xxxxxHowl cuts a somewhat striking figure at 6'5" in height, and that's without taking the physical mutation into account. He's on the skinny side, which tends to create the illusion(, Michael) that he's even taller. His blond hair is kept cut short and a bit uneven, as if trimmed by unskilled hands, and tends to have a few days of stubble on his chin. Other than that on his head, the rest of his body hair is more like fur, in a thin layer of arctic white.
xxxxxHis ears are not exactly standard, either; in point of fact, his protrude out and are rather unmistakably vulpine. They, too, are covered in white fur, tipped black at the ends, and stick out a good four inches from the sides of his head. His teeth, as well, are clearly foxlike; canines are all but impossible to conceal when he opens his mouth, and the rest are sharper than usual as well. Hands are tipped with clawlike fingernails, and presumably his toes follow the same pattern.
xxxxxAlso, he has nine big fluffy white tails, each with a touch of black at the tips, that just touch the ground when relaxed, and he speaks with a heavy Welsh accent.

xxxxxHowl's parents wanted to love him, but ultimately they really weren't sure what to do with their vulpine child, especially coming from a farming background in rural Wales. The whole situation was entirely out of their experience and, out of some sense of self-preservation, after his birth (at home, conveniently enough), they managed to have him listed as having been born dead. Morbid, but it kept him out of the system, and kept them from having to admit that they'd produced such a monster.
xxxxxAnd so, with the child concealed, they proceeded to raise him in secret as rather more of a pet than as a son. In the interest of encouraging him to go out on his own (and thus both expose their crime and, more importantly, bring shame on the family) he was raised to believe that the planet is rather smaller than it actually is, with significantly fewer people living on it; furthermore, he's simultaneously under the impression that he's the only person with any sort of physical mutation, and that everyone has 'unusual' abilities - they just don't use them in public. This deception essentially served to make him disinclined to leave home, both for fear that he'd be taken away and studied due to his physical differences, and because there 'isn't anywhere to go anyway'. He spent the majority of his childhood in a shed built into the side of the house, where he could hide on the rare occasions his parents had visitors, but was generally allowed inside for family dinners. He does have some table manners, even though it was generally expected that because he looked like an animal, he'd also behave like one.
xxxxxThe sum total of his education, growing up, came from TV programs recorded by his parents and screened for appropriateness (both in terms of content and in terms of making sure it wouldn't contradict the idea of Earth being small; science fiction was thus a popular genre), and fictional stories and novels that met the same criteria. Aside from basic maths and a few assorted topics, he has basically no formal education, and sometimes has trouble differentiating between TV and reality. Usually he realizes that TV is fake - and he figures that so many stories are created about space travel because naturally people would want to leave a planet with nothing going on - but he still tends to equate real life situations with television tropes and plots. He's basically got the mentality of a child playing at being a grownup.

xxxxxHywel's mutation has manifested itself in two ways. First, and most obviously, is his physical mutation; he was born with all of the most prevalent features of a fox. For the most part he appears human, but his ears, teeth, body hair, claws and, yes, tails (plural!) are far more vulpine than simian in nature. He was in fact born with nine tails, in a clear resemblance to kitsune of Japanese folklore; however, the similarity is purely superficial.
xxxxxIn addition to this there have been some minor, less visible changes to his physiology; his stomach is able to digest unpleasant organisms more efficiently, allowing him to regularly consume raw meat, should he so choose. Likewise, his jaws and teeth are about twice as strong as a strong human's, enabling him to easily bite through all but the thickest of animal bones.
xxxxxIn addition to the physical mutation, however, Hywel also has the power of hydrokinesis; the ability to manipulate water. He can essentially make water take any simple form he wishes, though once he amasses anything larger than the size of a small car and he starts having difficulty maintaining its form; there will be dripping. He is also able to control the movement of water, creating small whirlpools or even altering the density to allow himself to walk across it, if he so chooses; the volume limitation applies here, though, as well.
xxxxxWhile Hywel is not able to create water from nothing, he is able to use water from any source; it's particularly handy when drying off after a shower, and he'd make a good dehumidifier. However, he isn't able to use any source of water that has been extensively blended with other ingredients; trace minerals are of no concern, and he is able to manipulate simple solutions such as coffee, tea, urine or anything else similarly water-heavy, but he is not able to perform blood- or sodakinesis (essentially, any water with a significant amount of things other than trace minerals is water he can't manipulate).
