Introduction

xxxxxStrange dreams of the future begin to arrive...

History

xxxxx

A number of people begin experiencing vivid, unexplained dreams regarding themselves in the future. These dreams will continue, extending farther and farther into the future until some of these people are called upon to find out how -- and why -- it's happening.

This is a chance for players to project ideas of where they'll be in a few years into their RP without any actual consequence! Anyone who wants to be a part of the TP is welcome to join; all you have to do is play out a scene that takes place in the future and you're considered part of the TP. Risk of harm to your character is very low to non-existent for the first parts of this TP, but will increase significantly for the third part -- however, participation in the third part is completely optional, even if you took part in the first two parts.

As this TP involves time-travel, some important rules will be in effect for these scenes. If you're worried about breaking any of these rules, or are unsure about your ability to stay within the lines, feel free to contact me (Hive) to ask questions -- i'll also be available to 'monitor' your scenes (and play NPCs / our own characters, if need be!) to make sure you stay within the lines.

As events progress in the alternate future, this page will be updated with a timeline explaining what has been confirmed to have happened within that timeline so far. Please avoid any large-scale pronouncements in your scene (IE, having your scene refer to how registration was overturned by the Supreme Court) without at least speaking to me first. Below are some of the basic rules to remember when RPing out these scenes!

  • We are now in the third and final stage of the TP; dreams are occurring five years from the current date.
  • All MUSH-wide rules are still in effect, even in the alternate timeline. So no spontaneously acquiring Magneto's powerset in the future without speaking to staff, first!
  • The moment the dreams start, the timelines diverge; this is an alternate timeline, so these scenes represent *possible* futures for your characters -- not absolutes! These dreams may give your characters reason to change their ways, or change the future of others!
  • Remember, until you know for sure, any PC in the future might be dead / radically different! So don't refer to your good still-living friend Bill unless you know from a log (or Bill's player) that Bill is still alive and still your friend! NPCs are free game, though!
  • Characters wake up from these future dreams having seen and experienced everything their future-selves saw and experienced; nothing more, nothing less.
  • There are certain 'seeds' for future events we might ask people to include in their scenes. If you're interested, contact myself or Melinda and we'll supply you with one! They can be as simple as a television program in the background or a big news event your characters are responding to!
  • For all scenes that involve this TP (including just characters discussing the dreams!), please link to this page in the description and include the 'Future Past' category. For all scenes that actually take place in a dream (either in part or whole), please *also* include the 'Dream' category. Date-wise, use the real date you RP'd the scene on, but change the gamedate name to five years later.
  • Drastic changes in the present that directly contradict Future Dreams that have already happened are not just allowed but encouraged -- if concrete changes occur that will affect the future predictions directly, subsequent Future Dreams will take these changes into account.

I realize the above is a lot to keep in mind, but we really want to make this as simple as possible for you -- so don't hesitate to ask any of us any questions to help put together your scene! Thanks for reading, and remember to have fun with it!

Involved Characters (grouped according to where they ended up in the five-year future)
  • NYC
    • Ash - Having union/work troubles due to registration status one year in the future. Was in detainment five years in the future; has since been broken out.
    • B - Has been accepted by MIT! one year in the future. Brotherhooding about (clandestinely) 3-years-hence. Kind of a crazyface in the five year future, has army of robots and commandeered Sentinels. Crazying about with Lia.
    • Domino - Five years out is working for Stark as a bodyguard.
    • Dusk - Publicly a wanted BoM terrorist 1-3 years in the future. Helped orchestrate jailbreak of his detainment camp five years in the future.
    • Flicker - Bodyguarding for Hive and Strange and Maya. Sort of an ambassador to The Past in trying to recruit help to change the timeline.
    • Ghost - X-Man and college student studying Journalism one year in the future. Five years in the future, working with the Resistance peacefully.
    • Hive - Working with Strange and Maya, Flicker and Magneto to Change The World.
    • Iolaus - Working with the CDC to develop a virus that will suppress the mutations of all mutants it infects.
    • Isra - Helped orchestrate jailbreak of her detainment camp five years in the future.
    • Jim - Has gone tree. Like, completely, one year in the future.
    • Kay - Was in detainment five years in the future; has since been broken out.
    • Kisha - Five years out has her own roboDOOMsuit; has recently come into Stark's employ.
    • Lia - Sort of /is/ a (or legion of) crazyface murderbots in the future. With B. Fighting. And dancing.

