xxxxxIn spring of 2013, mutants started disappearing in even greater numbers than usual, though the police paid this little mind. Mostly because they were the ones responsible, kidnapping mutants off the streets and forcing them into cages to fight each other, sometimes to the death. The police made quite a bit of money off of this, through admission sales and concessions and charging for access to the livestream of the fights; it seemed like a great racket until they were caught.
xxxxxThe rescue and escape was all pulled off quite quietly and without any fatalities. Some time afterwards, however, video footage of the fights was obtained and released to the press, the fight ring exposed during a press conference with Tony Stark. The exposure of the fight ring together with the highly publicized killing of an NYPD Sergeant (who had been organizing the fights) by a mutant (who had been captured and forced to participate in them) caused an extremely tense summer between mutants and police in New York.
