Description

xxxxxA dingy waiting room with a line of rickety chairs, a small glass table with a set of permanently out-of-date magazines, a set of plastic holding racks with a number of informational pamphlets about STIs and partner abuse. This place is not, to be sure, the most cheerful on earth, but for many of its clientele it is the best they have. The Common Ground Clinic's staff provides free and low-cost medical care on a sliding scale to many of Manhattan's poorest residents, without checking for insurance, immigration status or many other things that bar entry for many of them to traditional medical care. There is counselling available, too, and once a week social workers to help people find resources for getting on their feet. The wait times are long, but the volunteer staff here is dedicated (if always overworked.)

Volunteers
Notes & Trivia

xxxxx

  • 100% volunteer-run, Common Ground subsists largely on donations and intermittently on the hefty bank account of their founder Dr. Toure.
  • Has a strong focus on underserved populations; youth, queer people, sex workers, undocumented immigrants, homeless people. Until recently was known as a safe place for mutants to go for treatment, though recent hostilities in the city have made them far more hesitant about treating mutants.
  • In addition to medical care, Common Ground has drop-in hours every weekday afternoon for people who need a place to take a shower and even pick up a clean change of clothes.
  • As well, they have social workers available one evening a week to help with a wide range of things, from finding substance abuse treatment to medical insurance to finding housing and employment.