    • Maya - Five years out, has joined Hive + Strange in sending dreams to the past.
    • Marrow - Has moved many of the Morlocks to Mexico five years in the future, where they have set up a small sanctuary; keep local law enforcement off their backs by helping fight against the drug cartels.
    • Micah - Preparing to open a physical office location and hire two new employees for Gorilla AT one year in the future, and also has written several articles on meeting the adaptive technology needs of people with special abilities. Three years in the future has: written a textbook to expand on the articles, started providing lectures and continuing education on the topic, and spearheaded the creation of a tentacle-like robotic upper limb replacement (with Flicker and Horus as the first to utilise them). Five Years In the Future: Micah was involved in the attack on Mendel Clinic and was very severely injured, primarily a plethora of burns and loss of his intact leg. Both lower extremities are now fully robotic. He escaped to the Underground and continues working with the Resistance.
    • Peter - Still works for Stark; torn between going to MIT with Bastian or staying with Shane one year in the future. Five years in the future, depowered and working for the Resistance.
    • Rasheed - In hiding, working providing medical care to the Resistance with the remnants of Mendel Clinic workers. Independently, working on developing a treatment to counteract the suppression the Sentinels/camps administer.
    • Strange - Once a popular celebrity psychic, had a very public meltdown shortly before the explosion culminating in a now-famous interview where he begged the public: 'Should you find yourself in a place and time before all of this, find me -- and tell me: 'The days of future past are upon us'." Because of the prophetic nature of Strange's announcement, post-detonation, the clip is played and replayed. In addition, Stephen has vanished in the aftermath.
    • Tag - Co-founder of Chimaera Art Collective three-years-hence. Arts all the arts. Escaped to the Underground five years in the future; doing guerrilla arts to graffiti up the Sentinels. And interfere with their functioning.
  • Detainment
    • Lyric - In detainment camp five years in the future.
    • Egg - In detainment camp five years in the future.
  • Osborn Institute
    • Doug - Dockworker one year in the future.
    • Rasa
  • Dead
    • Anette - Is no longer on good terms with the Brotherhood and has gone solo with her terrorisms three years in the future. In five years, she had hidden out as long as she could before being captured by sentinels. She was broken out and is currently searching for her child, who had also been captured. Currently allied with Daken, who is also the father. Killed in the otherwise successful raid to rescue her child.

    • Jackson - Mutant education advocate three years in the future; practically respectable! Practically. Gets asked to speak at conferences and colleges and congressional hearings, even. Also, founded an art collective with Tag. Creates many silly arts. Killed in 2017 Westchester explosion five years in the future.
    • Sage - Killed in 2017 Westchester explosion five years in the future.
    • Shane - Co-proprietor of Evolve Coffeeshop one year in the future. Deceased five years in the future.

    • Mallory - Is pregnant one year in the future.
    • Matthieu - Alive! And rescued from Prometheus one year in the future in a raid that resulted in the deaths of Hive and Flicker; these deaths were averted in the present and Hive and Flicker are alive in the three-year future. Missing, five years in the future. Presumed dead or in a camp somewhere.
    • Morgan - Seeking revenge on Annette over a perceived betrayal.
Errata

We've now moved into part 3; characters are dreaming five years in the future.

Important notes to remember in the five-year future!

