Introduction xxxxxOverview of your character goes here. Description xxxxxRoscoe is five-foot-four and fervently hoping for a growth spurt. This is particularly unfortunate combined with his sinewy build, which just refuses to bulk up despite his best efforts. He has straight black hair cropped short and not very stylishly, dimples when he smiles, and prominent front teeth. He was supposed to get his braces off like a year ago; he’s still waiting. Reputation xxxxxRoscoe’s just a kid; when he came to Prometheus he’d barely started the eighth grade. He’s neither very obedient nor very uncooperative with the guards, more cautious and compliant around researchers. With the other labrats he tends to be talkative, excitable, and frankly sort of clingy. xxxxxBack home, he was sort of a dweeb for twelve years before developing a mutation and going off the deep end. Most of his old friends think he got caught up in some kind of gang activity. They’re not exactly wrong. History xxxxxCould have gone to juvie and saved himself all this trouble, but he’s been told they would probably have gotten him in the end, anyway. Labrat since October 2021, Lassiter lab since February 2022. xxxxxRoscoe Vo, raised partly by his older sisters while his parents ran and maintained the laundromat they owned in downtown Boston, had a fairly average childhood until fifth grade, when he suddenly developed an ability to see through nearly anything. At once he began devising ways to cheat on tests and play with his phone in class, but his power proved more inconvenient than useful – there was the fact he couldn’t use it at will, and then the fact that everybody at his school immediately thought he was using it to perv on them. xxxxxThis came as a particular shock because Roscoe hadn’t told everybody at his school about it – just his sisters, their boyfriends, Sensei Dan at the dojo, the chess club faculty advisor, his girlfriend Melanie, the rest of the chess club, and… well, enough people that he should have expected the secret to get out. He fell out with his friends, suspecting them of gossiping behind his back, and also dumped chess, karate, AV, and Melanie. For a few months he was friendless and angry. He cut classes and got into fights; his parents considered pulling him out of school. The pandemic came at a good time for the Vo family – things seemed to resolve themselves with distance learning. xxxxxThough at first Roscoe was determined to be just bitter and angry and lonely about it, he got bored of that quickly and started networking online with other mutants, then sneaking out while his parents were working to meet up with Internet friends who also lived in New England. They were a little older than Roscoe, but they didn’t treat him like a dumb kid; they even encouraged him to practice and develop his ability, when at home, his parents hadn’t even addressed the x-ray vision thing except to forbid its use. Roscoe was eager for both community and understanding; he was comforted by his friends’ anger at the way mutants were misjudged and mistreated, and their desire to do something about it. They were just kids, so most of what they did was enact petty revenge schemes against other kids and adults that had treated them unfairly, but Roscoe wanted to be included all the same. xxxxxAt first they nicknamed him “Chess Club”, amused by his late-onset delinquency, but it wasn’t long before they allowed him to come along, though they only ever used him as a lookout despite his insistence that he knew karate. These outings increased in scope and frequency with Roscoe as recon, and they were still in the process of brainstorming new nicknames when one of their excursions went south. Everybody scattered but Roscoe, who had been keeping an eye out for cops on the other side of the building and was unaware of anything happening less than five hundred feet in front of him. He took the fall for a frankly impressive array of vandalism, petty larceny, arson, and property damage, and was given a hefty fine and juvenile hall sentence. He jumped at the chance to go to a mutant-specific detention facility in upstate New York, particularly when they offered to waive the fine if he did – his family was struggling to get by in gentrifying Chinatown. xxxxxThe expose on Prometheus’s labs wouldn’t make the news for months, but Roscoe understood quickly where he was and what was happening to him and the other mutants. It sucked, a lot, particularly when he was moved to a more secure facility in Ohio to prevent him trying to read everything in the filing cabinets in the office when he was bored – this crushed the last hope he’d been entertaining of breaking out and hitchhiking back to Boston. He’s now been there for over a year, though he doesn’t know exactly how long. Powers xxxxxX-ray vision, just like Superman but without the super stuff. xxxxxRoscoe describes his powers as “x-ray vision” but they have little to do with x-rays at all. His vision is exponentially sharper and more fine-tuned than the average human’s, which allows him to see through most solid objects by refocusing his eyes to ignore the particles of matter in the way. His range of vision is not much greater than average, but his visual acuity is something like 20/2. Applications: He went into Prometheus having already taught himself to see into the middle of closed books to cheat on tests (though it required either very quick skimming or very good guesswork to find a specific page) as well as how to read upside-down or backwards. He is also adept at quickly scanning an area for movement or specific item, but they have to be very obvious at a glance. It is probably possible for him to see invisible things like gasses, energy beams, and magnetic fields, but he hasn’t tried, and it would require some understanding of the physical properties in play. Limitations: Roscoe can’t see through very dense materials such as lead or gold (including vibranium and adamantium) and his vision through the dense materials he can see through, like iron and steel, is often smudgy and unclear. He has a tendency to miss what’s happening close-up or in his peripheral vision when he’s looking far away, particularly if he’s seeing through multiple walls at once. He can only see one “layer” at a time, as he puts it; once he gets past the surface nothing above registers. He does not have night or heat vision, but darkness is generally not an issue unless the surrounding material is very dense and there is no interior light. Physical properties: His eyes appear pretty normal, and their movements when focusing/unfocusing are no different than the average human’s, except that it happens in very small increments. When scanning quickly through something it often looks like his eyes are vibrating. He does not have a 360 degree range of eye motion, and cannot move his eyes independently of each other. He is less susceptible to eye strain for normal things (reading, looking at a computer screen, or driving for too long) but the eye strain for abnormal things (looking through walls and/or across long distances for too long) is fatiguing and painful, sometimes to a debilitating extent. Chess club – he’s not good at actually playing chess, but he does know a ton of terminology. Audiovisual tech support, services, troubleshooting, etc. learned mostly on the job at school assemblies.
