Sebastian's voicemail. Tuesday, 2 April. 17:17 "Hi, honey-honey. I'm -- today was a mess, I'm sorry. Look, I want to talk to you guys. Give me a call, aright?" --- Shane's voicemail. Tuesday, 2 April. 17:20 "Hi, honey-honey. Are you gonna stay with Bastian all week? Look, I'll talk to the Professor, y'all belong here more than -- more than -- more than that other place. I'm sorry everything's been crazy but we'll work it out, OK? I miss you." --- Sebastian's voicemail. Wednesday, 3 April. 10:51 A message is left, from Daiki's phone. Daiki speaks quiet, soft and calm. "Bastian. This is Daiki. They say you are suspended, I do not understand. I am keeping your homework for you. I am keeping Shane's, too, do not tell him this. I can deliver, if you give me an address." --- Sebastian's voicemail. Friday, 5 April. 16:05 "Hi, B! It's Flicker. I just wanted to check in, I know things've been crazy. But we miss you. I was just watching this TED talk about 3D printing and I think you'd be real --" (there is commotion in the background; Ian cursing at something, Dusk laughing; Flicker's next words are a little distant, not said into the phone) "Oh /man/ that was brutal -- I get the winner!" And then, back into the phone, "-- Anyway, you guys should come down. A week of suspension means /so much/ video games, right? Plus oh /man/ you gotta check out Hive's minecraft --" There's more noise in the background, and a bit of a laugh in Flicker's voice when he returns, "Oh, man, I gotta go murder Dusk. We miss you." This is echoed by a background /chorus/ of: "HI BASTIAN." "-- Dude get your ass over here." Also some squawking. "Horus misses you, too." --- Shane's voicemail. Saturday, 6 April. 17:43 Hive sounds a lot snippier on the phone than Flicker. "Dude, where the fuck are you guys." --- Shane's voicemail. Wednesday, 10 April. 9:20 Jackson sounds subdued. A little tense. A little fret-ty. "Hey... you guys should be back at school by now. What's up, honey? Where are you? If you --" He hesitates. "If you can't talk to me you can talk to Professor Wagner. We're worried." --- Sebastian's voicemail. Wednesday, 10 April. 9:23 "Hi, honey-honey. Are you OK? I'm real worried, can you -- let me know you're alright? Or let Dr. McCoy know or -- /someone/. We miss you." --- Shane's voicemail. Wednesday, 10 April, 10:51 "Hello, Shane. This is Daiki. The suspension is over. You can come back, now." --- Sebastian's voicemail. Wednesday, 10 April, 10:53 "Hello, Bastian. This is Daiki. Please return to classes. Do you need a ride, I can ask the teachers for you." --- Shane's voicemail. Friday, 12 April, 12:13 "Hello, Shane. This is Daiki. You are still not here, please return my call." Long pause. "Thank you." --- Sebastian's voicemail. Friday, 12 April, 12:14 "Hello, Bastian. This is Daiki. Are you two coming --" There is a long hesitation. "Please come back. I have been keeping your homework." --- Shane's voicemail. Saturday, 13 April, 11:17 This message comes from Daiki's phone. Daiki is quiet, as ever. "Shane. It is Daiki. It is Saturday. I would like to see you. I can come to the city. Please call me." --- Shane's voicemail. Monday, 15 April, 15:04 Hey Shane, it's Mel. You gotta try to call in when you don't show up. That's twice now. Are you okay? Look, I'm not giving you hell. I understand you're in a bad place and the new fosters might not let you call in, but please know I'm worried. Call when you can. --- Sebastian's voicemail. Monday, 15 April, 20:13 The number is an unfamiliar one, 718 area code. The voice that follows is definitely familiar, though. BRIGHT and chipper eager and it gives no introduction but starts off straightaway with: "BASTIAN Bastian guess what I heard I heard a KING was coming and there's a SCIENCE FAIR a science fair by a ROBOT KING that's like the BEST SCIENCE FAIR you HAVE to go OK we HAVE to go we can bring Jerusalem and show him and maybe he can be a ROBOT PRINCE and we can move to Vateria and be robot KNIGHTS OK well I guess I'll be a robot knight you can be a SHARK KNIGHT that's even better but OK you have to come and take me and Jerusalem and Shane TOO can we make a shark robot next so that it can swim with you maybe there's shark robots THERE at the science fair I BET they have shark robots actually but we're not gonna see them unless you come take me OK so let's go to --" (message cuts off.) --- Shane's voicemail. Tuesday, 16 April. 10:33 Tuesday morning, a voicemail is left on Shane's cellphone. The caller ID is Eric. Hey, Shane. It's Eric. Where'd you and 'Bastian go? Missed you at dinner tonight. (pauses, and quieter) Hey, listen. I just got out of a briefing - there's a missing persons alert out for you and Sebastian. What's going on? (another pause) Give me a call. Let me know if I can... (trails off). You know. Help. (hangs up) --- Sebastian's voicemail. Tuesday, 16 April, 12:12 "Bastian. It is Daiki. I would please like to know that you are alright, I have been," there's a hitch, a pause, "It is not the same. Here. Please come. I have read on slashdot that there is a large science exposition happening tomorrow. All week. I think I would like to go with you. They will have many exciting things." Another pause. "Please come." And another pause. Quieter, even, than Daiki's usual softness, "Your father misses you badly." --- Tuesday evening. 16 April. Just after adorable.
--- Shane's voicemail. Tuesday, 16 April, 20:19 There are several missed calls in a row, all from Daiki's phone. Only one message, though. It is nothing but thirty seconds of silence before it hangs up. Shane's voicemail. Saturday, 20 April, 19:10 From Mel's phone. Hey Shane. I sort of heard what's going on. Well, kind of piecing it together, anyway - something about a break up and a bee sting. Look, if you guys need time, that's okay. I'm going to put you on a leave of absence until you get back. Take care of each other, okay? Call me when you can. Lots of people are worried sick. Guess I'm one of them. |