  • The Mark IV Sentinels are equipped with serum that can permanently depower mutants (the Mark III Sentinels' depowering darts will wear off after a few weeks' time.) It is up to each player whether or not your character still has their powers in the future.
  • Mark III Sentinels are everywhere; there are only a tiny handful of Mark IVs deployed, though.
  • ANYTHING in Westchester: Salem Center, ALL of Xavier's School, etc., these areas are UNPLAYABLE. Xavier's School no longer exists; outside of GM scenes do not RP there.
  • A good part of the Bronx was hit by the blast; it is theoretically RPable but is kind of a twisted wasteland.
  • The Mendel Clinic has been destroyed, outside of GM scenes do not RP there.
  • In fact, feel free to assume that any location whatsover that was openly mutant-friendly is no longer operational.
  • ALL MUTANTS in the five-year future have been required by law to turn themselves over for detainment. This means that your characters are, unfortunately, kind of limited in terms of their choices for Future Lives by five years in the future! Please DO NOT RP them going about their normal lives happily -- this would not be possible. By five years in the future there are a few possibilities for mutants:
    • Detainment camps: You can choose to be in the Osborn Institute (better conditions!) or one of the other (worse conditions!) camps (we'll assign one!) if your character would have complied with this law, OTHERWISE:
    • Passive resistance: Your character is in hiding. This doesn't mean that they have to actively be, you know, in a box, but it does mean that they are doing their best to live under the table in a HUGE way -- if they're IN New York City they are likely sticking to sewers, abandoned buildings, the very fringes of society; outside of New York City they're keeping their heads down and staying waaaay off the radar. No cushy jobs, no cushy lives, no paper trails.
    • Peaceful resistance: Your character is actively helping aid fugitives: they might not be fighting, but they're helping in some way with the resistance effort. Keeping people fed, finding people safehouses, helping monitor the movements of Sentinels -- whatever way they could be helpful, and there's probably a million, they're assisting with the scores of mutants who are on the run.
    • Violent resistance: Your character is fighting back. They may be doing any of the above two things but they're also probably joining in taking out the Sentinels where and when they can, teaming up with others to be on the offense rather than defense.
  • For HUMANS, the landscape is a bit different, since there's no law rounding them all up! But humans caught aiding mutant fugitives will be jailed just as well, so keep that in mind too; other than that, your character can be doing whatever. With the caveat that New York is more or less a war zone.
Timeline
Year One (Part I)
  • Late April/Early May 2014 - The Prometheus Gang (Jackson, Hive, Flicker, etc) successfully complete two more raids on Prometheus facilities.
  • June 3rd, 2014- Elliott Carruthers is elected to the office of New York City during a special election to replace the recently-deceased mayor.
  • Late June 2014 - The third (and final) Prometheus raid goes disastrously wrong when explosive brainchips take out all the labrats being rescued save one; 37 labrats die, with Matt as the only survivor (for reasons currently unknown, he did not have an explosive chip). Being Hive'd to them at the time, Hive immediately dies; Flicker suffers severe brain damage and dies a month later. Mirror recorded the event on-raid, the mass slaughter publicized -- leading to the closure of Prometheus and several arrests. A new prometheus project is launched, public and above-board, but Prometheus-classic is now officially dead.
  • 2015, early January - Someone (as of yet unknown) who works at the Mutant Registration Office leaks the names and addresses of the majority of mutants who are level 4 or higher. These mutants begin facing discrimination and harassment; the Friends of Humanity slowly begin putting out hits on them.
  • 2015, March 15th - A mutant teenager by the name of Hamsa is admitted to the Mendel clinic with a gunshot wound; his mutation manifests under duress, causing anyone he makes skin contact with to develop temporary 'scaliness'. The CDC briefly quarantines portions of Mendel Clinic to deal with the situation before determining the mutation is largely benevolent. However, the media uproar this event causes (with the Daily Bugle's headline proclaiming 'MUTANTS: CONTAGIOUS?'), particularly in the wake of the zombie plague, causes an immediate demand for means to mitigate the threat mutants pose to medical caretakers. Politicians and community leaders pledge to support new medical protocols for dealing with mutants; hospitals become even less likely to admit known mutants, and demands for medical professionals to have full and unfettered access to registration data are made. The Mendel Clinic will soon be a /lot/ busier.
