequently and seasonally, with a strong focus on local ingredients and playful presentation in the plating.
  • Whatever dishes rotate through, there is never any sesame used in the kitchen.
  • Though there is no dress code, there are strong dress suggestions -- their marketing claims "fanciful, not formal". Patrons are encouraged to have fun with their fancy dress and frequently arrive in lavish gala outfits, fancy-dress costumes and the like. It has turned into a bit of a social media game; the restaurant's growing community of fashionistas frequently vote on who has had the best/most interesting outfit of the night from those willing to submit their photograph (taken by the door with the complimentary flutes of champagne offered on arrival) to Instagram, and those who drum up enough excitement online get some of their very lavish meal comped.
  • There is a small room just outside the restaurant for those who show up looking Not Fancy but would like to look fancy -- it has a small range of fripperies that patrons can borrow to dress up for the evening.
  • Patrons go home with their own goody bag for the evening; in addition to a small assortment of amenities from the hotel spa and a crystal-jarred scented candle with the hotel's bespoke signature fragrance, the chef also prepares their own unique "Midnight Snack" for later, tailored to preferences expressed through the meal.
