History

xxxxxAs far as the public eye is concerned, Victor van Doom – or Doctor Doom as he has introduced himself – didn’t begin to exist until the late 2012 uprising in Latveria. The autonomous Hungarian-governed region was victim to ceaseless unrest as the state tumbled down into poverty and disarray, while the rebels wreaked havoc aimlessly. The war was going nowhere until Doctor Doom appeared and gathered the resistance together. Shortly afterwards, the rebels soundly defeated the Hungarian force and reclaimed Latveria’s long-lost freedom. The people were so enamoured with their saviour, the entire region shook with the desire to see him as the one to lead the nation, at least for the time being. So far, he is yet to make a decision that will change their minds.

xxxxxLatveria was once a free region home to gypsy tribes that tentatively banded together before the Ottoman Empire expanded into the Balkans. Latveria became part of Ottoman Hungary, and afterwards failed to escape the grasp of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Even after Hungary lost most of its power and territory after World War I, Latveria remained leashed, even if papers claimed it was to be autonomous. Unfortunately, the region had no real leader figures to distinguish it as a proper state. Hungary was happy to exploit Latveria’s rich natural resources, such as plentiful deposits of iron, silver, oil and titanium. However, five centuries of abuse seems to have come to an end as Doctor Doom has successfully claimed the land. His goals that he has just barely elaborated upon landed him in the United States.

Powers

xxxxxOne of the first and most frequently asked questions Doom has faced abroad was whether he was a mutant. He has exhibited no extraordinary powers beyond extreme survivability. It's hard to tell exactly what lies beneath that perpetually scowling mask, but it's no doubt that armour is greatly enhancing his capabilities. It is highly complicated and yet elegantly simple. It is reinforced steel with the built-in capacity to absorb moderately strong shock. Therefore, Doctor Doom can completely shrug off low calibre gunshots. A tank shell to the chest would severely dent his armour and fracture a rib or two, but he would still survive. The same shell to the head would more than likely decapitate him. Shock absorption also means he can land from great heights unharmed. Should he be harmed to the point of immobility, his armour is independently locomotive, meaning that even if both of Victor’s legs are broken, the armour will still make sure he can walk, albeit painfully. If he is unconscious for more than twenty seconds, the AI coded into the armour is turned on, programmed to bring him back to a designated safe spot if possible.

xxxxxGiven his resistance to shock and punishment, the armour is also fairly resistant to pressure. Furthermore, there are small emergency reserves of water, air and liquid nutrients stored within, allowing Victor to temporarily survive in extreme environments. There are few offensive capabilities – strength and endurance are increased, allowing Doom to punch through concrete and sufficiently thin steel (so no punching into bank vaults). He can also discharge potentially lethal amounts of electricity by touch; Victor can control the specific voltage dispensed. This nigh impenetrable fortress costs Victor his dexterity; for example, he cannot sprint, only jog. Doom would also be matched by those with superhuman strength, and forcefields would render him harmless. It is extremely unlikely Doctor Doom will be the centrepiece of his own plot, so evasive manoeuvers could lead to the core of the issue. A simplistic example: Doom is guarding a switch. A stealthy character could flip the switch and destroy the console before Doom could do anything about it. And who knows how that armour of his is powered...

xxxxxArguably, the true offensive capability of Doctor Doom lies not in his armour, but in his inventions. During his reclamation of Latveria, he would manage to set distant targets ablaze, as though he had clever explosives that carved their own path to their destination. Intelligence gathering suggested either exceptional spies or superior technology. Doctor Doom does not freely talk about his inventions, but perhaps that in itself should be reason for concern, considering the man has reclaimed an entire country by force.

Connections

Peasants

  • Peter - a young kid at a mere glance, but Doom does not do glances. He has been committed to Victor's memory, AKA shitlist.
  • Kisha - another mutant from Xavier's School. Bold and arrogant. Doom respects these traits, unless they are not lived up to.
  • Everyone else until proven otherwise.

Autograph, please? - Are a you a journalist? A fan of his? You may want to bother Doctor Doom, but don't expect him to be overly cooperative, especially if you're a journalist. If there's one thing he respects even less than a mutant, it's a guy with a microphone in his hand. Like mutants, however, he's not above using them.
Technology - Victor van Doom possesses one of the brightest minds in his generation. He is not overly humble about it, either. Perhaps you are drawn to him because of his technological inclination? Perhaps you disapprove of his works, or perhaps you actually want to support him.
Investment - Whether you are interested in the future development of Latveria as a politician or a businessman, it's only reasonable to assume that helping Doom will warrant a return favour of some kind. Victor is actively seeking this at the moment.
Stories - Doctor Doom is not a social butterfly. Due to his background, abilities and demeanour, he's more of a scowling plot dispenser. Be it something manipulative and villainous or something on the lower end of the scale, I can introduce a little bit of doom to those who desire it. Whether you want to be his henchman or nag him as a journalist, I'm up for discussing any arc.