Year Three (Part II)
  • 2015, June - After Prometheus' collapse, the Osborn Institute -- offering free health-care, education, and room-and-board to all mutants who willingly attend (in exchange for consensual study of their powers) -- begins a rapid rise as a friendlier, kinder replacement for Prometheus. The PR campaign behind the 'Land of Oz' is a monumental success, largely the work of Lucien Tessier. All mutants who attend the Osborn Institute are required to register.
  • 2015, November - The trial for the Oscorp 'Sentinel Medical Drone' ends in success, particularly after, during a rapidly escalating hostage situation, an EMT uses the drone to provide emergency care to both the hostages and the hostage-taker. Soon, the Sentinel drones become a staple of every ambulance in NYC.
  • 2016, February - A uniformed officer -- and member of the 'Freaksquad' (Elliott Carruthers' mutant-specialized police task-force) -- is killed on-duty in what is believed to be a hate-crime. The officer is a known and registered mutant. Either out of indifference or a lack of evidence, the killer is never found. The city is torn between two responses; grieving, and apathy.
  • 2016, April - Work at Oscorp begins on the Sentinel Mark II, a dual-purpose medical and non-lethal combat drone meant to potentially augment police officers.
  • 2016, June - After several high profile cold cases are solved by the 'Freaksquad', public opinion of the task-force begins to rise, with the murder of the previous member taking on a sort of folk-legend status.
  • 2016, July - In one of the cases solved by the 'Freaksquad', the defense lawyer brings up the usage of mutant powers to attain evidence. The case is thrown out, but the DA appeals.
  • 2016, September - Police officers are now equipped with temporary power-suppressing darts; this includes the 'Freaksquad'. At least one member of the 'Freaksquad' is 'darted' by an officer as a 'joke', leading to this officer's immediate dismissal from the force.
  • 2016, October - The Freaksquad court-case reaches the state supreme court, where the previous ruling is overturned. The defense attorney vows to take it to the federal Supreme Court.
  • 2016, November - Oscorp begins initial tests in secret on a prototype of the Mark II; Carruthers is invited as a guest to witness the machine.
  • 2017, February - 'Sentinel Mark II' drones are unveiled, to augment police officers in dangerous situations. The drones are equipped with power-suppressing darts. Public reaction is mixed. Osborn immediately assigns several to defend the Osborn Institute, which has received numerous bomb threats (and protests) and, despite its excellent PR, is continually accused (mostly by fringe mutants) of being another Prometheus trying to 'cure' mutations, just in a way prettier wrapper.
  • 2017, March - Sentinel Mark I drones start appearing in hospitals; they provide emergency medical care in situations where it would be dangerous for doctors to do so -- they are also capable of augmenting and aiding doctors and performing simple medical procedures in absolute privacy (allowing for the anonymity of patients).
  • 2017, April - A Sentinel Mark II drone is used to defuse a highly explosive situation in a NYC subway involving a telepath. No one is seriously injured; the act is hailed as an enormous success, and validation of the Sentinel program. Some members of the mutant community begin to prefer sentinels to cops; sentinels are less likely to beat you, and the Mark II drones record everything they see (which can be submitted as court evidence), forcing officers to behave more civilly around them.
  • 2017, May - Osborn is interviewed by Time, and is featured on their cover with a Sentinel Mark II drone. The article is overwhelmingly positive, laying out Osborn's desire to help solve both mutant problems and human problems, and also laying out his recent controversial decision to not design the sentinels for lethal combat, or use in war, despite the many lucrative military contracts offered to him to do so -- as he puts it, 'I feel it would be a betrayal of the spirit of the Sentinel program to use the very same machines that save so many lives to also take them'.
  • 2017, June - Work begins (in secret) on the Sentinel Mark III drone, a military-grade variant of the Mark II.

Year Five (Part III)

  • 2017, November - A malfunctioning Sentinel goes missing in Greenwich Village, later reported as stolen.
  • 2017, November - A Brotherhood attack on an NYPD Sentinel docking station later that month destroys nearly a fifth of the NYPD's current Sentinel fleet. Preliminary investigation points to the earlier stolen bot as a possible source of intel for the terrorist attack.
  • 2017, December - A massive explosion centered in Westchester, NY completely destroys the entire town of Salem Center and everything within a three mile radius. The thermal radiation from the blast spreads as far away as the upper edges of the Bronx. From the blast alone, the initial fatalities numbered over 175 thousand. The additional fatalities in the following weeks number closer to a million.
  • 2017, December - As the country struggles to recover from the explosion, Homeland Security announces that the detonation was a result of an attack on a Brotherhood training facility that ended with the Brotherhood detonating a nuclear bomb. The Brotherhood, generally glad to claim credit for Blowing Shit Up, strenuously denies any involvement in the detonation.
  • 2017, December - Casualties continue to grow up the East Coast as fallout spreads up through Connecticut.
  • 2017, December - Shortly before Christmas, martial law is declared in the greater New York area in response to rising crime rates in the aftermath of the bomb. The city and surrounding counties are put under a strict curfew.
  • 2018, January - A new fleet of Sentinels are deployed throughout the city to help enforce the stricter laws and curfews, equipped with both mutant detection technology and mutant suppression drugs.
  • 2018, March - A 'March-for-Peace' -- pushed by several mutant and non-mutant community leaders -- is staged in New York City. The march is promoted as an attempt to de-escalate the rising tensions in the wake of the Salem Center explosion. During the march, counter-protests -- decisively anti-mutant -- are thrown, leading to rioting. The police -- flanked by the new Sentinels -- are called in. Using the Sentinels' mutant-detecting technology, officers open fire almost exclusively on mutants. Over a hundred are killed, and several hundred more are reportedly injured.
  • 2018, April - Over two dozen NYPD officers involved in the March-for-Peace shootings commit suicide in the span of a single day. Though the person(s) responsible are never found -- and the Brotherhood never claims credit -- there are few doubts in anyone's mind that a telepath was involved.
  • 2018, April - In the wake of the NYPD suicides, the Department of Homeland Security -- along with the Bureau of Mutant Affairs -- begins an immediate policy of detaining any and all mutants classified as 'Beta' or higher. In addition, any and all mutants registered with psionic abilities are also to be detained, regardless of their classification.
  • 2018, May - In coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, Oscorp releases their new Mark III Sentinel drone -- an 'urban pacification' model. 'Urban pacification' is shorthand for 'military grade'. These Sentinels are larger, more powerful, and better equipped than their Mark II counterparts; armed with non-lethal and lethal devices, they are deployed along with federal officers to help detain the numerous registered mutants that are to be taken to an undisclosed location.
  • 2018, June - After seven years of operating under deep cover, Mystique -- a member of the Brotherhood -- discovers the location of Magneto. The Brotherhood immediately launches a successful assault on the prison, freeing the mutant, along with several other beta (and higher) mutants.
  • 2018, July - Investigation into the leaks that lead to Magneto's freedom reveal that Senator Kelly has, in fact, been absent for several years. This revelation causes a panic throughout the US Congress and the Senate. Mutant-sympathetic politicians are now accused of actually being mutants; Sentinels are stationed on the Congress and Senate floor to discover if more mutants are present. At least six Congressmen and one Senator are discovered to be mutants; two of the Congressmen resign on the spot. The rest will either not seek, or not secure, their re-election.
  • 2018, August - Legislation is pushed through Congress requiring mandatory mutant-testing to run for federal office (not banning mutants -- just requiring they be tested, and if they are mutants, they must be registered). Additionally, any and all immigrants and students coming to the US must be tested; if they are found to be mutants, they are automatically turned away.
  • 2018, September - Spear-headed by Magneto, the Brotherhood launches simultaneous assaults on Oscorp Tower's R&D department (destroying research data on the new Mark IV drone), a database center for mutant registration (destroying countless records), and a telepathic mutant detaining facility (freeing numerous telepaths). Perhaps surprisingly, these acts are committed with nearly no (non-mutant) casualties.
  • 2018, November - One of the telepaths freed by the Brotherhood uses his power to slip past security at the White House and, during a press conference -- on national television -- executes the President. He is later gunned down by the Secret Service, aided by a Sentinel Mark III. Despite adamantly denying involvement, the Brotherhood is blamed.
  • 2018, November - The Vice President's first act as President is to declare a state of country-wide martial law. Working with the Bureau for Mutant Affairs, Homeland Security, and Oscorp, he institutes a policy that all mutants in the US are to turn themselves over immediately for detainment until the threat of the Brotherhood can be stopped. Mark III Sentinels will be mass-produced on a previously untold scale, dispersed to all major cities, and put to work to enforce this policy. The Osborn Institute, no longer a school, will become one of many detainment camps for handling the mutant population.
  • 2018, December - Mass production of Mark III Sentinels begins. Attempts by the Brotherhood to disrupt this process meet minimal success. Thousands of mutants -- or families with mutants in them -- flee for Canada; nearly all are turned away -- or worse, turned over to US custom officials. Small, violent pro-mutant riots begin appearing across the east coast; the media portrays them as Brotherhood driven.
  • 2019, January - The first wave of Mark III Sentinels begins hitting city streets. What started as a series of small pro-mutant riots explodes; officials quickly discover there are numerous people who are mutants and never even realized it. Within the first week, death-tolls from rioting across the country grow to over a thousand. New York City is the hardest hit -- there, mutants go underground, hiding from the Sentinels and waging a campaign of non-violent resistance (largely by sabotaging the Sentinels).
  • 2019, February - Officials realize too late that they grossly underestimated the number of undetected, unregistered mutants. Hastily constructed detainment camps designed to handle a few thousand mutants find themselves dealing with tens of thousands. Only days after being opened, the detainment camps become a full-scale humanitarian crisis. Violence, hunger, and death are regular occurrences. Notably, while still a terrible place to be, the Osborn Institute remains one of the few camps where you are not likely to die or be shot.
  • 2019, March - Despite calls from multiple corners of the US (and the world), the President refuses to back down, continuing to deploy Sentinels to round up mutants. The Brotherhood begins a systematic assault on detainment camps across the country, freeing the mutants within -- and using them to swell their ranks. Meanwhile, the situation in New York City continues to degenerate, with the non-violent resistance becoming decisively violent.
  • 2019, April - In response to growing international pressure to get the humanitarian crisis under control, the President -- citing the 'success' of the Osborn Institute model -- gives Oscorp the contract of dealing with the the overpopulation of the camps. Oscorp immediately begins deploying Sentinel drones to build, expand, and maintain detainment camps. Rumors emerge of Oscorp spear-heading a Prometheus-like project within these camps.
  • 2019, May - As the situation in New York City becomes increasingly humiliating to the administration, the President deploys a fleet of Mark III Sentinels to the city -- along with the military -- telling those in charge to 'take back New York by any means necessary. 'Any means necessary' turns out to be open war.
  • 2019, May - The Mendel Clinic is destroyed in a standoff between the National Guard and some of the Clinic doctors who refuse to give up the patients inside. A good number of the Clinic's staff and many of their patients are killed; some of the rest of the staff go underground to help the resistance.
  • 2019, June - While detainment camps are still an awful place to live, Oscorp has significantly improved the chances that their occupants will not die -- while also providing mechanized guards to overlook them. An assault by the Brotherhood against one of these camps fails, leading to the death of several Brotherhood members.
  • 2019, July - Oscorp reveals their plans for the Sentinel Mark IV -- the plans for which were destroyed previously by an assault by Magneto. This Sentinel relies on a techno-organic structure that mimics the abilities of mutant metamorphs. Norman Osborn shoots down rumors that he used information gleaned from mutants at the Osborn Institute -- or the detainment camps -- to create this machine.
  • 2019, August - The first Mark IV is sent into service in New York City. In a span of three days, the mutant resistance -- previously fighting the Mark III Sentinels and military forces in the streets -- is driven underground.
  • 2019, September - Magneto arrives in New York City. In a public battle meant to rally mutants to the cause, he demolishes several dozen Mark IIIs and fights the Mark IV head on -- only to nearly be killed. Saved at the last minute by several Brotherhood members (at least two of whom give their lives), Magneto retreats to the New York City sewers.
  • 2019, October - In another broadcasted battle, the Mark IV brutally kills six mutants in New York City -- and in the process, demonstrates it has now somehow attained the powers of the two mutants previously slain by it when it fought Magneto. Concerns regarding how the technology works emerge among the public; pressure is put on Oscorp for full disclosure. Oscorp refuses.
  • 2019, December - As the world watches, the war in New York City continues.
